[EN] A large number of recreational and elite athletes use
nutritional supplements in hopes of improving performance.
These aids can be costly and potentially harmful,
and the advertised ergogenic gains are often based on little
or no scientific evidence. Due to the lack of regulation
of the dietary supplement industry, an abundance of supplement
products of dubious value, content, and quality
are now available around the world. Many supplement
products contain substances that are prohibited in sport
or that have been associated with significant morbidity
and mortality. For athletes, lack of knowledge or misinformation
has been established despite numerous sources
of information being available, and the reasons for, and
implications of, unsupervised and unrestricted supplement
use require further attention. In addition to the
necessity of an appropriate regulation of dietary supplements,
nutritional education and scientifically sound guidance
for athletes is required. Intervention and prevention
efforts should be particularly targeted to adolescents.[ES] Una gran cantidad de deportistas, tanto recreacionales
[EN] Introduction: The female athlete triad (FAT) is a
serious health-related problem that threatens women
who exercise. This condition is an interrelated multifactorial
syndrome which includes low energy availability,
menstrual cycle disturbances and decreased bone
mineral density.
Objective: To review the major components of the FAT
and their relationships, as well as strategies for diagnosis
and treatment.
Methods: Articles related to the topic were reviewed
through PubMed and SportDiscus databases.
Results: Interrelationship between components of the
FAT may result in clinical manifestations, including
eating disorders, amenorrhea and osteoporosis. Clinical
conditions are not always exhibited simultaneously.
Prevention is important to minimize complications. Diagnosis
and treatment is complicated and often must
involve an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach.
Conclusions: Understanding of the disease may be
facilitated by a unified framework focusing on energy
deficiency. Preventive or early interventions require to
increase energy availability through a higher total energy
intake or a decrease in energy expenditure trough excessive
physical exercise. A healthy lifestyle, and support by
parents and coaches should be included. Psychotherapy
may be necessary when eating disorders are present.[ES] Introducción: La tríada de la atleta femenina es un
A new integrative model of overtraining based on Burnout and stress-recovery psychological approaches
[EN] The basic concepts and psychological
issues related to overtraining syndrome are reviewed
in the first part of the present article. The
most important models that, from different
approaches, try to explain this situation are then
presented. In the second section, models related to
the burnout hypothesis, such as Smith’s cognitiveaffective
model (1986), Schmidt and Stein’s sport
commitment model (1991), Coakley’s social model
(1992), Kelley’s stress and burnout model (1994)
and Garcés and Vives’s integrated model (2003)
are exposed. The hypothesis of the stress-recovery
state is subsequently developed, explaining the
most significant implications of both stress and recovery
in sport. The characteristics of two of the
most important models based on this hypothesis:
Kellmann’s scissor model of stress-recovery state
(1991) and Kenttä and Hassmén’s stress-recovery
state model (1998) are described. Finally, in order
to get a better understanding of the short and longterm
manifestations of overtraining, a new model
based on both the burnout and stress-recovery approaches
(Self-determination and exercise adherence: state-of-the-art).
Abstract
Self-determination Theory (SDT), conceptualized by Deci and Ryan, provides a framework to understand how individuals can be encouraged to make decisions that will have a positive effect on their long-term health. SDT postulates that intentional human behavior can be described through two processes of intrinsic motivation and intemalization. Motivation is a key element for exercise adherence. The detailed study of the SDT in the context of physical activity and its relationship to the adherence to physical exercise programs should be a future research area for those working in the field of physical activity and sport sciences. Implementation of this research line, knowledge of specific characteristics of those individuals participating in organized physical activities, and planning adaptation, may help to reach adherence levels allowing a higher number of individuals to develop a healthy lifestyle.</p
Attributions for success and failure in Spanish team sport players
[EN] This study examined the role of ability, effort, luck and difficulty of the task in attributions for successful and
unsuccessful performances made by Spanish team sport players, and determined if differences exist between athletes at
different competition levels. Participants were 143 young men (soccer: N = 64; indoor soccer: N = 37; basketball: N =
42), ages 17 to 25 years (M = 20, SD = 5). Winners perceived ability and effort as the reasons behind their success while
losers made attributions mainly to luck and the difficulty of the task. Ability and effort were in the three sports the
reasons given for successful outcomes at various competition levels. Difficulty of the task was the factor rated higher by
those who lost competing at a national level, while luck and effort were rated higher for those who lost competing at a
N = 42), con edades comprendidas entre 17 y 25 años (M = 20, SD = 5). Los ganadores consideraban la habilidad y el
[EN] This article reviews the most important topics related with overtraining in high performance sport, from the sport psychology point of view. Definitions and approaches in the literature, basic elements, categories related to the training process and selected indicators of overtraining, specific and non-specific factors participating in its expression, main survey lines and adequate recommendations for prevention are exposed in the different sections.S
Biological and psychological monitoring of training status during an entire season in top kayakers
[EN] Aim. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in selected biological and psychological variables in a group of top level kayakers along a 42-week training season. Methods. Eight top junior sprint kayakers (age=16.8±2.1) (5 men and 3 women) with international competitive experience participated in the research. During the 42-wk season the subjects were tested in three occasions: (T1) in the second week of the general training period, (T2) at the beginning of the specific training period, (T3) at the beginning of the competitive training period. Firstly, subjects were asked to complete the Recovery-Stress Questionnaire for Athletes (RESTQ-Sport) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaires, and Borg's rate of perceived exertion scale (RPE). Immediately after, blood samples were collected and white blood cells, creatine kinase (CK), C-reactive protein (CRP), myeloperoxidase protein levels (MPO) and glutathione status were determined. ANOVA with repeated measures was used to determine the differences between tests. Results. From the hematological and biochemical measures only total leukocytes changed significantly, increasing at T3 when compared to T1. There were no differences along the entire season in both RESTQ-Sport and POMS scores or indices. Concerning performance, the group improved their maximal strength (+17.4% in bench-press IRM) and their specific-distance time (+9.8%). The main finding of the present study was that training was well-balanced between stress and recovery because while specific performance increased, signs of overtraining were not found. Conclusion. Training monitoring in athletes should be per-formed in a multilevel approach using measurements of performance as well as biological or psychological parameters.S
Resistant personality and levels of physical activity in professional and amateur climbers
[EN] Climbing is a mountain sport that requires a complete physical preparation. Specifically, climbing is characterized as a short-duration and explosive sport. Also requires great strength and strength-endurance. Physical training is important, but we must not forget psychological training. The athlete will face numerous stressful stimuli to which he must face, in the achievement of his objective, due in most part, to the risk that his practice entails. This research analyses the possible influence of the amount of physical activity performed by climbers, as well as the intensity of it, on the levels of resistant personality.S
Identification of integrity issues in sports
[EN] Psytool is a European project, conceived to support youth development through the practice of sport in positive and safe environments, which has looked to create innovative approaches in promoting integrity in sport. To this end, an e-learning platform was created to train agents of change who act as transmitters and instigators of this framework of well-being in accordance with their respective responsibilities and who know how to recognize unsporting situations, react against them and promote positive experiences in sports. The objective of this research was to assess the degree of satisfaction of the agents of change (N=18) trained by the University of León on the content of the different lessons of the Psytool educational platform. Once selected, agents of change started a training course over three months. The Satisfaction Questionnaire, which was distributed once the lessons were over, was composed by 10 items related with the content and application in real situations of the different topics, and the responses were registered on a Likert scale from 1 to 5. Results show that the level of satisfaction (M= 4.08; SD= 0.66) was high and particularly so in the perceived value of the contents of lessons related to gender, aggression or racism and discrimination. Participants valued training in a positive way and felt prepared to better deal with situations they face day to day helping to bring about behavioural changes across all stakeholders in the field of sport.SIProject PsyTool “Sport Psychology as a Strategic Tool for Prevention and training on Grassroots Sports” Erasmus+ Sport Programme
Reasons for dropout in youth soccer: a comparison with other team sports
[EN] The purpose of our study was to identify the main reasons for dropout in young soccer players and to
compare withdrawal motives to those rated important by participants in other team sports. Dropouts (150
males and 159 females, ranging in age from 14 to 18 years) were administered the Questionnaire of Reasons
for Attrition by Gould, Feltz, Horn and Weiss (1982). Represented were youth who participated in
the sport of soccer (n=127), basketball (n=122), and volleyball (n=60). The most important reasons for
attrition from the different team sports were having other things to do, dislike of the coach, and lack of
team spirit. Reasons related to the team work were also given high ratings. Less important reasons concerned
old age, rewards and competition. Although discriminant analysis revealed some differences between
sports, the finding remains that both conflict of interests and aspects of the sports environment are
major motives for withdrawal from team sports.
