    In vivo and in vitro degradation of glycine/DL-lactic acid copolymers

    A series of copolymers of glycine and DL-lactic acid with various compositions was synthesized and their in vivo and in vitro degradation behavior was studied. For the in vivo examination, discs of the copolymer films were subcutaneously implanted in rats. The in vitro studies were carried out in phosphate buffer at pH = 7.4 and 37°C. The decrease in molecular weight, the loss of weight, and the tissue reactions of the different copolymers were determined after 2, 5, and 10 weeks. Poly(DL-lactic acid) was used as reference material. The in vivo and in vitro degradation behavior of the polymers was comparable. The decrease of molecular weight of the copolymers and poly(DL-lactic acid) in time was similar. The weight loss for copolymers with a higher mole fraction of glycine units started earlier. The copolymer with the highest content of glycine units disappeared completely within 10 weeks both in vivo and in vitro. The poly(DL-lactic acid) implant lost only 25% weight over the same period. Tissue reactions against all materials started with an acute inflammatory reaction caused by the trauma of implantation, followed by wound-healing processes, ending in a very mild foreign body reaction for the poly(DL-lactic acid) and a more excessive macrophage mediated foreign body reaction for the glycine/DL-lactic acid copolymers.     Dose-effect relations in time-limited combined psycho-pharmacological treatment for depression

    BACKGROUND: A limited number of psychotherapy sessions in combination with medication is preferable to pharmacotherapy only in the treatment of ambulatory patients with major depression. Whether there is a relation between the number of sessions and the efficacy of the treatment is uncertain. METHOD: Randomized clinical trial comparing two treatment conditions in outpatients with major depression. All patients studied had a baseline score of at least 14 points on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. The two conditions consist of 8-session or 16-session Short Psychodynamic Supportive Psychotherapy, both in combination with pharmacotherapy. Efficacy was assessed using the 17-item HDRS, the CGI of Severity and of Improvement, the depression subscale of the SCL-90 and the Quality of Life Depression Scale. RESULTS: The rate of change would seem to indicate that eight sessions are preferable for both moderately and severely depressed patients, although the results converged again at the end. Furthermore, in terms of satisfaction with the number of sessions and drop-out percentages during treatment, no differences were found between the conditions. CONCLUSION: In the light of the outcome analysis (faster remission after fewer sessions), a short version of the psychotherapy treatment in a combined course of treatment seems to be justifie

    Biodegradation of porous versus non-porous poly(L-lactic acid) films

    The influence of porosity on the degradation rate of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) films was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Non-porous, porous and “combi” (porous with a non-porous layer) PLLA films were used. Changes in Mw, Mn, polydispersity (Mw/Mn) ratio, melting temperature (Tm), heat of fusion, tensile strength, E-modulus, mass and the remaining surface area of cross-sections of the PLLA films were measured. In general, during the degradation process, the porous film has the highest Mw, Mn, Mw/Mn ratio and Tm, while the non-porous film has the lowest. In contrast, the highest heat of fusion values were observed for the non-porous film, indicating the presence of relatively smaller molecules forming crystalline domains more easily. The tensile strength and E-modulus of the non-porous film decrease faster than those of the porous and the combi film. None of the three types of films showed massive mass loss in vitro nor a significant decrease in remaining polymer surface area in light microscopical sections in vitro and in vivo. Heavy surface erosion of the non-porous layer of the combi film was observed after 180 days, turning the combi film into a porous film. This is also indicated by the changes in tensile strength, Mw, Mw/Mn, Tm and heat of fusion as a function of time. It is concluded that non-porous PLLA degrades faster than porous PLLA. Thus, in our model, porosity is an important determinant of the degradation rate of PLLA films

    Algorithm for tracking peaks amongst numerous datasets in comprehensive two-dimensional chromatography to enhance data analysis and interpretation

    Analytical data processing often requires the comparison of data, i.e. finding similarities and differences within separations. In this context, a peak-tracking algorithm was developed to compare multiple datasets in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) chromatography. Two application strategies were investigated: i) data processing where all chromatograms are produced in one sequence and processed simultaneously, and ii) method optimization where chromatograms are produced and processed cumulatively. The first strategy was tested on data from comprehensive 2D liquid chromatography and comprehensive 2D gas chromatography separations of academic and industrial samples of varying compound classes (monoclonal-antibody digest, wine volatiles, polymer granulate headspace, and mayonnaise). Peaks were tracked in up to 29 chromatograms at once, but this could be upscaled when necessary. However, the peak-tracking algorithm performed less accurate for trace analytes, since, peaks that are difficult to detect are also difficult to track. The second strategy was tested with 1D liquid chromatography separations, that were optimized using automated method-development. The strategy for method optimization was quicker to detect peaks that were still poorly separated in earlier chromatograms compared to assigning a target chromatogram, to which all other chromatograms are compared.     Accurate evaluation of the interstitial KKR-Green function

    It is shown that the Brillouin zone integral for the interstitial KKR-Green function can be evaluated accurately by taking proper care of the free-electron singularities in the integrand. The proposed method combines two recently developed methods, a supermatrix method and a subtraction method. This combination appears to provide a major improvement compared with an earlier proposal based on the subtraction method only. By this the barrier preventing the study of important interstitial-like defects, such as an electromigrating atom halfway along its jump path, can be considered as being razed.Comment: 23 pages, RevTe

    Fashion retailing – past, present and future

    This issue of Textile Progress reviews the way that fashion retailing has developed as a result of the application of the World Wide Web and information and communications technology (ICT) by fashion-retail companies. The review therefore first considers how fashion retailing has evolved, analysing retail formats, global strategies, emerging and developing economies, and the factors that are threatening and driving growth in the fashion-retail market. The second part of the review considers the emergence of omni-channel retailing, analysing how retail has progressed and developed since the adoption of the Internet and how ICT initiatives such as mobile commerce (m-commerce), digital visualisation online, and in-store and self-service technologies have been proven to support the progression and expansion of fashion retailing. The paper concludes with recommendations on future research opportunities for gaining a better understanding of the impacts of ICT and omni-channel retailing, through which it may be possible to increase and develop knowledge and understanding of the way the sector is developing and provide fresh impetus to an already-innovative and competitive industr

    Colorectal liver metastases: Surgery versus thermal ablation (COLLISION) - a phase III single-blind prospective randomized controlled trial

    Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) are widely accepted techniques to eliminate small unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). Although previous studies labelled thermal ablation inferior to surgical resection, the apparent selection bias when comparing patients with unresectable disease to surgical candidates, the superior safety profile, and the competitive overall survival results for the more recent reports mandate the setup of a randomized controlled trial. The objective of the COLLISION trial is to prove non-inferiority of thermal ablation compared to hepatic resection in patients with at least one resectable and ablatable CRLM and no extrahepatic disease. Methods: In this two-arm, single-blind multi-center phase-III clinical trial, six hundred and eighteen patients with at least one CRLM (≤3cm) will be included to undergo either surgical resection or thermal ablation of appointed target lesion(s) (≤3cm). Primary endpoint is OS (overall survival, intention-to-treat analysis). Main secondary endpoints are overall disease-free survival (DFS), time to progression (TTP), time to local progression (TTLP), primary and assisted technique efficacy (PTE, ATE), procedural morbidity and mortality, length of hospital stay, assessment of pain and quality of life (QoL), cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and quality-adjusted life years (QALY). Discussion: If thermal ablation proves to be non-inferior in treating lesions ≤3cm, a switch in treatment-method may lead to a reduction of the post-procedural morbidity and mortality, length of hospital stay and incremental costs without compromising oncological outcome for patients with CRLM.
