    Two-Component Fokker-Planck Models for the Evolution of Isolated Globular Clusters

    Two-component (normal and degenerate stars) models are the simplest realization of clusters with a mass spectrum because high mass stars evolve quickly into degenerates, while low mass stars remain on the main-sequence for the age of the universe. Here we examine the evolution of isolated globular clusters using two-component Fokker-Planck (FP) models that include heating by binaries formed in tidal capture and in three-body encounters. Three-body binary heating dominates and the postcollapse expansion is self-similar, at least in models with total mass M <= 3 x 10^5 M_\odot, initial half-mass radius r_{h,i} >= 5 pc, component mass ratio m_2/m_1 <= 2, and number ratio N_1/N_2 <= 300 when m_2=1.4 M_\odot. We derive scaling laws for \rho_c, v_c, r_c, and r_h as functions of m_1/m_2, N, M, and time t from simple energy-balance arguments, and these agree well with the FP simulations. We have studied the conditions under which gravothermal oscillations (GTOs) occur. If E_{tot} and E_c are the energies of the cluster and of the core, respectively, and t_{rh} and t_c are their relaxation times, then \epsilon \equiv (E_{tot}/t_{rh})/(E_c/t_{rc}) is a good predictor of GTOs: all models with \epsilon>0.01 are stable, and all but one with \epsilon < 0.01 oscillate. We derive a scaling law for \epsilon against N and m_1/m_2 and compared with our numerical results. Clusters with larger m_2/m_1 or smaller N are stabler.Comment: 15 pages (LaTeX) with 8 figures.     Preliminary Observations on the Effects In Vivo and In Vitro of Low Dose Laser on the Epithelia of the Bladder, Trachea and Tongue of the Mouse

    The effects of low dose CW laser were studied by in vivo and in vitro systems. The experimental tissues that were used included bladders, tracheas and tongues as experimental tissues. Buddings (round surface projections) from the transitional epithelium of bladder were frequently observed 3 days after laser treatment in both in vivo and in vitro systems. The trachea and tongue were less affected. In both the in vivo and in vitro systems, some epithelial cells of the trachea showed decreased microvilli and cilia 3 days after treatment whereas the epithelial cells of the tongue revealed no response to laser treatment in both systems. Low dose laser, however, appeared to promote the rate of healing of experimental tongue ulcer: healing was about 1 day earlier in the laser treated than non-treated animals and vessel infiltration and epithelialization were detected earlier in the treated

    Stimulation of Collagen Formation in the Intestinal Anastomosis by Low Dose He-Ne Laser

    The effect of low dose He-Ne laser on the healing of intestinal anastomosis was studied in the albino rat. A small piece of jejunum was removed from each rat and the ends sutured back with a simple interrupted pattern. In the experimental animal, the anastomosis was Irradiated through an optic fiber with a He-Ne laser (1 mW) for 15 minutes whereas in the control animal, the anastomosis was not irradiated. The differences between the two groups were compared by histology, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and autoradiography 3 and 7 days after operation. The laser treated experimental animals demonstrated thicker collagen fibers and an increased quantity of collagen at the junction of the anastomosis compared to control animals. Increased uptake of labelled proline was also evident in the laser treated animals. These observations all point to a possible enhancement of collagen synthesis triggered by laser irradiation

    The Microvasculature of Human Oral Mucosa Using Vascular Corrosion Casts and India Ink Injection I. Tongue Papillae

    The microvasculature of human tongue papillae originating from 9 males and 6 females, aged 0.5 to 2 years was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular corrosion casts and by light microscopy (LM) of India ink injected specimens. All papillae showed a microvasculature characterized by primary, secondary and tertiary capillary loops. In the filiform papillae the loops were generally arranged in a corolla-like pattern with the tertiary loops demonstrating a hair-pin shape. The fungiform papillae showed basically a similar architectural pattern although the loops were somewhat more compact and complex in structure. A small, shallow depression of the tertiary loops at the top of these papillae was found to be occupied by a prominent rete ridge of the surface epithelium. There was a gradual transition from filiform to foliate papillae, the latter appearing as rows of coalesced filiform papillae. The circumvallate papillae easily identified by the surrounding furrow showed a rather complex and compact pattern of capillary loops of which typical hair-pin shaped tertiary loops dominated the periphery of the papilla. Small grooves or depressions in the vascular network were found to be occupied by rete ridges of the overlying mucosal epithelium

    We describe the epidemiology of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H7N9) based on poultry market environmental surveillance and laboratory-confirmed human cases (n = 9) in Guangdong, China. We also compare the epidemiology between human cases of high- and low-pathogenic avian influenza A(H7N9) (n = 51) in Guangdong. Case fatality and severity were similar. Touching sick or dead poultry was the most important risk factor for HPAI A(H7N9) infections and should be highlighted for the control of future influenza A(H7N9) epidemics.published_or_final_versio

    Association of BANK1 and TNFSF4 with systemic lupus erythematosus in Hong Kong Chinese

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prototypic autoimmune disease with complex genetic inheritance. Recently, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in BANK1 and TNFSF4 have been shown to be associated with SLE in Caucasian populations, but it is not known whether they are also involved in the disease in other ethnic groups. Recent data from our genome-wide association study (GWAS) for 314 SLE cases and 920 controls collected in Hong Kong identified SNPs in and around BANK1 and TNFSF4 to be associated with SLE risk. On the basis of the results of the reported studies and our GWAS, SNPs were selected for further genotyping in 949 SLE patients (overlapping with the 314 cases in our GWAS) and non-overlapping 1042 healthy controls. We confirmed the associations of BANK1 and TNFSF4 with SLE in Chinese (BANK1, rs3733197, odds ratio (OR)=0.84, P=0.021; BANK1, rs17266594, OR=0.61, P=4.67 × 10−9; TNFSF4, rs844648, OR=1.22, P=2.47 × 10−3; TNFSF4, rs2205960, OR=1.30, P=2.41 × 10−4). Another SNP located in intron 1 of BANK1, rs4522865, was separately replicated by Sequenom in 360 cases and 360 controls and was also confirmed to be associated with SLE (OR=0.725, P=2.93 × 10−3). Logistic regression analysis showed that rs3733197 (A383T in ankyrin domain) and rs17266594 (a branch point-site SNP) from BANK1 had independent contributions towards the disease association (P=0.037 and 6.63 × 10−8, respectively). In TNFSF4, rs2205960 was associated with SLE independently from the effect of rs844648 (P=6.26 × 10−3), but not vice versa (P=0.55). These findings suggest that multiple independent genetic variants may be present within the gene locus, which exert their effects on SLE pathogenesis through different mechanisms

    Technical Note: A comparison of central and peripheral intraocular pressure using rebound tonometry

    Purpose: To compare central and peripheral intraocular pressure (IOP) readings obtained with rebound tonometry.Methods: Intraocular pressure was measured on the right eye of 153 patients (65 males, 88 females), aged from 21 to 85 years (mean +/- S.D., 55.5 +/- 15.2 years) with the ICare rebound tonometer at centre, and 2 mm from the limbus (in the nasal and temporal regions along the 0-180O corneal meridian).Results: Intraocular pressure values obtained with the ICare were 14.9 +/- 2.8; 14.1 +/- 2.5 and 14.5 +/- 2.7 mmHg at centre, nasal and temporal corneal locations, respectively. On average, nasal and temporal IOP readings were 0.75 and 0.37 mmHg lower than the central reading (p 0.05, respectively). A highly significant correlation was found between central and peripheral measurements in nasal (r(2) = 0.905; p < 0.001) and temporal (r(2) = 0.879; p < 0.001) regions along the horizontal meridian. Almost 80% of patients presented nasal IOP values within +/- 1 mmHg of the central value.Conclusions: Intraocular pressure values measured with the ICare (R) rebound tonometer on the nasal corneal region is slightly lower on average and highly correlated with IOP values recorded at corneal centre. Both nasal and temporal readings are in good agreement with central IOP, and could be used to obtain a reliable estimate of rebound IOP in corneas where central readings cannot be taken.- (undefined

    An Optical Source Catalog of the North Ecliptic Pole Region

    We present a five (u*,g',r',i',z') band optical photometry catalog of the sources in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) region based on deep observations made with MegaCam at CFHT. The source catalog covers about 2 square degree area centered at the NEP and reaches depths of about 26 mag for u*, g', r' bands, about 25 mag for i' band, and about 24 mag for z' band (4 sigma detection over an 1 arcsec aperture). The total number of cataloged sources brighter than r'= 23 mag is about 56,000 including both point sources and extended sources. From the investigation of photometric properties using the color-magnitude diagrams and color-color diagrams, we have found that the colors of extended sources are mostly (u*-r') 0.5. This can be used to separate the extended sources from the point sources reliably, even for the faint source domain where typical morphological classification schemes hardly work efficiently. We have derived an empirical color-redshift relation of the red sequence galaxies using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. By applying this relation to our photometry catalog and searching for any spatial overdensities, we have found two galaxy clusters and one nearby galaxy group.Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables.     PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive uropathy can cause irreversible kidney injury, atrophy, and inflammation, which can ultimately lead to fibrosis. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key trigger of fibrosis and is caused by upregulation of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) and angiotensin II (ANGII). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously produced gasotransmitter with cytoprotective properties. The present study aims to elucidate the effects of the slow-releasing H2S donor GYY4137 on chronic ureteral obstruction and evaluate potential mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), male Lewis rats were given daily intraperitoneal (IP) administration of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) vehicle (UUO group) or PBS+200μmol/kg GYY4137 (UUO+GYY4137 group) for 30 days. Urine and serum samples were collected to determine physiological parameters of renal function and injury. Kidneys were removed on post-operative day 30 for evaluation of histopathology and protein expression. EMT in pig kidney epithelial cells (LLC-PK1) was induced with TGF-β1 and treated with GYY4137 to evaluate potential mechanisms via in vitro scratch wound assays. RESULTS: H2S treatment decreased serum creatinine and urine protein/creatinine excretion ratio following UUO. In addition, H2S mitigated cortical loss, inflammatory damage, and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Tissues exhibited decreased expression of EMT markers upon H2S treatment. EMT progression in LLC-PK1 was alleviated upon in vitro administration of GYY4137. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate, for the first time, the protective effects of H2S in chronic obstructive uropathy and may represent a potential therapeutic solution to ameliorate renal damage and improve clinical outcomes of urinary obstruction.This work was supported by a grant from the Lawson Health Research Foundation
