Introduction : Pulmonary complications have a significant impact on morbidity and mortality after major abdominal surgery. One of the major causes of pulmonary dysfunction after such surgery is restricted breathing due to pain and diaphragmatic dysfunction.Methodology :  this study investigated the effects of pre operative breathing exercises training on the vital capacity and peak expiratory flow rate of upper abdominal surgery patients. The patient were divided into 2 groups, control and experimental. Patient in experimental group were given three supervised session of diaphragmatic deep breathing exercise daily. Spirometric and peak flow meter values of vital capacity and peak expiratory flow rate were obtained one day before and 1st , 3rd , 5th, and 7th day after surgery.Result and conclusion : The data obtained were analyzed in terms of descriptive(frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics by using soft ware SPSS – 16.1 version. The analysis showed a significant difference in the pre and post training vital capacity and peak expiratory flow rate for experimental group compared to control group. So, diaphragmatic deep breathing exercise improves the pulmonary functions after the abdominal surgery.Â

Simulations of Aerodynamic Damping for MEMS Resonators

Aerodynamic damping for MEMS resonators is studied based on the numerical solution of Boltzmann-ESBGK equation. A compact model is then developed based on numerical simulations for a wide range of Knudsen numbers. The damping predictions are compared with both Reynold equation based models and several sets of experimental data. It has been found that the structural damping is dominant at low pressures (high Knudsen numbers). For cases with small length-to-width ratios and large vibration amplitudes, the threedimensionality effects must be taken into account. Finally, an uncertainty quantification approach based on the probability transformation method has been applied to assess the influence of pressure and geometric uncertainties. The output probability density functions (PDF) of the damping ratio has been studied for various input PDF of beam geometry and ambient pressure

Effects of spoilage on nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes signatures of the clam Ruditapes decussatus

Fish and seafood products are highly susceptible to post-mortem spoilage due to autolytic reactions at start, then microbiological activity and eventually oxidative reactions. Chemical and microbiological parameters are usually used to assess quality and make decisions for protecting public health, but they lack precision in defining which spoilage pathway is occurring at each moment. The objective of this work was to assess the effects of spoilage reactions on nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes in the grooved carpet shell clam, Ruditapes decussatus, and compare them to biochemical indicators of seafood deterioration, in order to better understand the relations between the different spoilage pathways during commercial storage conditions. Clams were kept in a refrigerator at 5 ºC, to simulate normal commercial storage conditions, and sampled in the beginning of the experiment, and after eight, ten and twelve days. Moisture, condition index, percentage edibility, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), pH, nitrogen and carbon percentages and stable isotopes were determined for each sampling moment. Stable isotope analyses were performed using a Costech Elemental Analyzer (ECS 4010) coupled to a ThermoFinnigan Delta V Advantage. Stable isotopes analysis, especially for nitrogen, proved to be a good tool for the study of clam deterioration. Nitrogen stable isotopes results showed a relation with other spoilage indicators, such as pH and TVB-N, and allowed identifying spoilage specific pathways, such as amino acids decarboxylation and production of volatile nitrogen compounds.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An Early-warning System for Electromagnetic Follow-up of Gravitational-wave Events

Binary neutron stars (BNSs) will spend ≃10–15 minutes in the band of Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo detectors at design sensitivity. Matched-filtering of gravitational-wave (GW) data could in principle accumulate enough signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) to identify a forthcoming event tens of seconds before the companions collide and merge. Here we report on the design and testing of an early-warning GW detection pipeline. Early-warning alerts can be produced for sources that are at low enough redshift so that a large enough S/N accumulates ~10–60 s before merger. We find that about 7% (49%) of the total detectable BNS mergers will be detected 60 s (10 s) before the merger. About 2% of the total detectable BNS mergers will be detected before merger and localized to within 100 deg² (90% credible interval). Coordinated observing by several wide-field telescopes could capture the event seconds before or after the merger. LIGO–Virgo detectors at design sensitivity could facilitate observing at least one event at the onset of merger

Binary neutron stars (BNSs) will spend ≃10\simeq 10 -- 15 minutes in the band of Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors at design sensitivity. Matched-filtering of gravitational-wave (GW) data could in principle accumulate enough signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to identify a forthcoming event tens of seconds before the companions collide and merge. Here we report on the design and testing of an early warning gravitational-wave detection pipeline. Early warning alerts can be produced for sources that are at low enough redshift so that a large enough SNR accumulates ∼10−60 s\sim 10 - 60\,\rm s before merger. We find that about 7% (respectively, 49%) of the total detectable BNS mergers will be detected 60 s60\, \rm s (10 s10\, \rm s) before the merger. About 2% of the total detectable BNS mergers will be detected before merger and localized to within 100 deg2100\, \rm \text{deg}^2 (90% credible interval). Coordinated observing by several wide-field telescopes could capture the event seconds before or after the merger. LIGO-Virgo detectors at design sensitivity could facilitate observing at least one event at the onset of merger.Comment: small update in numbers caused by using a more updated local BNS rate estimat
