In Bangladesh, children are accustomed to working in industrial and manufacturing plants, small scale factories, metal works, construction, as well as in many informal sector activities. Based on a survey conducted in Sylhet city, this study found that child workers are suffering from different physical and psychological problems and that more than half of them receive their medical assistance from local health care providers who have no recognized qualifications. The study maintains that working from an early age impedes the children’s physical growth and intellectual and psychological development, which then also has negative effects on their long-term health and earning potential.risky child labor, physical health, mental health, Bangladesh

Inflation Targeting as the Monetary Policy Framework: Bangladesh Perspective

    Get PDF
Inflation targeting strategy has become a widely accepted monetary policy framework in many countries all over the world. Our study finds that the central bank of Bangladesh is neither inflation targeting nor does follow any other rule-guided monetary policy, rather the policy is formulated with substantial discretion under the guidelines of donor agencies. This paper provides the evidence that monetary sector of Bangladesh economy has gained considerable degree of maturity and fulfils a number of prerequisites to adopt inflation targeting strategy. Using data over 1980-2010 we estimate an error correction model in order to examine if interest rate policy could fight the inflation. This is evident that deviation in inflation from target can be corrected via the changes in interest rate. Empirical findings jointly with few descriptive statistics provide strong evidence to recommend inflation targeting as the monetary policy strategy for Bangladesh.Bangladesh, Inflation Targeting, Monetary Policy.

As society goes ahead in Bangladesh, there is an increasing expectation that women can  not only play their roles by nurturing and raising families to ensure confident and competent future generations for the betterment of society but can also  generate income by joining as paid workforce in the working place. Growing cost of living and change of mindset are the key reasons for which increasing number of educated women are now working outside their house. Even in recent time, the tendency is enhancing gradually. As a result, the traditional family is being replaced by the dual career family. Thus, socio-demographic changes are occurring similar to those in developing and developed societies. This dual responsibility is putting mounting pressure on women to achieve and maintain work life balance. In this article, a survey is conducted on 62 education institutions of Bangladesh taking sample of 320 teachers to know the real status of work-life balance institutions. The study finds that the work-life balance situation is moderate which can be improved by ensuring flexible working hours (roistered days off and family friendly starting and finishing times), transport facility, residential facility, child care center, flexible work arrangements/ job sharing , reduced working hours & workload and child schooling for the female teachers. Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon Sequestering Calcium Carbonate Cement

The cement industry is the second-largest manufacturing emitter of CO2, and the manufacture and placement of concrete accounts for 7-8% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. There is increasing pressure on the cement industry to develop a sustainable cement to support rapid global urban development without the associated emissions of cement production. The calcination reaction required to manufacture Portland cement is the prime source of emissions, so eliminating the release of CO2 liberated during calcination of limestone provides an excellent opportunity to produce a more sustainable cement. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) cement is a novel alternative, which can eliminate the calcination process or close the loop on CO2 emissions during cement production. In this study, a vateritic CaCO3 is synthesized from the double decomposition reaction of equimolar CaCl2.2H2O and Na2CO3 at room temperature using a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR). The morphology of precipitated vaterite displays nano-aggregated micron-sized spherical particles. The dissolution of vaterite and recrystallization to a stable polymorph (calcite and/or aragonite) provides the necessary cementing reaction. Mg2+ and/or Sr2+ ions control the transformation kinetics and the abundance of the stable phase. However, the low concentration of Mg2+ (0.05 M) was insufficient to inhibit calcite formation and promote aragonite formation. Aragonite containing hardened cement exhibits 10 times higher compressive strength than a calcite containing one. The hardened cement exhibits a pH neutral microporous structure with relatively low compressive strength; the highest compressive strength was measured at approximately 1.11 MPa. By capitalizing on the unique properties of CaCO3 cement, it can be developed as an ideal cement to support environmental restoration projects, such as oyster reef restoration along the Intracoastal Waterway in Florida, where the neutral pH of CaCO3 cement and its chemical composition provide it with enhanced properties for oyster recruitment compared to Portland cement

Environmental protection and sustainability is the part of Islamic finance to ensure the fulfilment and establishments of spirit of Islamic tenants. The need to care for the environment and the forms of life that Allah has created on this earth that includes proper usage of natural resources (Al-Fajr: 11-14). Green finance involves the allocation of funds to the environmental friendly projects that help the mankind from any harmful and compliance to the ‘Shari’ah’ rules. The main purpose of the study is to examine the role of ‘Shar’ah’ based banking on green financing in Bangladesh. The study has used the structural questionnaire for primary data that includes various dimensions on green financing of ‘Shari’ah’ based banking in Bangladesh. The study has also used secondary data relevant to articles, journals, books, and conference papers for theoretical development. In order to validate the findings, the necessary statistical measures include 5 point Likert scale, mean, and rank are used in the study. The study revealed that ‘Shari,ah’ based banking have made significant contribution in green financing that promote the preservation of natural resources and the need to respect all living things. The study seems to carry an enormous academic value since a few studies have been undertaken in this area. The results could be useful to the government, Bangladesh Bank, NGOS, Donors, international agency, World Bank, IMF, Academic researchers and national policy makers who have been making endeavor to save the environment in developing countries as well as Bangladesh as a whole

The N-terminus of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae G protein-coupled receptor Ste2p: formation of dimer interfaces and negative regulation

    Get PDF
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), the largest family of membrane proteins on the cell surface, play essential roles in signal transduction in all eukaryotic organisms. These proteins are responsible for sensing and detecting a wide range of extracellular stimuli and translating them to intracellular responses. This signaling requires a tight control for receptor activation without which abnormal signal leads to diseases. In fact, malfunctions of these receptors are associated with numerous pathological conditions and currently an estimated 40-50% of therapeutic drugs are designed to target these receptors suggesting that further increases in understanding of GPCRs and the signaling pathways they initiate will lead to new and more specific drug targets. We have used Saccharomyces cerevisiae GPCR Ste2p as a model system to understand structure-function relationships of these receptors. In this study, the role of the extracellular N-terminus has been examined using various biophysical methods with the anticipation to uncover its role in receptor function. It was found that some residues in the extracellular N-terminus were not accessible to a sulfhydryl reagent and that the alternating pattern of accessibility is consistent with the structure of a beta strand. This beta strand was found to be involved in dimer formation. Moreover, a conserved tyrosine residue in the middle of the beta strand was found to interact with two residues in the extracellular loop 1. It was also found that the N-terminus is involved in negative regulation and important for cell surface expression

Scarcity of efficient and talented workforce is important challenges for the organization mostly available in developing countries like Bangladesh. Pressure from globalization and economic integration, retaining talent human resources are the strategic challenges for most of the organization. This study aimed to empirically test a talent management model developed from the literature review in the organization available in Bangladesh. In the model HR practices and employee attitudes towards organization were considered for the independent variable and decision of the employee to stay in the organization was considered for the dependent variable. Primary data was gathered from the employee working in management level at different manufacturing, service, and government organization. Descriptive statistics using SPSS 22 was applied to analyze the relationships among the study variable. Results from the analysis showed that HR practices and employee attitudes towards organizational satisfaction and pride have a significant influence on the decision of the employee to stay in the organization. HR practices have a substantial direct association with the decision of the employee to remain in the organization. At the same, HR practices was found indirectly associated with employee decides to stay through employee attitudes. Findings of the current research are expected to add value in the existing literature and deliver guideline for the manager struggling for keeping talent in the organization.
