Get PDF
In this paper, samples of Polyacrylamide (PAAm) nanosilica nanocomposites were prepared having different concentration of nanosilica (0.125, 0.25, and 0.5). Polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were blended with different ratio (3/1, 1/1, 1/3) using solution-cast technique. The prepared films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffractions (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR spectra showed the presence of hydrogen bonding between–CONH2 groups in PAAm and –OH group in PVA and confirm the hydrophilic nature of the blends. X-ray diffractions shows the presence of a strong broad peak centered at 22Âș (2Ξ) confirms the amorphous nature of silica which is supposed to be the characteristic of SiO2. The results obtained from different experimental techniques were supported by SEM image analysis. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites enhanced by increasing the silica content in the blend. The DC electrical conductivity was studied for all prepared samples. It was found that the conductivity increase by increasing silica content as well as, increased by increasing the wt% of PVA

Compost is stable humus like product resulting from biological decomposition of organic matter under controlled conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the combined effect of compost with urea nitrogen on some soil properties, growth and yield of sweet pepper. This study comprised a number of experimentations conducted over two consecutive seasons (2009/10-2010/11) at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Gezira and laboratories of CIRAD in France. Compost was applied at 0, 10 and 20 t ha-1 combined with N at 0, 43 and 86 kg ha-1 in the form of urea. The results showed that application of compost alone or in combination with urea nitrogen improved soil properties and hence growth and yield of sweet pepper. Improvement of those parameters was more pronounced when the urea and compost were combined, especially at the higher rates. Combination of urea and compost presumably improved availability of nitrogen from the organic source to sweet pepper and, therefore, positively affected growth and yield of the crop. The extent of improvement was less when urea nitrogen and organic manures were applied in the same season. Hence, it could be recommended to fertilize sweet pepper with compost and urea at the rate of 86 kg N/ ha

Background: Breast-feeding of infants is associated with their better biological, psychological and intellectual development. However, many factors affect the volume and composition of human milk such as stage of lactation and maternal diet. Many breast-feeding Muslim mothers fast the lunar month of Ramadan. The effects of fasting on milk constituents have not been previously studied in Sudan. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the variations between milk constituents during fasting and non-fasting periods among a group of Sudanese women.Materials and Methods: Twenty four healthy breast-feeding mothers volunteered to participate in this cross-sectional study. Each mother provided 100 ml of breast milk during fasting and again 2 weeks after end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Milk was properly stored and analyzed for the various constituents, using the appropriate laboratory methods. The main constituents analyzed were: ash, protein, lactose, iron and electrolytes. Results: The age range of lactating women was between 18 and 38 years, mean (+SD) 28.8 (± 5.15 years). Most mothers 17 (70.8%) were house-wives. Analysis of breast milk during fasting and non-fasting periods showed that: lactose, protein, sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphate were significantly decreased in the fasting breast milk compared with the non-fasting milk (p=0.01), while total soluble solid, moisture, ash and iron constituents had not significantly changed during fasting. Conclusion: Fasting of Ramdan significantly affects proteins, carbohydrates and electrolytes in breast milk. Keywords: breast-feeding, milk constituents, Ramadan, fasting

Good management of soil and water use is one of the most important factors in agricultural sustainability, and intercropping systems are an important component of good agricultural practices. Thus, a field experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Arab Al-Awamer Research Station, Assiut Governorate, Agriculture Research Center, Egypt, during the summer seasons of 2021 and 2022 to investigate the effect of maize (M) + peanut (P) intercropping system on productivity, water use efficiency, and profitability at varying irrigation regimes. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design using a split-plot arrangement with three replicates. Irrigation regimes (120, 100 and 80% ETc) were assigned to the main plots, while the intercropping systems (100% P + 25% M, 100% P + 33% M and 100% P + 50% M) were allocated to the sub-plots. The results showed that most traits of peanut and maize decreased substantially under the 80% ETc irrigation regime. While the largest values of traits were associated with the 120 % ETc. Averaged across the two seasons, the highest values of net return (1,441 US$/ha) were obtained when 100% peanut plants were intercropped with 25% maize at 120% ETc irrigation regime. Therefore, we recommend intercrop maize (25%) with peanut (100%) irrigated with 120% ETc to achieve higher yields and net return. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1041338

Infertility as a social and psychological problem among middle east natives. Among them, Transvaginal ultrasound (TVU) and hormonal tests have been selected to evaluate infertility in this study. The objective was to assess the infertility factors and their relative impact in pregnancy and to deduce the equation to predict infertility. Methods: a retrospective data (morphometric pathologies of uterus and ovaries using TVU and laboratory hormones (FSH, LH)) have been collected from clinics for 180 women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in Sudan. The data analyzed by SPSS. The results showed that there were 120 (66.7%) infertile and 60 (33.3%) fertile ladies based on the marriage date. The common ovarian causes of infertility were the polycystic ovary (PCOs) 23.3%, simple cyst 6.1%, hemorrhagic cyst, 4.4%, and uterus causes: 6.7% intramural fibroma, 6.1% retroverted uterus, 2.8% submural fibroma, 2.2 polyps. The general accuracy of Stepwise Linear Discriminant Analysis (SLDA) was 78.9%, for infertile was 70.8% and for fertile 95%. Larger ovarian width indicates significance (p smaller than 0.05) infertility and FSH level low among infertile ladies, but LH is less dependent on discriminatio

Abstract

Background and objective

There has been a growing interest in objective assessment of speech in dysphonic patients for the classification of the type and severity of voice pathologies using automatic speech recognition (ASR). The aim of this work was to study the accuracy of the conventional ASR system (with Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) based front end and hidden Markov model (HMM) based back end) in recognizing the speech characteristics of people with pathological voice.

Materials and methods

The speech samples of 62 dysphonic patients with six different types of voice disorders and 50 normal subjects were analyzed. The Arabic spoken digits were taken as an input. The distribution of the first four formants of the vowel /a/ was extracted to examine deviation of the formants from normal.

Results

There was 100% recognition accuracy obtained for Arabic digits spoken by normal speakers. However, there was a significant loss of accuracy in the classifications while spoken by voice disordered subjects. Moreover, no significant improvement in ASR performance was achieved after assessing a subset of the individuals with disordered voices who underwent treatment.

Conclusion

The results of this study revealed that the current ASR technique is not a reliable tool in recognizing the speech of dysphonic patients.</p

AbstractBackgroundAcute coronary syndrome remains the principal cause of death, so the early diagnosis is of great importance. Cardiac troponin is the preferred biomarker for acute myocardial infarction. Cardiac chest pain immediately increased copeptin secretion. The combination of copeptin and cardiac troponin I is being suggested for early diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome.SubjectIt was done to emphasize the importance of association of copeptin, cardiac troponin I and high sensitive C reactive protein to confirm the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris in patients with a cardiac chest pain.MethodThe current study enrolled 22 patients with acute myocardial infarction as group i and 33 patients with unstable angina pectoris as group ii. The third group consisted of 23 apparently healthy persons. Patients and controls were subjecting to laboratory investigations, which include the levels of copeptin, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin high sensitive C reactive protein creatine kinase MB fraction, lipid and I profile.ResultsWe found a significant increase of copeptin in group i when compared to group iii (30.01±12.92) (9.54±3.55), respectively, p value=0.000 and group ii (30.01±12.92) (11.16±4.58) respectively, p value 0.000, but a non-significant difference in group ii when compared to group iii (11.16±4.58) (9.54±3.55) respectively, p value=0.160. Also cardiac troponin I showed a significant increase in group i when compared to group ii (136.73±26.07) (11.18±3.79), p value=0.000, and group iii (136.73±26.07) (9.61±3.70) respectively, p value=0.000, but a non-significant difference between group ii (11.18±3.79), and group iii (9.61±3.70), p value=0.129. There was a positive correlation between copeptin and cardiac troponin I within group i, r=0.718, p value=0.000.ConclusionIn suspected acute coronary syndrome, determination of copeptin and cardiac troponin I provides a remarkable negative predictive value, which aids in early and safe ruling out of myocardial infarction

Abstract

Background

Head and neck cancer including oral cancer is considered to develop by accumulated genetic alterations and the major pathway is cancerization from lesions such as intraepithelial dysplasia in oral leukoplakia and erythroplakia. The relationship of proliferation markers with the grading of dysplasia is uncertain. The involvement of EBV in oral carcinogenesis is not fully understood.

Aim

The present study was designed to investigate the role of EBV and DNA Topoisomerase II∝ (DNA-Topo II∝) during oral carcinogenesis and to examine the prognostic significance of these protein expressions in OSCCs.

Methods

Using specific antibodies for EBV and DNA-Topo II∝, we examined protein expressions in archival lesion tissues from 16 patients with oral epithelial dysplasia, 22 oral squamous cell carcinoma and 20 normal oral mucosa by immunohistochemistry. Clinical information was obtained through the computerized retrospective database from the tumor registry.

Results

DNA-Topo II∝ was expressed in all examined specimens. Analysis of Variance ANOVA revealed highly significant difference (P < 0.01) in young aged labial tissues and significant (P ≀ 0.05) in gingival and not significant (P > 0.05) in inferior surface of tongue and in hard palatal tissues. Significant differences were observed between OEDs and NSE (P < 0.001) and SCCs and controls (P < 0.001), also, significant differences could be observed between SCCs and OEDs. DNA-Topo II∝ expression was significantly higher in tumors of low differentiation versus tumors of moderate and high differentiation (P < 0.001), DNA-Topo II∝ expression was correlated with age, tumor size, tumor stage, node metastasis and tumor differentiation, but not with gender and tumor site. None of normal squamous epithelium (NSE) expressed EBV. Heterogenous reactivity for EBV was observed through the series of dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma. Its expression increased progressively with lymph node metastasis and low tumor differentiation, but no significant association could be observed with other clinicopathological parameters. EBV protein expression was increased with elevated Topo II-∝ LI in OEDs and OSCCs. A tendency to positive correlation between EBV and Topo II∝ expression was observed in OEDs but not in OSCCs.

Conclusion

EBV and DNA Topo II-αLI expression are possible indicators in oral carcinogenesis and may be valuable diagnostic and prognostic indices in oral carcinoma.</p
