High-pressure processing treatment for ready-to-drink Sabah Snake Grass juice

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate the effect of high-pressure processing (HPP) at different pressures (300, 400, and 500) MPa and 5 min processing time on the physicochemical properties, the microbiology count, the bioactive compounds, the antioxidant capacity, and the sensory attributes of ready-to-drink Sabah Snake Grass juice during 36 days of storage. HPP treatment at (400 and 500) MPa significantly (p ≤ .05) reduced the microbial counts in the juice. In contrast, the pH and total soluble solid content were maintained during the HPP treatments. The HPP treatments resulted in a significantly higher amount of total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity than the untreated samples. However, the sensory quality of the juice subjected to (300 and 400) MPa was strongly preferred as compared to the juice subjected to the 500 MPa. In conclusion, the HPP treatment at 400 MPa was the most effective pressure treatment for processing Sabah Snake Grass juice

The Role of Computed Tomography (CT) Scan in Assessment of the Parametrial Involvement in Early Stage Cervical Carcinoma

This retrospective study is aimed at evaluating the role of CT scan in predicting parametrium involvement in early stage of cervical carcinoma. It was conducted in a Gynaecologic Oncology Centre, Hospital Alor Star from January 2004 till December 2008. All patients with operable stage I and II cervical cancer had pelvic CT scan for evaluation of parametrium involvement before undergoing radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy. Parametrial streakiness or presence of infiltration suggested local invasion. Following radical hysterectomy, the specimens sent for histological confirmation and the correlation between the CT scan finding and the histopathology result was studied. The result revealed a total of 104 patients with operable stage cervical carcinoma had pelvic CT scan. The sensitivity and the specificity of CT scan in assessing parametrial involvement was 33.3% and 84.8%, respectively. In conclusion, CT scan had high specificity but low sensitivity in determining parametrial involvement in early stage of cervical cancer. Hence, routine preoperative pelvic CT scan has a limited role in assessing parametrial involvement in early stage cervical carcinoma

This study was conducted to determine secondary school students' achievement and interest in Jawi skills through the use of Jawi skill learning modules developed by the researcher. The participants were form one students were selected by the school and then divided into two groups. The first group of 30 students were classified as the experimental group and the second group of 30 were classified as the control group. The experimental group had their teaching and learning process with the researcher whiles the control group had their teaching and learning process with the Islamic Education teacher of the school. These two group were distinguished in the way they learn Jawi skills. The experimental group used the Jawi sklls learning modules and the control group was using the school-based assessment (PBS) modules. Each group was to answer the pre and post questionnaire as well as the pre and post test in each part of the module. Data were collected and analyzed usng SPSS version 16.0. The value of Cronbach Alpha foe the questionnaire items for the pilot study conducted was 0.785. The study found a significant difference between the pre and post test for achievement of experimental group. However, there was no significant difference between pre and post test for interest in Jawi skills. The report also found a number of implications forparents, school and secondary school students. Recommendations for futher research are also proposed at the end of the study
