    This Article focuses on the case of Islamic Investment Company of the Gulf (Bahamas) Ltd. v. Symphony Gems N.V. & Others (“Symphony Gems”). Symphony Gems is the first instance where a Western court of law ruled on an Islamic financial transaction. Symphony Gems illuminates the challenges and tensions within the industrial complex of Islamic finance as it seeks to exist and thrive in a commercial reality where the regulatory framework and its associated assumptions (both theoretical as well as those of commercial practice) differ markedly from those of Islamic law and the contemporary Islamic financial industry. The resulting transactions often deviate from the classical modes or forms upon which they are supposed to be based. From a conventional finance perspective, Islamic transactions can be criticized as being anomalous, inefficiently structured and obliquely documented. Symphony Gems arose out of the applicability of an Islamic financial contract known as a murabahah. This Article will explain both the conceptual basis and the contemporary usage of the murabahah contract and, more generally, the challenges of integrating Islamic financial concepts into the Anglo-American legal system that predominates the modern global economy. Murabahah contracts, simply stated, involve the sale of an item, through a middleman, in which the ultimate buyer is aware of the middleman\u27s costs in obtaining the item. As discussed later in this Article, murabahah contracts in contemporary practice closely approximate conventional financing mechanisms, particularly the economics underlying a similarly-profiled conventional commercial financing. This is why murabahah contracts are so popular. Therefore, it is not surprising that the first instance in which a Western court of law has examined and opined upon an Islamic financial contract involves a murabahah sale

    Imputation Aided Methylation Analysis

    Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis is of broad interest to medical research because of its central role in human development and disease. However, generating high-quality methylomes on a large scale is particularly expensive due to technical issues inherent to DNA treatment with bisulfite, requiring deeper than usual sequencing. In silico methodologies, such as imputation, can be used to address this limitation and improve the coverage and quality of data produced in these experiments. Imputation is a statistical technique where missing values are substituted with computed values. The process involves leveraging information from reference data to calculate probable values for missing data points. In this thesis, imputation is explored for its potential to increase the value of methylation datasets sequenced at different depths: 1. First, a new R package, Methylation Analysis ToolkiT (MATT), was developed to deal with large numbers of WGBS datasets in a computationally- and memory-efficient manner. 2. Second, the performance of DNA methylation-specific and generic imputation tools were assessed by down-sampling high-quality (100x) WGBS datasets to determine the extent to which missing data can be recovered and the accuracy of imputed values. 3. Third, to overcome shortfalls within existing tools, a novel imputation tool was developed, termed Global IMputation of cpg MEthylation (GIMMEcpg). GIMMEcpg default implementation is based on Model Stacking and outperforms existing tools in accuracy and speed. 4. Lastly, to demonstrate its potential, GIMMEcpg was used to impute ten shallow (17x) WGBS datasets from healthy volunteers of the Personal Genome Project UK with high accuracy. Moreover, the extent of missing and low-quality data, as well as the reproducibility and accuracy of methylation datasets, were explored for different data types (Microarrays, Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS), Whole Genome Bisulfite Sequencing (WGBS), EM-Seq and Nanopore sequencing)

    Detection rates of recurrent prostate cancer : 68Gallium (Ga)-labelled prostate-specific membrane antigen versus choline PET/CT scans. A systematic review

    Background: The aim of this work was to assess the use of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-labelled radiotracers in detecting the recurrence of prostate cancer. PSMA is thought to have higher detection rates when utilized in positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans, particularly at lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, compared with choline-based scans. Methods: A systematic review was conducted comparing choline and PSMA PET/CT scans in patients with recurrent prostate cancer following an initial curative attempt. The primary outcomes were overall detection rates, detection rates at low PSA thresholds, difference in detection rates and exclusive detection rates on a per-person analysis. Secondary outcome measures were total number of lesions, exclusive detection by each scan on a per-lesion basis and adverse side effects. Results: Overall detection rates were 79.8% for PSMA and 66.7% for choline. There was a statistically significant difference in detection rates favouring PSMA [OR (M–H, random, 95% confidence interval (CI)) 2.27 (1.06, 4.85), p = 0.04]. Direct comparison was limited to PSA < 2 ng/ml in two studies, with no statistically significant difference in detection rates between the scans [OR (M–H, random, 95% CI) 2.37 (0.61, 9.17) p = 0.21]. The difference in detection on the per-patient analysis was significantly higher in the PSMA scans (p < 0.00001). All three studies reported higher lymph node, bone metastasis and locoregional recurrence rates in PSMA. Conclusions: PSMA PET/CT has a better performance compared with choline PET/CT in detecting recurrent disease both on per-patient and per-lesion analysis and should be the imaging modality of choice while deciding on salvage and nonsystematic metastasis-directed therapy strategies.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Examining price and service competition among retailers in a supply chain under potential demand disruption

    © 2017 Elsevier Ltd Supply chain disruptions management has attracted significant attention among researchers and practitioners. The paper aims to examine the effect of potential market demand disruptions on price and service level for competing retailers. To investigate the effect of potential demand disruptions, we consider both a centralized and a decentralized supply chain structure. To analyze the decentralized supply chain, the Manufacturing Stackelberg (MS) game theoretical approach was undertaken. The analytical results were tested using several numerical analyses. It was shown that price and service level investment decisions are significantly influenced by demand disruptions to retail markets. For example, decentralized decision makers tend to lower wholesale and retail prices under potential demand disruptions, whereas a proactive retailer needs to increase service level with an increased level of possible disruptions. This research may aid managers to analyze disruptions prone market and to make appropriate decision for price and service level. The manufacturer or the retailers will also be able to better determine when to close a market based on the proposed analysis by considering anticipated disruptions. The benefits and usefulness of the proposed approach are explained through a real-life case adopted from a toy supply chain in Bangladesh
