Higher Order and boundary Scaling Fields in the Abelian Sandpile Model

The Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM) is a paradigm of self-organized criticality (SOC) which is related to c=2c=-2 conformal field theory. The conformal fields corresponding to some height clusters have been suggested before. Here we derive the first corrections to such fields, in a field theoretical approach, when the lattice parameter is non-vanishing and consider them in the presence of a boundary.Comment: 7 pages, no figure

Computed Tomographic measurement of distal femor rotation in Iranian population

Background: Proper rotation of components in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) will largely affect the postoperative outcome. Ethnical variation may affect rotational profile. We aimed to evaluate distal femur rotation in Iranian population using transepicondylar axes. Methods: From a total of 450 knee CT scans and via consecutive sampling, 150 qualified subjects with normal lower extremities alignment were selected comprising 96 (64) males and 54 (36) females aging 17-80 years. The posterior condylar angle and condylar twist angles were defined as angles between either surgical epicondylar axis (line connecting lateral epicondylar prominence and the medial sulcus) or clinical epicondylar axis (line connecting most prominent points of both epicondyle) and posterior conylar line. Data were compared among genders. Results: Average age of our samples was 43 years (ranging 11-80). Mean (±sd) values for posterior condylar angle and condylar twist angles were 2.35° (±1.34) and 5.77° (±1.70), respectively. The former variable was not discernible in twenty of our subjects because of obscure medial sulcus. Our findings were totally appeared similar to studies from other ethnicities and the observed minor differences may have originated from amount of osteoarthritis and malalignment. Conclusion: Overall, Iranian distal femur rotational profile was similar to other reports. Some minor observed differences may be partially due to samples' age and different amount of knee osteoarthritis. It is proposed to rely on several methods for determining rotational profile while performing TKA. Moreover, preoperative computed tomography should be fully scrutinized especially in severely osteoarthitic knees

Patterned and Disordered Continuous Abelian Sandpile Model

We study critical properties of the continuous Abelian sandpile model with anisotropies in toppling rules that produce ordered patterns on it. Also we consider the continuous directed sandpile model perturbed by a weak quenched randomness and study critical behavior of the model using perturbative conformal field theory and show the model has a new random fixed point.Comment: 11 Pages, 6 figure

Simplifying Random Satisfiability Problem by Removing Frustrating Interactions

How can we remove some interactions in a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) such that it still remains satisfiable? In this paper we study a modified survey propagation algorithm that enables us to address this question for a prototypical CSP, i.e. random K-satisfiability problem. The average number of removed interactions is controlled by a tuning parameter in the algorithm. If the original problem is satisfiable then we are able to construct satisfiable subproblems ranging from the original one to a minimal one with minimum possible number of interactions. The minimal satisfiable subproblems will provide directly the solutions of the original problem.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figure

Wind barriers optimization for minimizing collector mirror soiling in a parabolic trough collector plant

Wind barriers, according to their sizes and shapes, can effectively control, shift and even modify the airflow field in their downstream. These structures can accelerate the wind flow over the mirror field and move the airborne particles away from the mirrors. For example, in concentrated solar power plants it is highly desirable to engineer the system in a way that fewer particles are deposited within the solar field, in particular, onto mirror surfaces. Therefore, design optimization of dust barriers could significantly impact the mirror soiling and favourably reduce the cleaning water consumption of a solar power plant. This study focuses on the optimization of a solid wind barrier around a parabolic trough collector plant for their protection against dust soiling. The presented simulation results show that an optimum solid wind barrier is able to direct large amount of particles (in this study, more than 86%) to pass over the solar field with very small fraction (around 0.8%) being deposited on the mirrors. In addition, it was found that the barrier wall is more effective in deflecting the larger particles from the solar field.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/apenergy2019-09-01hj2018Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineerin

Spatial Asymmetric Two dimensional Continuous Abelian Sandpile Model

We insert some asymmetries in the continuous Abelian sandpile models, such as directedness and ellipticity. We analyze probability distribution of different heights and also find the field theory corresponding to the models. Also we find the fields associated with some height variables.Comment: 14 Pages, 11 Figure

Abelian Sandpile Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We check the universality properties of the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model by computing some of its properties on the honeycomb lattice. Exact expressions for unit height correlation functions in presence of boundaries and for different boundary conditions are derived. Also, we study the statistics of the boundaries of avalanche waves by using the theory of SLE and suggest that these curves are conformally invariant and described by SLE2.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

Note on SLE and logarithmic CFT

It is discussed how stochastic evolutions may be linked to logarithmic conformal field theory. This introduces an extension of the stochastic Loewner evolutions. Based on the existence of a logarithmic null vector in an indecomposable highest-weight module of the Virasoro algebra, the representation theory of the logarithmic conformal field theory is related to entities conserved in mean under the stochastic process.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, v2: version to be publishe

Treatment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus by persian medicine: A case report

    Get PDF
Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a chronic disease in adults. The standard treatment in this type of hydrocephalus is shunting which is accompanied by some complications and there is also uncertainty about response to treatment. Therefore, surgery is performed in only 10-20 of the cases with iNPH. Currently, oral acetazolamide and repetitive lumbar puncture for drainage of the cerebrospinal fluid are recommended in many patients. In this case report, a 34-year-old female patient with iNPH is introduced who received acetazolamide for the past two years, and repetitive lumbar punctures. These treatments reduced her symptoms for a short time, but had never disappeared the symptoms and after a while they intensified again. The patient was treated by Persian medicine and nutrition modification was also done. Within one year, there was no recurrence of the disease and no need for lumbar puncture. This case report highlights the need for further research on Persian medicine in treatment of iNPH. It is believed that Persian medicine could be of great benefit along with current treatments of hydrocephalus. © 2019, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences. All rights reserved
