    Static aeroelastic analysis for generic configuration aircraft

    A static aeroelastic analysis capability that can calculate flexible air loads for generic configuration aircraft was developed. It was made possible by integrating a finite element structural analysis code (MSC/NASTRAN) and a panel code of aerodynamic analysis based on linear potential flow theory. The framework already built in MSC/NASTRAN was used and the aerodynamic influence coefficient matrix is computed externally and inserted in the NASTRAN by means of a DMAP program. It was shown that deformation and flexible airloads of an oblique wing aircraft can be calculated reliably by this code both in subsonic and supersonic speeds. Preliminary results indicating importance of flexibility in calculating air loads for this type of aircraft are presented

    Experiments in fault tolerant software reliability

    The reliability of voting was evaluated in a fault-tolerant software system for small output spaces. The effectiveness of the back-to-back testing process was investigated. Version 3.0 of the RSDIMU-ATS, a semi-automated test bed for certification testing of RSDIMU software, was prepared and distributed. Software reliability estimation methods based on non-random sampling are being studied. The investigation of existing fault-tolerance models was continued and formulation of new models was initiated

    Entanglement and Superdense Coding with Linear Optics

    We discuss a scheme for a full superdense coding of entangled photon states employing only linear-optics elements. By using the mixed basis consisting of four states that are unambiguously distinguishable by a standard and polarizing beam splitters we can deterministically transfer four messages by manipulating just one of the two entangled photons. The sender achieves the determinism of the transfer either by giving up the control over 50% of sent messages (although known to her) or by discarding 33% of incoming photons.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

    Electrical transients in the ion-beam-induced nitridation of silicon

    We have studied the dynamics of the initial stages of silicon nitride formation on siliconsurfaces under nitrogen beam bombardment in the secondary ion mass spectrometry apparatus. We have shown that the secondary ion signal exhibits damped oscillations below the critical impact angle for nitride formation. We have described this oscillatory response by a second-order differential equation and argued that it is initiated by some fluctuations in film thickness followed by the fluctuations in surface charging

    New Class of 4-Dim Kochen-Specker Sets

    We find a new highly symmetrical and very numerous class (millions of non-isomorphic sets) of 4-dim Kochen-Specker (KS) vector sets. Due to the nature of their geometrical symmetries, they cannot be obtained from previously known ones. We generate the sets from a single set of 60 orthogonal spin vectors and 75 of their tetrads (which we obtained from the 600-cell) by means of our newly developed "stripping technique." We also consider "critical KS subsets" and analyze their geometry. The algorithms and programs for the generation of our KS sets are presented.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; to appear in J. Math. Phys.     An experimental evaluation of software redundancy as a strategy for improving reliability

    The strategy of using multiple versions of independently developed software as a means to tolerate residual software design faults is suggested by the success of hardware redundancy for tolerating hardware failures. Although, as generally accepted, the independence of hardware failures resulting from physical wearout can lead to substantial increases in reliability for redundant hardware structures, a similar conclusion is not immediate for software. The degree to which design faults are manifested as independent failures determines the effectiveness of redundancy as a method for improving software reliability. Interest in multi-version software centers on whether it provides an adequate measure of increased reliability to warrant its use in critical applications. The effectiveness of multi-version software is studied by comparing estimates of the failure probabilities of these systems with the failure probabilities of single versions. The estimates are obtained under a model of dependent failures and compared with estimates obtained when failures are assumed to be independent. The experimental results are based on twenty versions of an aerospace application developed and certified by sixty programmers from four universities. Descriptions of the application, development and certification processes, and operational evaluation are given together with an analysis of the twenty versions

    New insights into the rift to drift transition across the northeastern Nova Scotian margin from wide-angle seismic waveform inversion and reflection imaging

Nevertheless, features of critical importance for understanding rifting processes have been poorly resolved. We derive a high-resolution velocity model by applying full waveform inversion to the dense OETR-2009 wide-angle seismic profile crossing the northeastern Nova Scotian margin. We then create a coincident reflection image by prestack depth migrating the multichannel seismic data. This allows for the first detailed interpretation of the structures related to the final stages of continental breakup and incipient oceanic accretion at the Eastern North America Margin. Our interpretation includes a hyperextended continental domain overlying partially serpentinized mantle, followed by a 10-km-wide domain consisting of a continental block surrounded by layered and bright reflectors indicative of magmatic extrusions. A major fault, representing the continent-ocean boundary, marks a sharp seaward transition to a 16-km-wide domain characterized by smoother basement with chaotic reflectors, where no continental materials are present and a 3-km-thick embryonic oceanic crust overlying partially serpentinized mantle is created by the breakup magmatism. Further seaward, thin oceanic crust overlies the serpentinized mantle suggesting magma-poor oceanic spreading with variable magma supply as determined from variable basement topography, 2ā€“4 km thick volcanic layer, and magnetic anomalies. Our results demonstrate that magmatism played an important role in the lithospheric breakup of the area crossed by the OETR-2009 profile. Considering that the northeastern Nova Scotian margin has been classified as amagmatic, large margin-parallel variations in magma supply likely characterize a single rift segment.H.     Kochen-Specker Sets and Generalized Orthoarguesian Equations

    Every set (finite or infinite) of quantum vectors (states) satisfies generalized orthoarguesian equations (nnOA). We consider two 3-dim Kochen-Specker (KS) sets of vectors and show how each of them should be represented by means of a Hasse diagram---a lattice, an algebra of subspaces of a Hilbert space--that contains rays and planes determined by the vectors so as to satisfy nnOA. That also shows why they cannot be represented by a special kind of Hasse diagram called a Greechie diagram, as has been erroneously done in the literature. One of the KS sets (Peres') is an example of a lattice in which 6OA pass and 7OA fails, and that closes an open question of whether the 7oa class of lattices properly contains the 6oa class. This result is important because it provides additional evidence that our previously given proof of noa =< (n+1)oa can be extended to proper inclusion noa < (n+1)oa and that nOA form an infinite sequence of successively stronger equations.Comment: 16 pages and 5 figure
