    Performance evaluation of a technology independent security gateway for Next Generation Networks

    With the all IP based Next Generation Networks being deployed around the world, the use of real-time multimedia service applications is being extended from normal daily communications to emergency situations. However, currently different emergency providers utilise differing networks and different technologies. As such, conversations could be terminated at the setup phase or data could be transmitted in plaintext should incompatibility issues exit between terminals. To this end, a novel security gateway that can provide the necessary security support for incompatible terminals was proposed, developed and implemented to ensure the successful establishment of secure real-time multimedia conversations. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the security gateway through the use 40 Boghe softphone acting as the terminals. The experimental results demonstrate that the best performance of the prototype was achieved by utilising a multithreading and multi-buffering technique, with an average of 582 microseconds processing overhead. Based upon the ITU-Ts 150 milliseconds one way delay recommendation for voice communications, it is envisaged that such a marginal overhead will not be noticed by users in practice

    QoE Enhancement for Stereoscopic 3DVideo Quality Based on Depth and Color Transmission over IP Networks: A Review

    In this review paper we focus on the enhancement of Quality of Experience (QoE) for stereoscopic 3D video based on depth information. We focus on stereoscopic video format because it takes less bandwidth than other format when 3D video is transmitted over an error channel but it is easily affected by the network parameters such as packets loss, delay and jitter. The packet loss on 3D video has more impact in the depth information than other 3D video factors such as comfort, motion, disparity and discomfort. The packet loss on depth information causes undesired effect on color and depth maps. Therefore, in order to minimize quality degradation, the application of frame loss concealment technique is preferred. This technique is expected to improve the QoE for end users. In this paper we will also review 3D video factors and their challenges, methods of measuring the QOE, algorithms used for packets loss recovery.

    QoEMultiSDN: Management of Multimedia Services using MPTCP/SR in Softwarized and Virtualized Networks

    5G networks are set to empower new user experiences for multimedia streaming services by offering high data rates and low latency. The rapid growth of multimedia services, such as video streaming services over future softwarized 5G networks, poses great challenges for both service providers and network operators regarding service provisioning with high Quality of Experience (QoE). Network evolution towards Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) provides new opportunities to develop innovative ways to address the challenges. In this paper, we present a novel QoE-aware management scheme based on SDN/NFV by utilizing Multi-Path-TCP/Segment-Routing (MPTCP/SR) techniques and exploring information from both the network and client. The new scheme, entitled QoEMultiSDN, provides an optimized end-to-end QoE for multimedia service delivery. QoEMultiSDN employs two novel strategies to achieve this: (a) QoE-based multisource routing and QoE optimization, and (b) multipath protection and dynamic link-failure-free mechanisms. We implemented the proposed scheme over SDN through Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) experiments using Mininet, POX and OpenDaylight controllers, and compared its performance with MPTCP and regular TCP.     QualitySDN: Improving Video Quality using MPTCP and Segment Routing in SDN/NFV

    In this paper, we present a novel QoE-aware SDN/NFV system by utilizing and integrating Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) and Segment Routing (SR) paradigms. We propose a QoE-based Multipath Source Routing (QoEMuSoRo) algorithm that achieve an optimized end-to-end QoE for the end-user by forwarding MPTCP subflows using SR over SDN/NFV. We implement and validate the proposed scheme through DASH experiments using Mininet and POX controller. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal, we compare the performance of our QoE-aware MPTCP SDN/NFV SR-based proposal, the MPTCP and regular TCP in terms of system throughput and the end-user's QoE. Preliminary results shows that, our approach outperforms the other aforementioned methods

    End-to-middle-to-end solution for IMS media plane security

    IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) is becoming the prevailing candidate for managing future mobile multimedia communications, including critical communications such as public safety, emergency professionals and corporate networks. IMS security and privacy has gained much attention in the few last years. The review of recent IMS security activities stresses the inclusion of intermediate nodes in the media path of secured communications as an open issue. This paper presents an end-to-middle-to-end solution which enables the usage of IMS media plane elements such as recorders, transcoders and novel cross-ciphering functions in a secure way. The proposed solution, which is fully compliant with IMS, includes the network architecture, the signaling plane for session signaling and key management, and the media-plane security characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed solution can provide media interoperability (both transcoding and cross-ciphering) with a cost of 17 % overhead to a standard IMS call setup in the signaling plane

    IMPACT OF VIDEO RESOLUTION CHANGES ON QoE FOR ADAPTIVE VIDEO STREAMING

    HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has become the de-facto standard for video streaming to ensure continuous multimedia service delivery under irregularly changing network conditions. Many studies already investigated the detrimental impact of various playback characteristics on the Quality of Experience of end users, such as initial loading, stalling or quality variations. However, dedicated studies tackling the impact of resolution adaptation are still missing. This paper presents the results of an immersive audiovisual quality assessment test comprising 84 test sequences from four different video content types, emulated with an HAS adaptation mechanism. We employed a novel approach based on systematic creation of adaptivity conditions which were assigned to source sequences based on their spatio-temporal characteristics. Our experiment investigates the resolution switch effect with respect to the degradations in MOS for certain adaptation patterns. We further demonstrate that the content type and resolution change patterns have a significant impact on the perception of resolution changes. These findings will help develop better QoE models and adaptation mechanisms for HAS systems in the future

    Modeling Performance of Many-to-One Collective Communication Operations in Heterogeneous Clusters

    This paper presents a performance model for Many-to-One type communications on a dedicated heterogeneous cluster of workstations based on a switched Ethernet network. This study finds that Many-to-One communication is more complex than One-to-Many and Point-to-Point communications as it does not show a linear or even continuous dependence of the execution time on message sizes. It displays a very high jump in execution time for a significant range of message sizes. As a result, the proposed model is divided into three parts. The first part is for small sized messages whose model is linear, the second part models the congestion region, and the last part is for large message sizes where linearity resumes. The proposed model is validated for accuracy by the experiments on various platforms with different MPI implementations
