    Distribution of Korean Family Names

The family name distribution in Korea is investigated in comparison with previous studies in other countries. In Korea, both the family name and its birthplace, where the ancestor of the family originated, are commonly used to distinguish one family name from the others. The family name distributions with and without the information of the regional origins are analyzed by using different data sets of various sizes, and compared with previous studies performed in other countries. The growth rate of the family is empirically obtained. Contrary to commonly used assumptions, the growth rate is found to be higher for the smaller family.Comment: 13 pages in one column forma

Renormalization group evaluation of exponents in family name distributions

According to many phenomenological and theoretical studies the distribution of family name frequencies in a population can be asymptotically described by a power law. We show that the Galton-Watson process corresponding to the dynamics of a growing population can be represented in Hilbert space, and its time evolution may be analyzed by renormalization group techniques, thus explaining the origin of the power law and establishing the connection between its exponent and the ratio between the population growth and the name production rates.Comment: 8 pages, no figures, many typos correcte

The National Language Research Institute carried out a large-scale statistical study of the language of ninety magazines of 1956. The results were published in a series of reports. The data will soon be made public in a floppy disk including frequency of each written word-form. In this paper some statistical tables were revised based on the new data and some tables were added concerning variation in word-forms. It is pointed out that native Japanese words and verbs have more varieties in form while Chinese loans and proper nouns have fewer varieties

    On the Swim-bladder Gases.

The formation of the swim-bladder gases of some sea and fresh water fishes were investigated and the results may be summarized as follows : 1. As a rule, oxygen content in the swim-bladder is higher in a fish living at greater depth than at shallow, and sea water fishes, than fresh water ones. 2. Oxygen content in the swim-bladder of the fish living at great depth decreases after 1-2 days stay in the aquarium. 3. Carbon dioxide content in the swim-bladder of all fishes examined is very small. 4. Through the poisoning of carbon monoxide, the swim-bladder gas decreases in its oxygen content and increases slightly in its carbon dioxide. 5. Corresponding to the artificial increase or decrease of the external pressures influencing the body surface of the fish, oxygen content of the swim-bladder gases increases or decreases respectively. 6. After the evacuation of the swim-bladder gases, newly formed gases always contain high oxygen percentage. 7. When oxygen or carbon dioxide of high concentration are injected in the swim-bladder, these gases diffuse out easily through the wall of the swim-bladder during 1-2 days. 8. Oxygen dissociation curve of carp blood is remarkably steep compared with the human blood, and influenced very much with the presence of carbon dioxide so as to decrease the affinity of the blood to oxygen. 9. Histological examination of the swim-bladder of Sebastiscus marmoratus and Carassius auratus indicate characteristic structure of the blood capillaries which distributed in the internal layer of membranes and sinus-like dilated. 10. From the above experimental results, some considerations on the gas formation in the swim-bladder were offered.</p

Female Workers in Japan: Opportunities & Challenges

This study is based on a survey of male and female workers in organizations in and around Nagoya, Japan. It provides insights into gender issues within Japanese business organizations. The study finds that the female managers in Japan assess the managerial skills of women more positively than do their male counterparts. Business organizations in Japan are male-dominated and little is done to help women fit into the business culture. This is especially true when one considers the number of females in management ranks. Female workers in Japanese businesses perceive that they make many positive contributions to the workplace, such as focusing on process rather than just results, paying attention to details, showing compassion and care in decision making, expressing willingness to “go an extra mile,” being sensitive to human relations, and offering a fresh perspective to business problems. It is not popular in Japan for females to use legal means against accepting a slower rate of advancement to cope with gender-bias
