    Intervention to inhibit disruptive behavior (DB) in healthcare institutions remains an unmet need. This study intended to examine the feasibility of an organizational anger management (AM) program aimed at inhibiting DB triggered by anger. AM dissemination and awareness-building activities for all staff members (1366 individuals) were implemented from July 2020, including regularly held group AM introductory trainings, establishment of “I Will Not Get Angry Today” days (once per month), posting of AM promotion posters in all departments (changed monthly), disseminating AM-related knowledge through the in-hospital groupware application (twice per week), and introduction of AM training methods using the in-hospital periodical magazine. The number of responses to the awareness survey questionnaire 1 year after AM program was 730 (response rate: 54.2%). The results showed that the percentage of positive responses indicating that DB “Decreased” or “Somewhat Decreased” after AM program intervention was 35.8% overall. The percentages for nurses (n = 385) and non-nurses (n = 345) groups were 29.8% and 42.4%, respectively, showing a significantly lower value for nurses (p < 0.001). An organizational AM program aimed at inhibiting DB could be implemented at our facility. However, it was difficult to properly evaluate the efficacy due to the nature of the study

    Orthogonal antibody testing for COVID-19 among healthcare workers in a non-epidemic place and time: Japan's Iwate Prefecture, May 18-31, 2020

    Of the 47 prefectures in Japan, Iwate had the fewest cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), with the first diagnosis officially confirmed on July 28, 2020. A baseline serological survey of COVID-19 antibodies is essential to accurately evaluate an epidemic outbreak. The primary purpose of this study was to determine pre-epidemic prevalence of COVID-19 antibodies among healthcare workers, using two laboratory-based quantitative tests. In addition, a point-of-care (POC) qualitative test, rapid, simple, and convenient for primary care clinics, was compared with the laboratory-based tests. All antibody tests were performed on serum from 1,000 healthcare workers (mean age, 40 ± 11 years) in Iwate Prefectural Central Hospital, May 29-31, 2020. A COVID-19 case was defined as showing positive results in both laboratory-based quantitative tests. None of 1,000 samples had positive results in both of the laboratory immunoassays. The POC test showed positive results in 33 of 1,000 samples (3.3%) (95% confidence interval:2.19-4.41), but no samples were simultaneously positive in both laboratory-based tests. In conclusion, COVID-19 cases were not serologically confirmed by a baseline control study of healthcare workers at our hospital in late May, 2020. Moreover, the POC qualitative test may offer no advantage in areas with very low prevalence of COVID-19, due to higher false-positive reactions compared with laboratory-based quantitative immunoassays

    Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Developing after Eradication of Helicobacter pylori

    A 75-year-old man underwent endoscopic hemostatic therapy for hemorrhagic gastric ulcer in September 2002. After healing of the gastric ulcer, he underwent Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy in February 2003. In August 2007, an irregular tumor was detected in the lower esophagus at annual checkup for gastric cancer screening using X-ray. Endoscopic examination showed that the lower margin of the tumor almost coincided with the esophagogastric junction and that a short segment of Barrett's epithelium existed near the tumor. Biopsies of the tumor showed moderately to poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Mild reflux esophagitis and minor hiatal hernia was also observed, and the previously treated gastric ulcer was not recurrent. Absence of H. pylori was confirmed by serum antibody and urea breath test. Surgical resection of the lower esophagus and proximal stomach was performed. The tumor invaded into the muscularis propria of the esophageal wall but had no evidence of lymph node metastasis. Based on macroscopic and pathological findings, the tumor was recognized as esophageal adenocarcinoma. Previous endoscopic examination did not detect any apparent signs of tumor in the esophagogastric junction. As far as we know, this is the first report documenting a newly developed esophageal adenocarcinoma after the successful eradication of H. pylori

    Improved Measurements of Branching Fractions and CP Asymmetries in B-> eta h Decays

    Full text link
    We report improved measurements of B decays with an eta meson in the final state using 492 fb^{-1} of data collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+ e^- collider. We observe the decays B^{+-}-> eta pi^{+-} and B^{+-}-> eta K^{+-}; the measured branching fractions are Br(B^{+-}-> eta pi^{+-}) = (4.2+- 0.4(stat)+- 0.2(sys))x10^{-6} and Br(B^{+-}-> eta K^{+-}) = (1.9+-0.3(stat)^{+0.2}_{-0.1}(sys))x10^{-6}. The corresponding CP-violating asymmetries are measured to be -0.23+- 0.09(stat) +-0.02(sys) for eta pi^{+-} and -0.39+-0.16(stat)+-0.03(sys) for eta K^{+-}. We also search for B^0-> eta K^0 decays and set an upper limit of 1.9x10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Measurement of Azimuthal Asymmetries in Inclusive Production of Hadron Pairs in e+e- Annihilation at Belle

    The Collins effect connects transverse quark spin with a measurable azimuthal dependence in the yield of hadronic fragments around the quark's momentum vector. Using two different reconstruction methods we observe statistically significant azimuthal asymmetries for charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 10.52 GeV, which can be attributed to a transverse polarization of the primordial quarks. The measurement was performed using a sample of 79 million hadronic events collected with the Belle detector.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Search for B+ -> J/psi eta' K+ and B0 -> J/psi eta' Ks0 Decays

    Full text link
    We report the results of searches for B+ -> J/psi eta' K+ and B0 -> J/psi eta' Ks0 decays, using a sample of 388 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. No statistically significant signal is found for either of the two decay modes and upper limits for the branching fractions are determined to be B(B+ -> J/psi eta' K+) < 8.8 x 10^-5 and B(B0 -> J/psi eta' Ks0) < 2.5 x 10^-5 at 90% confidence level.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PRD Brief Repor

    Using 449 million BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider, we observe clear signals for B^+-> \bar{K}^0 K^+ and B^0-> \bar{K}^0 K^0 decays with 5.3 sigma and 6.0 sigma significance, respectively. We measure the branching fractions Br(B^+-> \bar{K}^0 K^+ = (1.22^{+0.32+0.13}_{-0.28-0.16})x10^{-6} and Br(B^0-> \bar{K}^0 K^0) = (0.87^{+0.25}_{-0.20} +- 0.09)x10^{-6}, and partial-rate asymmetries A_{CP}(B^+-> \bar{K}^0 K^+) = 0.13^{+0.23}_{-0.24}+- 0.02 and A_{CP}(B^0-> \bar{K}^0 K^0) = -0.58^{+0.73}_{-0.66}+- 0.04. From a simultaneous fit we also obtain Br(B^+-> K^0\pi^+)= (22.8^{+0.8}_{-0.7} +- 1.3)x 10^{-6} and A_{CP}(B^+-> K^0 \pi^+) = 0.03 +- 0.03 +- 0.01. The first and second error in the branching fractions and the partial-rate asymmetries are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed for B^0-> K^+ K^- decays, and for this branching fraction we set an upper limit of 4.1x10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
