    The Dynamics and Sensitivity Analysis of a Plunger-type Pressure Control Valve

    This paper is concerned with an analytical study of the dynamics of a plunger-type pneumatic pressure control valve, already proposed by the authors, which maintains a constant secondary pressure lower than the primary pressure, in spite of the change of the primary pressure or the fluctuation of the load connected with this valve. At first, the dynamics of the secondary pressure and the plunger movement, caused by changes of the primary pressure and the load, is analyzed by means of the state variable method. Furthermore, for improvement of responsibility, the conditions for adjusting system parameters are found through the root locus method. Next, the sensitivity analysis is applied to the investigation of the influences of parameter variations on the dynamics of the control valve. By means of simulation studies of sensitivity functions, we have shown which parameters are really significant and also which are not. Throughout these analytical and simulation studies, guidelines for improving the performance of a plunger-type pressure control valve are obtained

    Pure-Nickel-Coated Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Prepared by Electroless Deposition

    Pure-nickel-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been prepared by electroless deposition. Gluconic acid and hydrazine were respectively used as the complexing and reducing agents for nickel ions. The deposits were heat-treated. The microstructures and magnetic properties of the deposits were examined. The MWCNTs were homogeneously coated with pure nickel and their surfaces were relatively bumpy. These pure-nickel-coated MWCNTs exhibited ferromagnetism and had higher magnetizations and coercivities than electroless Ni-P alloy-coated MWCNTs.     Comprehensive treatment for severe periodontitis with pathologic tooth migration−related bimaxillary protrusion : A case report with 3-year follow-up

    Background: Patients with severe periodontitis often experience pathologic tooth migration (PTM), which impairs esthetics and leads to occlusal disharmony (e.g., premature contacts and/or traumatic occlusion) that can further exacerbate periodontitis. Here, we describe a patient who exhibited severe periodontitis with PTM-related bimaxillary protrusion. This report includes 3-year clinical outcomes following periodontal regenerative therapy, implant-anchored orthodontic therapy, and implant prosthodontics intended to achieve both functional and esthetic improvements. Case Description: A 63-year-old woman presented with the chief complaint of upper anterior tooth mobility. Clinical examination revealed excessive tooth mobility, deep periodontal pockets, and infrabony defects in all teeth. All teeth exhibited PTM; the mandibular anterior teeth exhibited marked protrusion caused by the progression of periodontitis. After initial periodontal therapy, periodontal regenerative therapy was performed in all molar regions. At 9 and 6 months postoperatively, comprehensive orthodontic treatment was initiated for the mandible and maxilla, respectively, using orthodontic anchorage devices to achieve acceptable functional occlusion. After orthodontic treatment, staged guided bone regeneration was performed and dental implants were placed in the severely resorbed maxillary anterior ridge. This comprehensive treatment yielded favorable periodontal conditions, stable occlusion, and good esthetic outcomes. Practical Implications: Favorable esthetics, stable occlusion, and highly cleansable periodontal tissues were achieved with well-planned interdisciplinary and comprehensive treatment, although the patient had severe periodontitis and PTM-related bimaxillary protrusion

    Search for a stochastic background of 100-MHz gravitational waves with laser interferometers

    This letter reports the results of a search for a stochastic background of gravitational waves (GW) at 100 MHz by laser interferometry. We have developed a GW detector, which is a pair of 75-cm baseline synchronous recycling (resonant recycling) interferometers. Each interferometer has a strain sensitivity of ~ 10^{-16} Hz^{-1/2} at 100 MHz. By cross-correlating the outputs of the two interferometers within 1000 seconds, we found h_{100}^2 Omega_{gw} < 6 times 10^{25} to be an upper limit on the energy density spectrum of the GW background in a 2-kHz bandwidth around 100 MHz, where a flat spectrum is assumed.Comment: Accepted by Phys.Rev.Lett.; 10 pages, 4 figure

    Monoclonal antibody to galactosylceramide: discrimination of structural difference in the ceramide moiety

    AbstractA mouse monoclonal antibody (mAb) was developed against monohexaosylceramide. This mAb differentially reacted on thin-layer chromatograms with 3 types of galactosylceramide (GalCer) obtained from bovine brain. Structural analysis of the 3 glycolipids revealed that they consisted of the same galactose and sphingosine but of apparently different fatty acids. Among the 3 GalCers, the mAb reacted with two GalCers which contained α-hydroxy fatty acids, but not with GalCer composed of nonhydroxy fatty acids. These findings suggest not only that the mAb discriminated the fatty acid composition in the ceramide moiety of GalCer, but also that the ceramide structure defines the immunological epitope as it is known to do for the carbohydrate moiety of glycosphingolipid

    Usage Survey of Personal Underfloor Air Outlet System and Thermal Environment Acceptability

    This study was aimed to clarify the usage of a personal air-conditioning system and to describe the characteristics of actual worker acceptance of the thermal environment. The results showed that the usage rate of the personal air-conditioning system was 90% and that most workers were satisfied with the system’s effect. Only a few workers reported that the environment was unacceptable despite the use of the system, and they expressed this even when the temperature and humidity were within a comfortable range. It was suggested that the complaints resulted from factors such as the individual thermal histories and changes in their metabolic rate upon returning to the office after performing outdoor activities

    IL-10 Inhibits Transforming Growth Factor-ß-Induction of Type I Collagen mRNA Expression via Both JNK and p38 Pathways in Human Lung Fibroblasts

    Transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) is a key factor for understanding the pathogenesis of fibrotic disorders such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). We have demonstrated that interleukin-10 (IL-10) suppresses TGF-ß-induced expression of type I collagen (COL1) mRNA in a human lung fibroblast cell line (WI-38). However, the inhibitory mechanism has not yet been clearly elucidated. Thus, in the current study, we investigate the effects of IL-10 blockade of TGF-ß signaling which regulates COL1 mRNA expression. In WI-38 cells, IL-10 inhibits TGF-ß-mediated phosphorylation of both, c-Jun HN2-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38, but does not suppress TGF-ß- mediated phosphorylation of Smad2 or affect TGF-ß-upregulation of Smad7 mRNA expression. In addition, SP600125 and SB203580, specific inhibitors of JNK and p38, respectively, attenuate TGF-ß-induced COL1 mRNA expression in WI-38 cells. These results suggest that IL-10 inhibits TGF-ß-induced COL1 mRNA expression via both JNK and p38 pathways but not Smad pathways in WI-38 cells. This inhibitory mechanism may provide a novel insight into therapeutic strategies for fibrotic disorders such as IPF
