    The 4.8 GHz LHC Schottky Pick-up System

    The LHC Schottky observation system is based on traveling wave type high sensitivity pickup structures operating at 4.8 GHz. The choice of the structure and operating frequency is driven by the demanding LHC impedance requirements, where very low impedance is required below 2 GHz, and good sensitivity at the selected band at 4.8 GHz. A sophisticated filtering and triple down-mixing signal processing chain has been designed and implemented in order to achieve the specified 100 dB instantaneous dynamic range without range switching. Detailed design aspects for the complete systems and test results without beam are presented and discussed

    Reduced selenium-binding protein 1 expression is associated with poor outcome in lung adenocarcinomas

    The effects of selenium, an essential nutrient with anti-carcinogenic properties, are mediated by selenium-binding proteins. The protein expression status of human selenium-binding protein 1 (SBP1) in human tumours and the exact function of this protein are not known. In this study, quantitative two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE) was used on 93 lung adenocarcinomas and ten uninvolved lung samples. Two likely isoforms of a 56 kD protein that showed a significantly decreased abundance in lung adenocarcinomas were observed. Tandem mass spectrometry and 2-D western blot analysis identified these two proteins as human SBP1. Tumour tissue microarrays were utilized to examine the cellular expression patterns of SBP1 using immunohistochemistry. The same tissue samples were examined for SBP1 mRNA expression using oligonucleotide microarrays. Two major SBP1 isoforms were detected, with an acidic isoform (457) being significantly down-regulated in lung adenocarcinomas compared with normal lung ( p = 0.02). Two additional more acidic SBP1 isoforms were only observed in normal lung. SBP1 protein isoforms and SBP1 mRNA levels were significantly decreased in poorly differentiated (versus moderately and well-differentiated), T2–T4 (versus T1), and bronchus-derived (versus bronchioloalveolar) tumours. Low levels of SBP1 protein (native form, 460) correlated significantly with poor survival ( p = 0.007). The lack of SBP1 expression was not due to gene deletion. Treatment of A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells with the methylation inhibitor 5-azacytidine did not affect expression of the SBP1 protein. Analysis of the tumour proliferation status using Ki-67 suggests that down-regulated expression of SBP1 may reflect increased cell proliferation and decreased differentiation in lung adenocarcinomas.     Measurement of Low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in the human environment

    In recent years there has been an increase in development of electromagnetic (EM) technology in the telecommunication industry, resulting in an increase in human non-ionizing exposure. This fact has initiated a number of scientific studies on possible health effects of EM fields on human organism. Totally four representative microenvironments were investigated for RF EM fields distribution, namely: city center, residential area, rural area, and extra-village area. Each microenvironment was measured 20 times in accordance with the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines. The extra-village measurements were taken as the base values that reflect the E-field intensities with the lowest amplitudes. The statistical analysis revealed notable statistical significance (p < 0.001) in almost all measured frequency bands except the Wi-Fi where the p-values were less than 0.05 for the city center and residential area but not significant for rural area. The highest total E-field intensity was measured in the residential area (approximately 1.85 V/m). All measured values were below the legal limits of the Slovak Republic and ICNIRP safety guidelines. However, the ICNIRP safety limits were written in 1998 considering only the thermal effects of RF radiation. They were updated in 2009 without any changes in the limits and still recommend 27.5 – 61 V/m (2 – 10 W/m2) for the RF frequency band of 400–2,000 MHz. The BioInitiative Report of 2012 established the scientific benchmark for possible health risks as 30–60 μW/m2 (approximately 0.1 – 0.15 V/m). Thus, all measured values were above the scientifically derived limits
