    WordSim353-cs: Evaluation Dataset for Lexical Similarity and Relatedness, based on WordSim353

    Czech translation of WordSim353. The Czech translation of English WordSim353 word pairs were obtained from four translators. All translation variants were scored according to the lexical similarity/relatedness annotation instructions for WordSim353 annotators, by 25 Czech annotators. The resulting data set consists of two annotation files: "WordSim353-cs.csv" and "WordSim-cs-Multi.csv". Both files are encoded in UTF-8, have a header, text is enclosed in double quotes, and columns are separated by commas. The rows are numbered. The WordSim-cs-Multi data set has rows numbered from 1 to 634, whereas the row indices in the WordSim353-cs data set reflect the corresponding row numbers in the WordSim-cs-Multi data set. The WordSim353-cs file contains a one-to-one mapping selection of 353 Czech equivalent pairs whose judgments have proven to be most similar to the judgments of their corresponding English originals (compared by the absolute value of the difference between the means over all annotators in each language counterpart). In one case ("psychology-cognition"), two Czech equivalent pairs had identical means as well as confidence intervals, so we randomly selected one. The "WordSim-cs-Multi.csv" file contains human judgments for all translation variants. In both data sets, we preserved all 25 individual scores. In the WordSim353-cs data set, we added a column with their Czech means as well as a column containing the original English means and 95% confidence intervals in separate columns for each mean (computed by the CI function in the Rmisc R package). The WordSim-cs-Multi data set contains only the Czech means and confidence intervals. For the most convenient lexical search, we provided separate columns with the respective Czech and English single words, entire word pairs, and eventually an English-Czech quadruple in both data sets. The data set also contains an xls table with the four translations and a preliminary selection of the best variants performed by an adjudicator

    Experiences of stigma, discrimination and violence and their impact on the mental health of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Abstract Health care workers have been exposed to COVID-19 more than people in other professions, which may have led to stigmatization, discrimination, and violence toward them, possibly impacting their mental health. We investigated (1) factors associated with stigma, discrimination, and violence, (2) the association of stigma, discrimination, and violence with mental health, (3) everyday experiences of stigmatization, discrimination, and violence. We chose a combination of a quantitative approach and qualitative content analysis to analyze data collected at three time points: in 2020, 2021 and 2022. A higher age was associated with lower odds of experiencing stigma, discrimination, and violence, whereas female gender was related to more negative experiences. The intensity of exposure to COVID-19 was associated with greater experience with stigmatization, discrimination, and violence across all three years (for example in 2022: odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 1.74, 1.18–2.55 for mild exposure; 2.82, 1.95–4.09 for moderate exposure; and 5.74, 3.55–9.26 for severe exposure, when compared to no exposure). Stigma, discrimination, and violence were most strongly associated with psychological distress in 2020 (odds ratio = 2.97, 95% confidence interval 2.27–3.88) and with depressive symptoms in 2021 (odds ratio = 2.78, 95% confidence interval 2.12–3.64). Attention should be given to the destigmatization of contagious diseases and the prevention of discrimination, violence, and mental health problems, both within workplaces and among the public

    Depression in healthcare workers during COVID-19 pandemic:results from Czech arm of HEROES Study

    The pandemic due to COVID-19 brought new risks for depression of health care workers, which may have differently influenced men and women. We aimed to investigate (1) whether health care workers in Czechia experienced an increase in depression during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) which factors contributed the most to this change, and (3) whether the magnitude of the associations differed by gender. We studied 2564 participants of the Czech arm of the international COVID-19 HEalth caRe wOrkErS (HEROES) Study. Online questionnaire was administered to health care workers in summer 2020 (wave 0) and spring 2021 (wave 1). Depression was defined by reaching 10 or more points on the Patient Health Questionnaire. Logistic regression investigated the association of participant´s characteristics with depression and multivariable decomposition for non-linear models assessed, to what extent the characteristic explained the change in depression occurrence. The prevalence of depression increased twice during the pandemic (11% in wave 0 and 22% in wave 1). Stress accounted for 50% of the difference, experience of death due to COVID-19 for 15% and contact with COVID-19 patients for 14%. Greater resilience and sufficient personal protective equipment were strongly associated with lower occurrence of depression. The protective association of resilience with depression was stronger in men than in women. We conclude that interventions to promote mental health of health care workers in future health crisis should aim at decreasing stress and enhancing resilience. They should be delivered especially to individuals who have contact with the affected patients and may face their death.</p

    Anti-stigma training and positive changes in mental illness stigma outcomes in medical students in ten countries: a mediation analysis on pathways via empathy development and anxiety reduction

    Purpose: Studies of mental illness stigma reduction interventions have been criticised for failing to evaluate behavioural outcomes and mechanisms of action. This project evaluates training for medical students entitled 'Responding to Experienced and Anticipated Discrimination' (READ), developed to focus on skills in addition to attitudes and knowledge. We aimed to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of READ with respect to knowledge, attitudes, and clinical communication skills in responding to mental illness-related discrimination, and (ii) investigate whether its potential effectiveness was mediated via empathy or/and intergroup anxiety. Methods: This is an international multisite non-randomised pre- vs post-controlled study. Eligible medical students were currently undertaking their rotational training in psychiatry. Thirteen sites across ten countries (n = 570) were included in the final analysis. Results: READ was associated with positive changes in knowledge (mean difference 1.35; 95% CI 0.87 to 1.82), attitudes (mean difference -&nbsp;2.50; 95% CI -&nbsp;3.54 to -&nbsp;1.46), skills (odds ratio 2.98; 95% CI 1.90 to 4.67), and simulated patient perceived empathy (mean difference 3.05; 95% CI 1.90 to 4.21). The associations of READ with knowledge, attitudes, and communication skills but not with simulated patient perceived empathy were partly mediated through student reported empathy and intergroup anxiety. Conclusion: This is the first study to identify mediating effects of reduced intergroup anxiety and increased empathy in an evaluation of anti-stigma training that includes behavioural measures in the form of communication skills and perceived empathy. It shows the importance of both mediators for all of knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and hence of targeting both in future interventions
