The clash of the arts, architecture and the city of the 19th Century in José Mariano Filho

The objective of this research is the study of textual works and serials by José Marianno Carneiro da Cunha Filho, between 1921 and 1945. It seeks to understand its importance as a critic of the arts, architecture and urbanism in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Through the works of José Marianno intended to establish a dialogue with the authors of the time, which addressed the issue in order to verify the technical-political vocabulary of José Marianno Filho and elucidate the clash between the neocolonial and modernism, as well as to list their relevance within the historiography of Brazilian architecture, and rank their relevance within the historiography of Brazilian architecture. The research was based on the meeting of publications of José Marianno Filho in the mentioned period, published serially in the press and publishers of the period. More specifically, the survey drew on existing in the Library Paulo Santos, a member of the MinC-IPHAN System in Rio de Janeiro. There, through large albums with many articles, hoarded by the architect and historian Paulo Santos it was possible to obtain a comprehensive overview of the writings of José Marianno Filho. Thus, we performed a careful reading of the material assembled by bringing the production of a text and a timeline extended on three areas of research: the city, architecture and arts of the 19th century.O objetivo da pesquisa é o estudo das obras textuais e das publicações seriadas de autoria de José Marianno Carneiro da Cunha Filho, entre 1921 e 1945. Procura-se compreender sua importância como crítico das artes, de arquitetura e de urbanismo do Rio de Janeiro no século XIX e início do século XX. Através das obras de José Marianno pretende-se estabelecer um diálogo com os demais autores da época, que abordaram o assunto, a fim de verificar o vocabulário técnico-político de José Marianno e elucidar o embate existente entre o neocolonial e o modernismo, bem como elencar sua relevância dentro da Historiografia da Arquitetura Brasileira. A pesquisa pautou-se na reunião das publicações de José Marianno Filho, no período citado, publicadas na imprensa seriada e por editoras do período. Mais especificamente, a pesquisa valeu-se do material existente na Biblioteca Paulo Santos, integrante do Sistema MinC-IPHAN, no Rio de Janeiro. Ali, por meio de grandes álbuns com “clipagens”, amealhados pelo arquiteto e historiador Paulo Santos, foi possível obter um extenso panorama dos escritos de José Marianno Filho. Destarte, foi realizada uma leitura cuidada do material reunido intentando a produção de um texto e de uma cronologia estendida sobre os três focos da pesquisa: a cidade, a arquitetura e as artes do século XIX
