    Synthesis and Characterizations of Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)- b

    A series of poly(trimethylene terephthalate)-b-poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTT-PTMEG) copolymers were synthesized by two-step melt-polycondensation. The copolymers were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, rheometer, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and mechanical properties. The results suggest that by increasing the flexible PTMEG contents from 0% to 60 wt%, the copolymers show decreased glass transition temperatures, melting points, melt-crystallization temperatures, hardness, tensile strength, thermostability, and smaller spherulites dimensions; however it has much increased impact strength and elongation at breaking point. Compared with commercial poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)-type TPEE with 25 mol% flexible segments, PTT-type TPEE having 25 mol% flexible segments has a lower glass transition temperature, melting point, crystallization temperature, and much lower tensile strength although it has a much higher impact strength than that of PBT-type TPEE, and it is not suitably used as a commercial TPEE

    Clinical characteristics and acute complication of COVID-19 patients with diabetes: a multicenter, retrospective study in Southern China

    AimsThis study aims to describe the clinical characteristics, laboratory data and complications of hospitalized COVID-19 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) since epidemic prevention and control optimization was adjusted in December 2022 in China.MethodsThis retrospective multicenter study included 298 patients with confirmed type 2 diabetes mellitus with or without COVID-19. We collected data from the first wave of the pandemic in The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Loudi Central Hospital and The First People’s Hospital of Xiangtan from December 1, 2022 to February 1, 2023. We extracted baseline data, clinical symptoms, acute complications, laboratory findings, treatment and outcome data of each patient from electronic medical records.ResultsFor among 298 hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes, 136 (45.6%) were COVID-19 uninfected, and 162 (54.4%) were COVID-19 infected. We found that the incidence of cough, fatigue, fever, muscle soreness, sore throat, shortness of breath, hyposmia, hypogeusia and polyphagia (all p<0.01) were significantly higher in the exposure group. They showed higher levels of ketone (p=0.04), creatinine (p<0.01), blood potassium (p=0.01) and more diabetic ketoacidosis (p<0.01). Patients with COVID-19 less use of metformin (p<0.01), thiazolidinediones (p<0.01) and SGLT2 (p<0.01) compared with patients without COVID-19.ConclusionCOVID-19 patients with diabetes showed more severe respiratory and constitutional symptoms and an increased proportion of hyposmia and hypogeusia. Moreover, COVID-19 patients with diabetes have a higher incidence of acute complications, are more prone to worsening renal function, and are more cautious about the use of antidiabetic drugs

    Management of granulomatous lobular mastitis: an international multidisciplinary consensus (2021 edition)

    Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a rare and chronic benign inflammatory disease of the breast. Difficulties exist in the management of GLM for many front-line surgeons and medical specialists who care for patients with inflammatory disorders of the breast. This consensus is summarized to establish evidence-based recommendations for the management of GLM. Literature was reviewed using PubMed from January 1, 1971 to July 31, 2020. Sixty-six international experienced multidisciplinary experts from 11 countries or regions were invited to review the evidence. Levels of evidence were determined using the American College of Physicians grading system, and recommendations were discussed until consensus. Experts discussed and concluded 30 recommendations on historical definitions, etiology and predisposing factors, diagnosis criteria, treatment, clinical stages, relapse and recurrence of GLM. GLM was recommended as a widely accepted definition. In addition, this consensus introduced a new clinical stages and management algorithm for GLM to provide individual treatment strategies. In conclusion, diagnosis of GLM depends on a combination of history, clinical manifestations, imaging examinations, laboratory examinations and pathology. The approach to treatment of GLM should be applied according to the different clinical stage of GLM. This evidence-based consensus would be valuable to assist front-line surgeons and medical specialists in the optimal management of GLM.Improving the Ability of Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult Disease

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    AIM:To analyze retinal reattachment rate and the incidence of high intraocular pressure vitreous surgery combined with silicone oil or C<sub>3</sub>F<sub>8</sub> tamponade for patients with macular hole retinal detachment(MHRD)in pathologic high myopic eyes. And to provide clinical reference of such surgery in the choice of filler. <p>METHODS:A retrospective case-controlled study was designed. Continuous observation of the patients with high myopia MHRD at different periods was carried out. These patients who underwent vitrectomy with silicone oil or C<sub>3</sub>F<sub>8</sub> intraocular tamponade were retrospectively analyzed in 1wk and 1, 3, 6, 12mo after surgery. The rate of retinal reattachment and the incidence of high intraocular pressure were analyzed between two groups, in order to obtain the best way to fill.<p>RSULTS:There was no statistically significant difference in the rate of retinal reattachment between silicone oil group and C<sub>3</sub>F<sub>8</sub> tamponade group after initial surgery although silicone oil group was higher than C<sub>3</sub>F<sub>8</sub> tamponade group in the rate of retinal reattachment. Silicone oil group was higher than C<sub>3</sub>F<sub>8</sub> tamponade group of the incidence about high intraocular pressure after vitreous surgery. But there was no statistically significant difference in both groups.<p>CONCLUSION: We should take individual programs which filler were used after vitrectomy for patient with MHRD in high myopic eyes
