    Implications of the Little Higgs Dark Matter and T-odd Fermions

    We study the phenomenology of dark matter in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity after the discovery of Higgs boson. We analyze the relic abundance of dark matter, focusing on the effects of coannihilaitons with T-odd fermions. After determining the parameter space that predicts the correct relic abundance measured by WMAP and Planck collaborations, we evaluate the elastic scattering cross section between dark matter and nucleon. In comparison with experimental results, we find that the lower mass of dark matter is constrained mildly by LUX 2013 while the future XENON experiment has potential to explore most of the parameter space for both T-odd lepton and T-odd quark coannihilation scenarios. We also study the collider signatures of T-odd fermion pair production at the LHC. Even though the production cross sections are large, it turns out very challenging to search for these T-odd fermions directly at the collider because the visible charged leptons or jets are very soft. Furthermore, we show that, with an extra hard jet radiated out from the initial state, the T-odd quark pair production can contribute significantly to mono-jet plus missing energy search at the LHC

    Many teachers of international students in the United States are challenged to address cultural differences in a classroom. International students often experience psychological, physical and cultural stress when they study abroad, due mainly to unfamiliar environments and a diverse culture. The question this study asks is: Are there any strategies that can be used to benefit these students? This grounded theory study will examine a purposefully-selected group of subjects from China and Taiwan who are currently studying at a large metropolitan university in the Southeastern United States. After data collection and analysis procedure, I hoped there are some things valued for international student who just arrived at the new environment and provides the reference to those students and college with the similar situation as UCF all over the world

    Design of cross-coupled CMAC for contour-following – a reinforcement-based ILC approach

    One of the most popular applications of a bi-axial motion stage is precision motion control. The reduction of tracking error and contour error is one of the most coveted goals in precision motion control systems. The accuracy of a motion control system is often affected by external disturbances. In addition, system non-linearity such as friction also represents a major hurdle to motion precision. In order to deal with the aforementioned problem, this paper proposes a fuzzy logic-based Reinforcement Iterative Learning Control (RILC) and a Cross-Coupled Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller (CCCMAC). In particular, the proposed fuzzy logicbased RILC and a LuGre friction model-based compensation approach are exploited to improve motion accuracy. The fuzzy logic-based RILC aims at reducing tracking error and compensating for external disturbance, while the LuGre friction model is responsible for friction compensation. In addition, the CCCMAC consisting of a cerebellar model articulation controller and a cross-coupled controller aims at reducing contour error and dealing with the problem of dynamics mismatch between different axes. Performance comparisons between the proposed fuzzy logic-based Reinforcement Iterative Learning Cross-Coupled Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller (RIL–CCCMAC) and several existing control schemes are conducted on a bi-axial motion stage.     Common-mode noise reduction schemes for weakly coupled differential serpentine delay microstrip lines

    This paper proposes design schemes to reduce the common mode noise from weakly coupled differential serpentine delay microstrip lines (DSDMLs). The proposed approach is twofold: we leverage strongly coupled vertical-turn-coupled traces (VTCTs) instead of weakly coupled VTCTs (conventional pattern) and add guard traces. Time- and frequency-domain analyses of the proposed schemes for reducing the common-mode noise are performed by studying the transmission waveform and the differential-to-common mode conversion using the circuit solver HSPICE and the 3-D full-wave simulator HFSS, respectively. Compared to the conventional design of the weakly coupled DSDMLs, the proposed solutions yield a reduction of about 54% of the peak-to-peak amplitude of the common-mode noise, while the differential impedance remains matched along the complete length of the DSDML. Moreover, the range of frequencies, over which the magnitude of the differential-to-common mode conversion is now significantly reduced, is very wide, i.e. about 0.3-10 GHz. Furthermore, the differential insertion and reflection loss introduced by the newly proposed designs are almost the same as the ones achieved by using the conventional design. Finally, a favorable comparison between simulated and measured results confirms the excellent common-mode noise reduction performance of the proposed schemes

    Agricultural Sector Input Technical Coefficients, Demand Changes and CO2 Emissions after the Financial Crisis: Environmental Input-Output Growth Factor Model Approach

    The agricultural sector has been declining year by year with the proportion of economic growth and GDP. The financial crisis in 2007 caused huge losses in the world's economies. Taiwan cannot avoid economic damage. In the future, the way from agriculture to production needs to be transformed. This study uses the Environmental Input-Output Growth Factor model to estimate the changes in CO2 emissions in the agricultural sector before and after the financial crisis, and summarizes the changing factors to observe the development characteristics of the agricultural sector. The results show that there are differences in the influencing factors before and after the financial crisis. The biggest influencing factors are “domestic final demand” and “production input technical coefficients”.     Teaching topographic map skills and geomorphology concepts with Google Earth in a one-computer classroom

    Teaching high-school geomorphological concepts and topographic map reading entails many challenges. This research reports the applicability and effectiveness of Google Earth in teaching topographic map skills and geomorphological concepts, by a single teacher, in a one-computer classroom. Compared to learning via a conventional instructional method, students learning with Google Earth do not have different geomorphological concepts development because both settings enable students to learn with similar static representation. However, students learning with Google Earth improve topographic map skills significantly compared to the conventional instructional method. This is because of the 3D landscape visualization and prior knowledge connections available with Google Earth

    Potential Osteoporosis Recovery by Deep Sea Water through Bone Regeneration in SAMP8 Mice

    The aim of this study is to examine the therapeutic potential of deep sea water (DSW) on osteoporosis. Previously, we have established the ovariectomized senescence-accelerated mice (OVX-SAMP8) and demonstrated strong recovery of osteoporosis by stem cell and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Deep sea water at hardness (HD) 1000 showed significant increase in proliferation of osteoblastic cell (MC3T3) by MTT assay. For in vivo animal study, bone mineral density (BMD) was strongly enhanced followed by the significantly increased trabecular numbers through micro-CT examination after a 4-month deep sea water treatment, and biochemistry analysis showed that serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was decreased. For stage-specific osteogenesis, bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) were harvested and examined. Deep sea water-treated BMSCs showed stronger osteogenic differentiation such as BMP2, RUNX2, OPN, and OCN, and enhanced colony forming abilities, compared to the control group. Interestingly, most untreated OVX-SAMP8 mice died around 10 months; however, approximately 57% of DSW-treated groups lived up to 16.6 months, a life expectancy similar to the previously reported life expectancy for SAMR1 24 months. The results demonstrated the regenerative potentials of deep sea water on osteogenesis, showing that deep sea water could potentially be applied in osteoporosis therapy as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Organotin compounds (OTCs) have been widely used as stabilizers in the production of plastic, agricultural pesticides, antifoulant plaints and wood preservation. The toxicity of triphenyltin (TPT) compounds was known for their embryotoxic, neurotoxic, genotoxic and immunotoxic effects in mammals. The carcinogenicity of TPT was not well understood and few studies had discussed the effects of OTCs on gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) of cells.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>In the present study, the effects of triphenyltin chloride (TPTC) on GJIC in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells were evaluated, using the scrape-loading dye transfer technique.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>TPTC inhibited GJIC after a 30-min exposure in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Pre-incubation of cells with the protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor did not modify the response, but the specific MEK 1 inhibitor PD98059 and PI3K inhibitor LY294002 decreased substantially the inhibition of GJIC by TPTC. After WB-F344 cells were exposed to TPTC, phosphorylation of Cx43 increased as seen in Western blot analysis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results show that TPTC inhibits GJIC in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells by altering the Cx43 protein expression through both MAPK and PI3-kinase pathways.</p
