    Public Participation in the Revitalization of Kütahya's CBD in Turkey

    Abstract Kütahya has been the crade of many cultures throughout the history. Especially, its population grew after Turkish occupation and the city expanded beyond the walls of the city. Traditional life characteristics and tradational production stiles survived till how such as ceramics, textile, leather, carpets and handcrafts. Thus, Centre Business District (CBD) continue to preservative the business vitality together with religious, social and civil architecture examples and its conservative people. So, if the preservation aims the participation of public (owners/users), the social pattern of the area becomes so important in the process. With determining the relation between the social and physical attitudes towards the preservation of the area, suitable solution can be formed which fits with the situation. A social survey was conducted to the offices. The results of the survey related with ownership patterns, the functions, the employee and customers of the shop, the consciousness and tendencies to repair activities. Thus, the results of the study can be useful for policy makers, urban planners and inverts.

    Planning and Protecting Historical Buildings in Kaleiçi Region of Edirne/Turkey

    Over a long history, the city of Edirne has been developing as an important settlement centre due to its geopolitical location. The importance of Edirne increased especially after it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and served as the capital city of the Ottoman Empire for a long period of time. It is city of a peculiar character and identy with its many monuments and samples of civil architecture. Kaleiçi, as the first settlement nucleus of Edirne, has still many historic houses which could manage to survive, reflecting the social and cultural life of the city around the end of 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. The dwellings those reached up to the present in Kaleiçi neigborhood, which can be considered as the center of settlement in Edirne, are very few in number. The conditions that expedited the deformed look of present Edirne are as follows: the regulations which led way to the new reconstruction after the earthquakes and fires, the illegal practises in the area, the dense commerce in Saraçlar Avenue, in turn, the deterioration of the characteristics of the plan and facade of the area and problems resuled from changes in the dwelling owners. Following a brief history of Edirne Kaleiçi, the objectives of this study are to determine and classify the characteristic of the plansand facades of traditional dwellings and to develop suggestions for the preservation of these houses and the spatial qualities of whole fabric of the area.

    Doktora TeziTezin amacı; kuramsal alt yapı ışığında seçilen yöntemler ile mimarlık eğitimi sürecinde bireyin algı değişiminin ölçülmesi ve elde edilen bulguların mimarlık eğitimi için strateji önerilerine katkıda bulunmasıdır. Tez çalışması; çalışmanın amacının, kapsamının ve yönteminin açıklandığı giriş bölümü ile birlikte beş bölümden oluşmaktadır. İkinci Bölümde; Algının Mimarlık Eğitimindeki Önemi başlığı altında kuramsal alt yapı oluşturulmuştur. Bu bölümde; algının tanımı, türleri, teorileri verilmiş, ayrıca mimarlıkta algı alt bölümünde Algı ile Mimarlık Eğitimi ilişkisi kurulmuştur. Üçüncü bölümde; Mimarlık Eğitimi başlığı altında, mimarlık eğitiminin tarihsel gelişimi ve mimarlık eğitiminde hedefler ile uluslar arası yaklaşımlar incelenmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde; Mimarlık Eğitimi Sürecinde Bireyin Algı Değişiminin Görsel Çevre Değerlendirme Teknikleri ile İncelenmesi başlığı altında, tezin amaç ve hedefleri doğrultusunda geliştirilen hipotezlerin sınanması için literatürdeki teknikler incelenerek, tezin amacına en uygun teknik seçilmiş(Anlamsal Farklılaşma ve Anlamsal Sıralama) ve anket çalışması uygulanmıştır. Anket çalışması 2008?2009 yılı Trakya Üniversitesi Mimarlık Bölümü öğrencilerine(227 öğrenci) uygulanmıştır. Bölüm sonunda anket sonuçlarının analizleri ve değerlendirmeleri yapılmıştır. Beşinci bölümde ise tez çalışmasının sonuçları değerlendirilmiş ve mimarlık eğitimi için strateji önerileri sıralanmıştır.AbstractThe purpose of this thesis is to measure the transformation of individuals perception throughout the education of architecture and to contribute to the strategies of architectural education. The study consists of five chapters including the introductory part which elaborates the content and the method of the research. The second chapter, which is titled as `The Importance of Perception in the Education of Architecture? explains the theoretical framework of the study. This chapter elaborates the definition, types and theories of perception. In addition, the relationship between architectural education and perception is discussed a subsection. The third chapter, which is titled as `Education of Architecture, focuses on the history and purpose of the architectural education, and international approaches to the subject. The fourth chapter, which is titled as `Investigation of the Transformation of the Perception of Individuals throughout Architectural Education on the Basis of Visual Environment Evaluation Techniques?, explains which technique was most appropriate for the purpose of the research (Semantic Differential(SD) and Semantic Rating Scale (SRS) )from the wide literature on the subject and the survey was described. The survey was conducted on 227 students from the Department of Architecture at Trakya University in 2008-2009 education period. The result of the survey was analyzed and evaluated at the end of the chapter. The results of the thesis were discussed and the propositions about strategies fort he education of architecture are listed at the fifth chapter
