    Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals Membership Survey: Results and Implications

    A survey of the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professional (ANREP) members indicated two primary reasons for joining: the need to belong to a professional Extension association focusing on natural resources and the opportunity to network with other professionals in this issue area. Three issues members wanted addressed were: training and professional development opportunities, identification of national natural resource issues and strategies to address them, and interstate collaboration. Most respondents were satisfied with what ANREP had done since they became members. Other Extension organizations could adopt this survey methodology as a means to involve their members in their strategic planning process

Indigenous wisdom is their life-giving gift to communities everywhere for planetary futures. It is precious, having integrity and an ethic of responsibility and care. Indigenous wisdom as environmental education is the oldest education, being tens of thousands of years of continuity before waves of apocalyptic colonial violence during the last few centuries interrupted lifeways and language-embedded knowledge systems, some forever gone . .

    In a Kimberley place-based cultural story, Dangaba is a woman whose Country holds poison gas. Her story shows the importance of cultural ways of understanding and caring for Country, especially hazardous places. The authors contrast this with a corporate story of fossil fuel, illustrating the divergent discourses and approaches to place. Indigenous and local peoples and their knowledge, cultures, laws, philosophies and practices are vitally important to Indigenous lifeways and livelihoods, and critically significant to the long-term health and well-being of people and place in our locality, region and world. We call for storying and narratives from the pluriverse of sociocultural voices to be a meaningful part of environmental education and to be implemented in multiple places of learning. To know how to hear, understand and apply the learnings from place-based story is to know how to move beyond a normalised worldview of separation, alienation, individualism, infinite growth, consumption, extraction, commodification and craving. To know how to see, feel, describe and reflect upon experience, concepts and practice is to find ways to move towards radical generosity, mutuality of becoming, embodied kinship, wisdom, humility and respect

    Hand Shape Representations in the Human Posterior Parietal Cortex

    Humans shape their hands to grasp, manipulate objects, and to communicate. From nonhuman primate studies, we know that visual and motor properties for grasps can be derived from cells in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Are non-grasp-related hand shapes in humans represented similarly? Here we show for the first time how single neurons in the PPC of humans are selective for particular imagined hand shapes independent of graspable objects. We find that motor imagery to shape the hand can be successfully decoded from the PPC by implementing a version of the popular Rock-Paper-Scissors game and its extension Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock. By simultaneous presentation of visual and auditory cues, we can discriminate motor imagery from visual information and show differences in auditory and visual information processing in the PPC. These results also demonstrate that neural signals from human PPC can be used to drive a dexterous cortical neuroprosthesis

    Decoding Motor Imagery from the Posterior Parietal Cortex of a Tetraplegic Human

    Nonhuman primate and human studies have suggested that populations of neurons in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) may represent high-level aspects of action planning that can be used to control external devices as part of a brain-machine interface. However, there is no direct neuron-recording evidence that human PPC is involved in action planning, and the suitability of these signals for neuroprosthetic control has not been tested.We recorded neural population activity with arrays of microelectrodes implanted in the PPC of a tetraplegic subject. Motor imagery could be decoded from these neural populations, including imagined goals, trajectories, and types of movement.These findings indicate that the PPC of humans represents high-level, cognitive aspects of action and that the PPC can be a rich source for cognitive control signals for neural prosthetics that assist paralyzed patients

    Self-Sufficient Community Lands Act

    The Self-Sufficient Communities Lands Act is a bill that has been proposed to generate dependable economic activity for counties and local governments through sustainable forest management. If passed, revenue from the bill will replace the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act in its essential function of channeling funding to rural schools in Idaho. Therefore, the passing of this bill has a large impact on the people living in these communities. The timber industry in Idaho provides a lot of revenue, but many factors come into play when these forests become managed by the local communities. The factors that determine whether a community forest can be successful or fail by looking at other community forests have been identified. In considering these factors, we feel that at this time there is not enough clear evidence that it should be passed or that it would be successful. More research needs to be done on the challenges and benefits of implementing a program that includes local natural resources, private firms and community oversight

    Endoscopic endonasal repair of encephaloceles of the lateral sphenoid sinus: multiinstitution confirmation of a new classification.

    OBJECTIVE: Encephaloceles of the lateral sphenoid sinus are rare. Originally believed to be due to defects in a patent lateral craniopharyngeal canal (Sternberg canal), they are now thought to originate more commonly from idiopathic intracranial hypertension, not unlike encephaloceles elsewhere in the skull base. A new classification of these encephaloceles was recently introduced, which divided them in relation to the foramen rotundum. Whether this classification can be applied to a larger cohort from multiple institutions and whether it might be useful in predicting outcome is unknown. Thus, the authors\u27 goal was to divide a multiinstitutional cohort of patients with lateral sphenoid encephaloceles into four subtypes to determine their incidence and any correlation with surgical outcome. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective review of prospectively acquired databases was carried out across three institutions. Cases were categorized into one of four subtypes (type I, Sternberg canal; type II, medial to rotundum; type III, lateral to rotundum; and type IV, both medial and lateral with rotundum enlargement). Demographic and outcome metrics were collected. Kaplan-Meyer curves were used to determine the rate of recurrence after surgical repair. RESULTS: A total of 49 patients (71% female) were included. The average BMI was 32.8. All encephaloceles fell within the classification scheme. Type III was the most common (71.4%), followed by type IV (16.3%), type II (10.2%), and type I (2%). Cases were repaired endonasally, via a transpterygoidal approach. Lumbar drains were placed in 78% of cases. A variety of materials was used for closure, with a nasoseptal flap used in 65%. After a mean follow-up of 47 months, there were 4 (8%) CSF leak recurrences, all in patients with type III or type IV leaks and all within 1 year of the first repair. Two leaks were fixed with ventriculoperitoneal shunt and reoperation, 1 with ventriculoperitoneal shunt only, and 1 with a lumbar drain only. Of 45 patients in whom detailed information was available, there were 12 (26.7%) with postoperative dry eye or facial numbness, with facial numbness occurring in type III or type IV defects only. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic endonasal repair of lateral sphenoid wing encephaloceles is highly successful, but repair may lead to dry eye or facial numbness. True Sternberg (type I) leaks were uncommon. Failures and facial numbness occurred only in patients with type III and type IV leaks
