    Circuit Structure and Control Method to Reduce Size and Harmonic Distortion of Interleaved Dual Buck Inverter

    A new circuit structure and control method for a high power interleaved dual-buck inverter are proposed. The proposed inverter consists of six switches, four diodes and two inductors, uses a dual-buck structure to eliminate zero-cross distortion, and operates in an interleaved mode to reduce the current stress of switch. To reduce the total harmonic distortion at low output power, the inverter is controlled using discontinuous-current-mode control combined with continuous-current-mode control. The experimental inverter had a power-conversion efficiency of 98.5% at output power = 1300 W and 98.3% at output power = 2 kW, when the inverter was operated at an input voltage of 400 V-DC, output voltage of 220 V-AC/60 Hz, and switching frequency of 20 kHz.     Metal work-function-dependent barrier height of Ni contacts with metal-embedded nanoparticles to 4H-SiC

    Metal, typically gold [Au], nanoparticles [NPs] embedded in a capping metal contact layer onto silicon carbide [SiC] are considered to have practical applications in changing the barrier height of the original contacts. Here, we demonstrate the use of silver [Ag] NPs to effectively lower the barrier height of the electrical contacts to 4H-SiC. It has been shown that the barrier height of the fabricated SiC diode structures (Ni with embedded Ag-NPs) has significantly reduced by 0.11 eV and 0.18 eV with respect to the samples with Au-NPs and the reference samples, respectively. The experimental results have also been compared with both an analytic model based on Tung's theory and physics-based two-dimensional numerical simulations

    A Multiple Mobility Support Approach (MMSA) Based on PEAS for NCW in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) can be implemented as one of sensor systems in Network Centric Warfare (NCW). Mobility support and energy efficiency are key concerns for this application, due to multiple mobile users and stimuli in real combat field. However, mobility support approaches that can be adopted in this circumstance are rare. This paper proposes Multiple Mobility Support Approach (MMSA) based on Probing Environment and Adaptive Sleeping (PEAS) to support the simultaneous mobility of both multiple users and stimuli by sharing the information of stimuli in WSNs. Simulations using Qualnet are conducted, showing that MMSA can support multiple mobile users and stimuli with good energy efficiency.     Anti-reflective nano- and micro-structures on 4H-SiC for photodiodes

    In this study, nano-scale honeycomb-shaped structures with anti-reflection properties were successfully formed on SiC. The surface of 4H-SiC wafer after a conventional photolithography process was etched by inductively coupled plasma. We demonstrate that the reflection characteristic of the fabricated photodiodes has significantly reduced by 55% compared with the reference devices. As a result, the optical response Iillumination/Idark of the 4H-SiC photodiodes were enhanced up to 178%, which can be ascribed primarily to the improved light trapping in the proposed nano-scale texturing

    A generalized sub-pixel mapping algorithm for auto-stereoscopic displays using slanted optical plates

    Auto-stereoscopic displays using slanted optical plates have inherent subpixel rasterization compared to the normal 2D displays, and mappings between subpixel positions and multi-view indices even vary according to the number of views and angles of slanted optical plates. In this paper, we derive a simple but generalized formula for subpixel mappings from a naïve ray-tracing technique on RGB stripe type panels. To verify the proposed algorithm, our proto-type auto-stereoscopic display using parallax barriers with a slanted angle was used and examined in the experiment.     Systemic chemotherapy for treatment of advanced small bowel adenocarcinoma with prognostic factor analysis: retrospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We sought to evaluate prognostic factors affecting overall survival (OS), and to investigate the role of palliative chemotherapy using propensity score-based weighting, in patients with advanced small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data from a total of 91 patients diagnosed with advanced SBA at the Asan Medical Center between January 1989 and December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were split into two groups, those who did and did not receive palliative chemotherapy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Overall, 81 patients (89.0%) died, at a median survival time of 6.6 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.5 - 7.5 months). The 40 patients receiving chemotherapy showed overall response and disease control rates of 11.1% and 37.0%, respectively, with OS and progression-free survival (PFS) of 11.8 months (95% CI, 4.6 - 19.0 months) and 5.7 months (95% CI, 3.5 - 8.0 months), respectively. The 41 patients who did not receive chemotherapy had an OS of 4.1 months (95% CI, 3.1 - 5.1 months) and a PFS of 1.3 months (95% CI, 0.8 - 1.7 months). Multivariate analysis showed that lack of tumor resection, non-prescription of chemotherapy, liver metastasis, and intra-abdominal lymph node metastasis, were all independently associated with poor survival outcomes. After inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) adjustment, the group that did not receive chemotherapy was at a significantly higher risk of mortality (HR 3.44, 95% CI 2.03 - 5.83, p < 0.001) than were patients receiving chemotherapy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Palliative chemotherapy may improve survival outcomes in patients with advanced SBA.</p

    Microspinning: Local Surface Mixing via Rotation of Magnetic Microparticles for Efficient Small-Volume Bioassays

    The need for high-throughput screening has led to the miniaturization of the reaction volume of the chamber in bioassays. As the reactor gets smaller, surface tension dominates the gravitational or inertial force, and mixing efficiency decreases in small-scale reactions. Because passive mixing by simple diffusion in tens of microliter-scale volumes takes a long time, active mixing is needed. Here, we report an efficient micromixing method using magnetically rotating microparticles with patterned magnetization induced by magnetic nanoparticle chains. Because the microparticles have magnetization patterning due to fabrication with magnetic nanoparticle chains, the microparticles can rotate along the external rotating magnetic field, causing micromixing. We validated the reaction efficiency by comparing this micromixing method with other mixing methods such as simple diffusion and the use of a rocking shaker at various working volumes. This method has the potential to be widely utilized in suspension assay technology as an efficient mixing strategy

    Application of Magneto-Rheological Fluids for Investigating the Effect of Skin Properties on Arterial Tonometry Measurements

    Accurate, non-invasive measurements of blood pressure and its continuous monitoring are extremely important for personal health care. Arterial tonometry, a method that is used to provide a detailed image of a patient's cardiovascular health, shows promise for being a non-invasive alternative to current blood pressure measurement methods. However, its measurement accuracy is sensitive to patient variations such as the stiffness of the skin. Thus, this project intends to investigate the effect of skin properties (i.e., stiffness) on the accuracy of tonometric blood pressure measurements. To this end, a test platform, consisting of a pulsatile system and a tunable skin stiffness apparatus (or MR apparatus), is constructed. The cam-follower pulsatile system built based on in vivo testing of human pulses is used to generate realistic pulse waveforms. The MR apparatus is able to adjust its stiffness using Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid whose apparent viscosity changes with applied magnetic fields. Placed at the surface of the MR apparatus, a cylinder with a frictionless plunger simulates a variable applanation force or “hold-down pressure” of tonometry by adjusting the added weights atop the cylinder. Using this test setup, a series of tests were performed by varying the input magnetic field and the weights, which effectively adjusts the skin stiffness and the hold-down pressure, respectively. The vertical displacement of the plunger caused by the internal pulse pressure was measured using a laser displacement sensor. The output displacement waveforms were analyzed with the focus on the peak amplitude difference of the waveforms, which is related to the augmentation index (a surrogate measure of arterial stiffness). The results show that there exists an “optimal” plunger weight or “hold-down pressure” that provides the most distinct output pulse waveforms. The results further show that the difference in the first two peak values decreases as the skin stiffness increases, indicating that the stiffer the skin property, the less the “hold-down pressure” effects on the accuracy of the tonometry measurements

    Simultaneous Total Occlusion of Multiple Distal Coronary Arteries in Acute Myocardial Infarction

    Simultaneous multiple coronary artery thrombosis is a rare finding in ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We report a case of myocardial infarction with multiple ST segment elevation on the electrocardiography and total occlusions of the distal left anterior descending artery (dLAD), as well as of the second and third obtuse marginal artery on emergency coronary angiography. Thrombus aspiration was performed at dLAD and systemic glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor was used successfully. In patients with STEMI, multiple coronary thromboses are unusual and associated with patient fatality. However, assertive thrombus aspiration and antiplatelet therapy could be effective in STEMI patients with multiple distal coronary artery occlusions
