Arctic-North Pacific Coupled Impacts on the Late Autumn Cold in North America
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is known to bring an anomalously cold (warm) period to southeastern (northwestern) North America during the cold season of its positive phase through a Rossby wave linkage. This study provides evidence that the remote connection between the North Pacific and the downstream temperature over central North America is strengthened by the warm arctic conditions over the Chukchi and East Siberian Sea, especially in the late autumn season. The modulation effect of the Arctic manifests itself as an altered Rossby wave response to a transient vorticity forcing that results from an equatorward storm track shift, which is induced collaboratively by the PDO and the warm Arctic. This observational finding is supported by two independent modeling experiments: 1) an idealized coupled GCM experiment being nudged toward the warm arctic surface condition and 2) a simple stationary wave model (SWM) experiment forced by transient eddy forcing
Perirenal Fluid Collection after Kidney Transplantation
A 30-year-old male presented with pitting edema. He had received a kidney transplantation 3 months previously. His serum creatinine level was increased, and a renal ultrasound showed hypoechoic fluid collection in the perirenal space and pelvic cavity. We conducted sono-guided percutaneous drainage of the fluid collected in the pelvic cavity. The chemistry of the peritoneal fluid was more equivalent to serum chemistry values than to urinary values. Simple aspiration and treatment with antibiotics were performed. We have presented a case of lymphocele after kidney transplantation. This case suggests that physicians should remember how to differentiate the pelvic cavity fluid collection in patients who have received a kidney transplant
Enhancement of phase separation in the InGaN layer for self-assembled In-rich quantum dots
The enhancement of phase separation in the InGaN layer grown on a GaN layer with a rough surface was investigated for the formation of self-assembled In-rich quantum dots(QDs) in the InGaN layer. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that In-rich QDs with a size of 2ā5 nm were formed even in an InGaN layer with a low indium content, and a layer thickness less than the critical thickness. The room-temperature photoluminescence(PL) spectrum of this layer showed emission peaks corresponding to In-rich QDs. The temperature-dependent PL spectra showed dominant peak shifts to the lower energy side, indicating that the self-assembled In-rich QDs are formed in the InGaN layer grown on a rough GaNsurface and that the carriers are localized in In-rich QDs
Heterosporis anguillarum infections in farm cultured eels (Anguilla japonica) in Korea
Ten eels (Anguilla japonica) from a fish farm in Korea were examined and diagnosed with a Heterosporis infection. The gross lesions on the trunk were uneven and the concave parts were pasty. Histopathologically, lyses of the trunk muscles, degenerative muscle fibers and the scattered spores were observed. The sporophorocyst (SPC) contained several spores with a variety of shapes. Some SPC were disrupted and the spores in the SPC were scattered in the muscle tissues. Macrophages existed near the scattered spores. Electron microscopy revealed special structures such as sporophorocyst containing various developmental parasitic stages such as meronts, sporonts, sporophorous vesicles and spores
Effects of pair freeze-out on photon distributions in BBN epoch
We investigate the evolution of non-extensivity in the photon distribution
during the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) epoch using Tsallis statistics.
Assuming a minimal deviation from the Planck distribution, we construct the
perturbed Boltzmann equation for photons, including the collision terms for
pair creation and annihilation processes. We analyze the possibility that these
collisions could cause a slight increase in the number of high-frequency
photons within the BBN era, and consequently, the primordial plasma might be
temporarily placed in a state of chemical non-equilibrium. We also discuss the
restoration of the photon distribution to an equilibrium state as the Universe
enters the matter-dominated era. These findings, which suggest possible changes
in the photon distribution during the epoch between the BBN and the
recombination, offer insights that support the previously proposed ansatz
solution to the primordial lithium problem in arXiv:1812.09472.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Evaluation of Cell Toxicity and Surface Properties of Surface Modified Ti and Ti Alloys
This study was performed to investigate the surface properties and cell toxicity of the anodized and hydrothermally treated Ti, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy. Bioactivity was evaluated from the surface activation layers formed on the surface of specimens in simulated body fluid (SBF) for a period of 30 days. Cell toxicity was evaluated based on the optical density of the survival cell. The porous oxide films were formed on all of the specimens by anodic oxidation. The oxide films of Ti were composed of strong anatase peaks without rutile peaks, Ti-6Al-4V alloy was composed of weak anatase peaks and weak rutile peaks and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy was composed of strong anatase peaks and weak rutile peaks. The oxide films of all of the specimens exhibited an increase in the intensity of anatase peaks after hydrothermal treatment. The surface activation layers were formed only on the oxide films of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, also this alloy presented a significantly higher optical density than Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy on the MTT assay for cell toxicity evaluation
Size distributions of atmospheric particulate matter and associated trace metals in the multi-industrial city of Ulsan, Korea
Particulate matter (PM) was collected using micro-orifice uniform deposit impactors from a residential (RES) site and an industrial (IND) site in Ulsan, South Korea, in September-October 2014. The PM samples were measured based on their size distributions (11 stages), ranging from 0.06 ??m to over 18.0 ??m. Nine trace metals (As, Se, Cr, V, Cd, Pb, Ba, Sb, and Zn) associated with PM were analyzed. The PM samples exhibited weak bimodal distributions irrespective of sampling sites and events, and the mean concentrations of total PM (TPM) measured at the IND site (56.7 ??g/m3) was higher than that measured at the RES site (38.2 ??g/m3). The IND site also showed higher levels of nine trace metals, reflecting the influence of industrial activities and traffic emissions. At both sites, four trace metals (Ba, Zn, V, and Cr) contributed to over 80% of the total concentrations in TPM. The modality of individual trace metals was not strong except for Zn; however, the nine trace metals in PM2.5 and PM10 accounted for approximately 50% and 90% of the total concentrations in TPM, respectively. This result indicates that the size distributions of PM and trace metals are important to understand how respirable PM affects public health
Enhancing ketamine anesthesia with midazolam and fentanyl for childrenās ear surgery: a prospective randomized study
Background Myringotomy with tympanostomy tube insertion (MTI) is a superficial surgical procedure used to prevent hearing loss in children with serous otitis media. Intravenous anesthesia, often ketamine, is preferred for this procedure because of its ability to induce sedation without compromising airway reflexes. However, ketamine alone may be insufficient and potentially lead to spontaneous movement during surgery. This study evaluated the effectiveness of midazolam and fentanyl as adjuvants to ketamine in reducing spontaneous movement during MTI and enhancing the quality of recovery. Methods This study involved two groups of 30 patients each: one group received intravenous ketamine (1.5 mg/kg) with an equal volume of normal saline (K group), while the other received a combination of midazolam, fentanyl, and ketamine (0.05 mg/kg, 1 Ī¼g/kg, and 1.5 mg/kg, respectively; MFK group). We assessed side effects, intraoperative patient movement, surgeon satisfaction, and emergence agitation scores. Results The MFK group exhibited significantly lower scores for patient movement (p<0.01) and emergence agitation (p<0.01) and markedly higher surgeon satisfaction scores (p<0.01) than the K group. Conclusion Administering a midazolam-fentanyl-ketamine combination effectively reduced spontaneous movement during surgery and emergence agitation during recovery without prolonging discharge times in children undergoing MTI
