    Social Security and Retirement around the World: Historical Trends in Mortality and Health, Employment, and Disability Insurance Participation and Reforms - Introduction and Summary

    This is the introduction and summary to the fifth phase of an ongoing project on Social Security Programs and Retirement Around the World. The first phase described the retirement incentives inherent in plan provisions and documented the strong relationship across countries between social security incentives to retire and the proportion of older persons out of the labor force. The second phase documented the large effects that changing plan provisions would have on the labor force participation of older workers. The third phase demonstrated the consequent fiscal implications that extending labor force participation would have on net program costs—reducing government social security benefit payments and increasing government tax revenues. The fourth phase presented analyses of the relationship between the labor force participation of older persons and the labor force participation of younger persons in twelve countries. We found no evidence that increasing the employment of older persons will reduce the employment opportunities of youth and no evidence that increasing the employment of older persons will increase the unemployment of youth. This phase is intended to set the stage for and inform future more formal analysis of disability insurance programs, with this key question: Given health status, to what extent are the differences in LFP across countries determined by the provisions of disability insurance programs? Here we first consider changes in mortality over time and in particular the relationship between mortality and labor force participation, thinking of mortality as one indicator of health that is comparable across countries and over time in the same country. We then consider how mortality is related to other indicators of health status, in particular self-assessed health and then how trends in DI participation are related to changes in health. Finally we consider the effect on disability insurance participation of “natural experiments” in which the disability insurance reforms were not prompted by changes in health status or by changes in the employment circumstances of older workers. We find that these “exogenous” reforms can have a very large effect on the labor force participation of older workers.

    Analysis of Herpes Simplex Virus-Specific T Cells in the Murine Female Genital Tract Following Genital Infection with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2

    AbstractA murine model of genital infection with a thymidine kinase-deficient (tk-) strain of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) was utilized to examine the development of the local T cell response in the genital mucosa and draining genital lymph nodes (gLN). HSV-specific cytokine-secreting T cells were detected in the gLN 4 days postintravaginal inoculation but not in the urogenital tract or spleen until 5 days postinoculation, suggesting the cellular immune response originates in the gLN. More CD4+ than CD8+ gLN T cells were detected by flow cytometric analysis following primary vaginal inoculation and the majority of HSV-specific gLN T cells detected by ELISPOT were CD4+ and Th1-like based on secretion of IFNÎł and not IL-4 or IL-5. A similar population of HSV-specific memory T cells persisted in the genital tract 2 months following HSV-2 tk- genital inoculation. These data suggest that the urogenital cellular immune response elicited in mice following genital inoculation with HSV-2 tk- is predominantly CD4+ and Th1-like, resembling that observed in humans. The results of this study are important for the rational design of vaccines capable of inducing protective immunity in the genital tract

    A Real Time Ground Based Augmentation System Implemented with LabVIEW Software

    This thesis develops and implements a real time Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) in the LabVIEW environment incorporating the Local Monitor (LM) from the Closed-Loop GBAS (CL-GBAS) concept. GBAS, also referred to as the Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS), is a flight landing system that provides landing guidance information and corrections to global positioning system (GPS) for aircraft. CL-GBAS is an implementation of LAAS that was prototyped in 2007 and uses the LM and Far Field Monitor (FFM) integrity monitoring systems to assess the accuracy of the GPS corrections generated in the system and to assess the validity of the data broadcast. The software architecture leverages the robust timing and pipelining features of LabVIEW to perform data acquisition and synchronization, perform the LAAS algorithm to generate Type 1 corrections, perform the CL-GBAS algorithm to evaluate the accuracy of the GPS corrections, and perform communication with the VHF Data Broadcast (VDB) transmitter. The LAAS ground facility (LGF) was successfully constructed and integrated with GPS receivers and a VDB transmitter and the accuracy of the GBAS corrections were determined to perform at the highest GBAS Service Level (GSL F)
