Penetration of Commercial and Dental Waxes
Penetration of commercial and dental waxes was studied. Measurements indicated that resistance of paraffin and dental inlay waxes to penetration was closely related to the temperature at which solid-solid transformations occurred. Self-generated magnetic flux in YBaCuO grain boundaries
Grain boundaries in YBaCuO superconducting films are
considered as Josephson junctions with a critical current density
alternating along the junction. A self-generated magnetic flux is treated both
analytically and numerically for an almost periodic distribution of .
We obtained a magnetic flux-pattern similar to the one which was recently

This paper makes an attempt to present the economics of credit securitization in a non-technical way, starting from the description and the analysis of a typical securitization transaction. The paper sketches a theoretical explanation for why tranching, or nonproportional risk sharing, which is at the heart of securitization transactions, may allow commercial banks to maximize their shareholder value. However, the analysis makes also clear that the conditions under which credit securitization enhances welfare, are fairly restrictive, and require not only an active role of the banking supervisiory authorities, but also a price tag on the implicit insurance currently provided by the lender of last resort. The Hartree ensemble approximation revisited: The "symmetric phase"
The Hartree ensemble approximation is studied in the ``symmetric phase'' of
1+1 dimensional lambda phi^4 theory. In comparison with the ``broken phase''
studied previously, it is shown that the dynamical evolution of observables
such as the particle distribution, energy exchange and auto-correlation
functions, is substantially slower. Approximate thermalization is found only

Redox Potentials and Denitrification in a Cropped Potato Processing Waste Water Disposal Field
Many potato processors apply processing waste water containing
nitrogen and other plant nutrients to cropped land. More than 1
metric ton of N per hectare was applied each year when waste water
application averaged 230 cm/year on one field for 2 years. Less
than 300 kg N/ha was recovered in the harvested grass hay, and
only about 15 kg N/ha leached each season. Redox measurements
made at several depths from 5 to 150 cm showed poorly aerated
zones in the soil profile because of a high water table during the
summer. Under these conditions, nitrate leached into these poorly
aerated zones would be denitrified. Sufficient decomposable organic
matter was present to provide energy for denitrification
Redox Potentials in a Cropped Potato Processing Waste Water Disposal Field with a Deep Water Table
Redox potential measurements were made in a field irrigated with
potato processing waste water at seven depths of 5 to 150 cm for 14
mo. Irrigation with canal water mixed with waste water in the summer,
and with waste water in the winter, decreased redox potentials in
the field at some depths for a short time but not enough to cause denitrification.
However, as the soil temperature increased in the spring,
and decomposition of the accumulated waste organic matter accelerated,
redox potentials decreased after each irrigation at all observed
depths. During April, redox potentials low enough to promote denitrification
(below + 225 mV) at 90-, 120-, and 150-cm depths in the soil
persisted for 2 weeks. Irrigation with nondiluted waste water in June
and July decreased redox potentials and denitrification occurred for
up to 3 days after irrigations. As the soil temperature increased in the
spring, nitrification of accumulated organic matter increased son nitrates.
Waste water irrigations from April to July promoted denitrification,
removing most of the nitrate from the soil, and thereby decreasing
the potential for ground water pollution
Pre- and post-selected ensembles and time-symmetry in quantum mechanics
An expression is proposed for the quantum mechanical state of a pre- and
post-selected ensemble, which is an ensemble determined by the final as well as
the initial state of the quantum systems involved. It is shown that the
probabilities calculated from the proposed state agree with previous
expressions, for cases where they both apply. The same probabilities are found
when they are calculated in the forward- or reverse-time directions. This work
was prompted by several problems raised by Shimony recently in relation to the

Radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance as a sensitive probe of the zero-field spin splitting in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices
We suggest an approach for characterizing the zero-field spin splitting of
high mobility two-dimensional electron systems, when beats are not readily
observable in the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The zero-field spin splitting and
the effective magnetic field seen in the reference frame of the electron is
evaluated from a quantitative study of beats observed in radiation-induced
