Shapes of the Proton
A model proton wave function, constructed using Poincare invariance, and
constrained by recent electromagnetic form factor data, is used to study the
shape of the proton. Spin-dependent quark densities are defined as matrix
elements of density operators in proton states of definite spin-polarization,
and shown to have an infinite variety of non-spherical shapes. For high
momentum quarks with spin parallel to that of the proton, the shape resembles
that of a peanut, but for quarks with anti-parallel spin the shape is that of a
bagel.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. C This corrects a

The Canadian Register of Marine Species photo gallery: A user's guide
The Canadian portal of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) hosts taxonomic information specific to aquatic regions in Canada. A user-contributed photogallery serves to complement the taxonomic records for Canadian regions with digital images of species. Images are also viewed by partner registers and species portals around the world. This guide will assist users with the preparation of images and related data to be uploaded to the photogallery, thereby ensuring correct species names and author credit, and facilitate discovery and browsing of taxonomic entries using this public web resource
Observation of Precipitation Evolution in Fe-Ni-Mn-Ti-Al Maraging Steel by Atom Probe Tomography
We describe the full decomposition sequence in an Fe-Ni-Mn-Ti-Al maraging steel during isothermal annealing at 550 °C. Following significant pre-precipitation clustering reactions within the supersaturated martensitic solid solution, (Ni,Fe)3Ti and (Ni,Fe)3(Al,Mn) precipitates eventually form after isothermal aging for ~60 seconds. The morphology of the (Ni,Fe)3Ti particles changes gradually during aging from predominantly plate-like to rod-like, and, importantly, Mn and Al were observed to segregate to these precipitate/matrix interfaces. The (Ni,Fe)3(Al,Mn) precipitates occurred at two main locations: uniformly within the matrix and at the periphery of the (Ni,Fe)3Ti particles. We relate this latter mode of precipitation to the Mn-Al segregation
Pure O-sequences and matroid h-vectors
We study Stanley's long-standing conjecture that the h-vectors of matroid
simplicial complexes are pure O-sequences. Our method consists of a new and
more abstract approach, which shifts the focus from working on constructing
suitable artinian level monomial ideals, as often done in the past, to the
study of properties of pure O-sequences. We propose a conjecture on pure
O-sequences and settle it in small socle degrees. This allows us to prove
Stanley's conjecture for all matroids of rank 3. At the end of the paper, using
our method, we discuss a first possible approach to Stanley's conjecture in
full generality. Our technical work on pure O-sequences also uses very recent
results of the third author and collaborators.Comment: Contains several changes/updates with respect to the previous
version. In particular, a discussion of a possible approach to the general
case is included at the end. 13 pages. To appear in the Annals of

An explorative study of interface support for image searching
In this paper we study interfaces for image retrieval systems. Current image retrieval interfaces are limited to providing query facilities and result presentation. The user can inspect the results and possibly provide feedback on their relevance for the current query. Our approach, in contrast, encourages the user to group and organise their search results and thus provide more fine-grained feedback for the system. It combines the search and management process, which - according to our hypothesis - helps the user to onceptualise their search tasks and to overcome the query formulation problem. An evaluation, involving young design-professionals and di®erent types of information seeking scenarios, shows that the proposed approach succeeds in encouraging the user to conceptualise their tasks and that it leads to increased user satisfaction. However, it could not be shown to increase performance. We identify the problems in the current setup, which when eliminated should lead to more effective searching overall
Gauge invariant reduction to the light-front
The problem of constructing gauge invariant currents in terms of light-cone
bound-state wave functions is solved by utilising the gauging of equations
method. In particular, it is shown how to construct perturbative expansions of
the electromagnetic current in the light-cone formalism, such that current
conservation is satisfied at each order of the perturbation theory.Comment: 12 pages, revtex
Effect of gluon-exchange pair-currents on the ratio G(E(P))/G(M(P))
The effect of one-gluon-exchange (OGE) pair-currents on the ratio for the proton is investigated within a nonrelativistic
constituent quark model (CQM) starting from nucleon wave
functions, but with relativistic corrections. We found that the OGE
pair-currents are important to reproduce well the ratio .
With the assumption that the OGE pair-currents are the driving mechanism for
the violation of the scaling law we give a prediction for the ratio of the neutron.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Utilizing a biology-driven approach to map the exposome in health and disease:An essential investment to drive the next generation of environmental discovery
BACKGROUND: Recent developments in technologies have offered opportunities to measure the exposome with unprecedented accuracy and scale. However, because most investigations have targeted only a few exposures at a time, it is hypothesized that the majority of the environmental determinants of chronic diseases remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: We describe a functional exposome concept and explain how it can leverage existing bioassays and high-resolution mass spectrometry for exploratory study. We discuss how such an approach can address well-known barriers to interpret exposures and present a vision of next-generation exposomics. DISCUSSION: The exposome is vast. Instead of trying to capture all exposures, we can reduce the complexity by measuring the functional exposome— the totality of the biologically active exposures relevant to disease development—through coupling biochemical receptor-binding assays with affinity purification–mass spectrometry. We claim the idea of capturing exposures with functional biomolecules opens new opportunities to solve critical problems in exposomics, including low-dose detection, unknown annotations, and complex mixtures of exposures. Although novel, biology-based measurement can make use of the existing data processing and bioinformatics pipelines. The functional exposome concept also complements conven-tional targeted and untargeted approaches for understanding exposure-disease relationships. CONCLUSIONS: Although measurement technology has advanced, critical technological, analytical, and inferential barriers impede the detection of many environmental exposures relevant to chronic-disease etiology. Through biology-driven exposomics, it is possible to simultaneously scale up discovery of these causal environmental factors. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP8327
QCD Form Factors and Hadron Helicity Non-Conservation
Recent data for the ratio shocked the
community by disobeying expectations held for 50 years. We examine the status
of perturbative QCD predictions for helicity-flip form factors. Contrary to
common belief, we find there is no rule of hadron helicity conservation for
form factors. Instead the analysis yields an inequality that the leading power
of helicity-flip processes may equal or exceed the power of helicity conserving
processes. Numerical calculations support the rule, and extend the result to
the regime of laboratory momentum transfer . Quark orbital angular
momentum, an important feature of the helicity flip processes, may play a role
in all form factors at large , depending on the quark wave functions.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
