The Problem with Page to Screen Adaptation: A Case Study of King Arthur and Tristan and Isolt

    Get PDF
The legends of King Arthur and Tristan and Isolt have been popular for centuries, leading to multiple translations and versions of each text. Modern filmmakers have added to this legacy. Though audiences have enjoyed various contemporary film adaptations of these medieval romances, several essential elements are lost while translating the works to screen. This paper identifies a central motif in each work—King Arthur’s Round Table and Isolt’s love potion—that shapes the subsequent love triangle, and by extension, the representation and motivation of honor. While tracing the continued appearance of such components and their importance in the text sources of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wace, Chrétien de Troyes, Thomas Malory, Gottfried von Strassburg, and Joseph Bédier, this paper will then discuss how each is manipulated by modern filmmakers and the lasting consequences on the legends as a result of such changes

Convergence in Income Inequality: Further Evidence from the Club Clustering Methodology across States in the U.S.

This paper contributes to the sparse literature on inequality convergence by empirically testing convergence across states in the U.S. This sample period encompasses a series of different periods that the existing literature discusses -- the Great Depression (1929–1944), the Great Compression (1945–1979), the Great Divergence (1980-present), the Great Moderation (1982–2007), and the Great Recession (2007–2009). This paper implements the relatively new method of panel convergence testing, recommended by Phillips and Sul (2007). This method examines the club convergence hypothesis, which argues that certain countries, states, sectors, or regions belong to a club that moves from disequilibrium positions to their club-specific steady-state positions. We find strong support for convergence through the late 1970s and early 1980s, and then evidence of divergence. The divergence, however, moves the dispersion of inequality measures across states only a fraction of the way back to their levels in the early part of the twentieth century

    Resources for College Libraries (RCL)

Resources for College Libraries (RCL) is a subscription bibliographic database produced by Bowker (a ProQuest affiliate), Choice, and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Primarily a collection development tool, the database provides titles of print and electronic books, Web sites, and databases deemed essential by subject specialists for four- and two-year college and vocational and technical school library collections. This resource is a seminal tool for library collection development, maintenance, and assessment

The Relationship of Goal Focus to Physical Distance, Job Title and Years Served within the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between physical distance from the headquarters, number of years working within the Division of Agriculture, and job title compared to mission statement and goal focus. The Division of Agriculture as part of the University of Arkansas System is a unique organization because many of its employees are not physically located at the headquarter locations of Little Rock and Fayetteville. The Cooperative Extension Service, part of the Division of Agriculture, has at least one office in each of Arkansas\u27s 75 counties as well as faculty and staff members located at five Research and Extension Centers in the state. The instrument used for the study was Organizational Orientations: Upward Mobile Orientation Measure by McCroskey, Richmond, Johnson and Smith (2004). The survey was comprised of 18 Likert-type scale questions on upward advancement as well as an additional nine Likert-type questions and one open-ended question on mission statement and goal focus. The survey was delivered electronically to 499 full-time Division of Agriculture employees located at the Cooperative Extension Service headquarters in Little Rock, four Research and Extension Centers, and surrounding county offices. A total of 254 completed surveys were returned. Data analysis including the number, mean score, standard deviation and range of each responding group and the categories within each group were conducted. The conclusions reached through this study are that the mission statement and goal focus of Division of Agriculture employees compared to physical distance from the headquarters was not statistically significant. The study also concluded that the mission statement and goal focus of Division employees compared to job title, years employed, age, or gender was not statistically significant. The only statistically significance found when comparing mission statement and goal focus was with race categories

THE ROLE OF TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN FOSTERING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ SELF-EFFICACY IN MATHEMATICS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is: (1) To examine the perceptions of preservice teachers in teacher education programs in relationship to self-efficacy with the focus on mathematics, (2) Compare student’s self-efficacy based upon the year in college, (3) Compare student’s self-efficacy based upon their concentration, and (4) Compare student’s self-efficacy based upon the program they are enrolled in. With the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) being introduced and implemented in 2010, many preservice teachers currently enrolled in college courses would not have been exposed to said standards while students in elementary school. Therefore, with their first introduction to pedagogy and vocabulary for CCSSM likely occurring during their college mathematics methodology classes and through their student teaching experiences, there is a deficiency of foundational knowledge to draw upon. The study participants were students enrolled full-time from the School of Education who will be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year, all concentrations, and in the elementary or adolescent education program. Based upon the results of the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument, the results showed that there were no significant differences based upon the year within the program nor program type. However, participants with concentrations in mathematics scored higher than those with “other” concentrations
