    Impurity effect on Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces: Analysis based on iron-based superconductors

    The effect of impurities on a superconductor with Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces (BFSs) is studied using a realistic tight-binding model. Based on the band structure composed of dd-orbitals in tetragonal FeSe, whose S-doped sample is a potential material for BFS, we construct the superconducting state by introducing a time-reversal broken pair potential in terms of the band index. We further consider the effect of impurities on the BFS, where the impurity potential is defined as a local potential for the original dd-orbitals. The self-energy is calculated using the (self-consistent) Born approximation, which shows an enhancement of the single-particle spectral weight on the Fermi surface. This is consistent with the previous phenomenological theory and is justified by the present more detailed calculation based on the FeSe-based material.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Immunocytochemical Analysis of α-Tubulin Distribution Before and After Rapid Axopodial Contraction in the Centrohelid Raphidocystis contractilis

    The centrohelid Raphidocystis contractilis is a heliozoan that has many radiating axopodia, each containing a bundle of microtubules. Although the rapid contraction of the axopodia at nearly a video rate (30 frames/s) is induced by mechanical stimuli, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon in R. contractilis has not yet been elucidated. In the present study, we described for the first time an adequate immunocytochemical fixation procedure for R. contractilis and the cellular distribution of α-tubulin before and after rapid axopodial contraction. We developed a flow-through chamber equipped with a micro-syringe pump that allowed the test solution to be injected at a flow rate below the threshold required to induce rapid axopodial contraction. Next, we used this injection method for evaluating the effects of different combinations of two fixatives (paraformaldehyde or glutaraldehyde) and two buffers (phosphate buffer or PHEM) on the morphological structure of the axopodia. A low concentration of glutaraldehyde in PHEM was identified as an adequate fixative for immunocytochemistry. The distribution of α-tubulin before and after rapid axopodial contraction was examined using immunocytochemistry and confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy. Positive signals were initially detected along the extended axopodia from the tips to the bases and were distributed in a non-uniform manner within the axopodia. Conversely, after the induction of a rapid axopodial contraction, these positive signals accumulated in the peripheral region of the cell. These results indicated that axopodial microtubules disassemble into fragments and/ or tubulin subunits during rapid axopodial contraction. Therefore, we hypothesize that the mechanism of extremely rapid axopodial contraction accompanied by cytoskeletal microtubule degradation in R. contractilis involves microtubule-severing at multiple sites

    Development of a low-alpha-emitting {\mu}-PIC for NEWAGE direction-sensitive dark-matter search

    NEWAGE is a direction-sensitive dark-matter-search experiment that uses a micro-patterned gaseous detector, or {\mu}-PIC, as the readout. The main background sources are {\alpha}-rays from radioactive contaminants in the {\mu}-PIC. We have therefore developed a low-alpha-emitting {\mu}-PICs and measured its performances. We measured the surface {\alpha}-ray emission rate of the {\mu}-PIC in the Kamioka mine using a surface {\alpha}-ray counter based on a micro TPC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Role of methionine adenosyltransferase 2A in bovine preimplantation development and its associated genomic regions

    Methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) is involved in folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism, which is essential for preimplantation embryos in terms of both short-term periconceptional development and long-term phenotypic programming beyond the periconceptional period. Here, our immunofluorescence analysis of bovine oocytes and preimplantation embryos revealed the consistent expression of MAT2A (the catalytic subunit of the ubiquitously expressed-type of MAT isozyme) during this period. Addition of the MAT2A inhibitor FIDAS to the culture media of bovine preimplantation embryos reduced their blastocyst development, revealing the particular importance of MAT2A in successful blastocyst development. Exploration of MAT2A-associated genomic regions in bovine blastocysts using chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing (ChIP-seq) identified candidate MAT2A-associated genes implicated not only in short-term periconceptional embryo development, but also in long-term phenotypic programming during this period in terms of growth, metabolism, and immune functions. These results suggest the critical involvement of MAT2A in the periconceptional period in life-long programming of health and disease as well as successful preimplantation development

    Risk Evaluation for Coronary Artery Disease in Patients With Impaired Glucose Tolerance After a Successful Coronary Intervention

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the endothelial function and its association with coronary risk factors after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Materials and Methods: A total of 14 patients with impaired glucose tolerance and CAD underwent positron emission tomography with N-13 ammonia to measure myocardial blood flow (MBF) at rest and during a cold pressor test (CPT), to estimate endothelial function as a percent increase (%increase) of MBF. The results were compared among normal segments (normal), reperfused segments with PCI (PCI), and nonculprit CAD segments without PCI (non-PCI). Correlations between the %increase and major risk factors were also investigated. Results: CPT induced significant increase in MBF in all groups. The %increase of normal, non-PCI, and PCI groups were 33% +/- 22%, 21% +/- 23%, and 26% +/- 23%, respectively. Comparison with risk factors demonstrated significant correlations only in the non-PCI group. Specifically, there were negative correlations between %increase and fasting blood sugar (r = -0.64, P < 0.05), hemoglobin A1c (r = -0.74, P < 0.05), total cholesterol (r = -0.87, P < 0.05), triglyceride (r = -0.71, P < 0.05), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = -0.92, P < 0.005), respectively. Conclusions: Although impaired glucose tolerance patients with a PCI-treated coronary stenosis showed preserved response to CPT, the %increase negatively correlated with risk factors in the non-PCI segments.     Analysis of a city‐wide COVID‐19 prevention strategy for aged‐care facilities during third and fifth waves of COVID‐19 in Kyoto City, Kyoto, Japan

    [Background] During the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2020, clusters occurred frequently in aged-care facilities (ACFs), which put pressure on the medical field in Japan. Based on this experience, Kyoto University and Kyoto City collaborated to promote a citywide COVID-19 prevention strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within ACFs. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of the prevention strategy among ACFs in Kyoto City during the third and fifth waves of the pandemic. [Methods] During the study period, the following measures were adopted as the prevention strategy in all ACFs: (1) active polymerase chain reaction (PCR) mass testing and facility-wide testing when a single case was identified, (2) implementation of strategies to prevent transmission within a facility, and (3) vaccination program for ACFs. [Results] Of the 1, 144 facilities subjected to the mass testing, 71.0% participated in the whole program including active PCR testing. The remainder participated in the rest of the programs. The prevalence of ACF-related COVID-19 cases among total COVID-19 cases in Kyoto City decreased from 7.9% in the third wave to 4.1% in the fourth wave and 2.1% in the fifth wave. The incidence of clusters and proportion of severe elderly cases also decreased during the study period. [Conclusions] A city-wide multidisciplinary effort including PCR mass testing and a vaccination program in cooperation with a university and local administrative office successfully reduced the clusters and transmission in ACFs in Kyoto City, Japan
