Efficiency in the Romanian Banking System: An Application of Data Envelopment Analysis

    Get PDF
The paper analyzes the efficiency and productivity of the Romanian banks from 2006-08. It uses a non-parametric approach, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) to analyze banks’ efficiency. Based on a sample of 15 commercial banks, our findings reveal that although the efficiency of the Romanian commercial banks improved since 2006, the cost efficiency scores are relatively low. Also, even if in 2007 the total factor productivity increased, in 2008 this score of the average productivity of banks decreased.bank performance, cost efficiency, productivity, data envelopment analysis, Malmquist Index

Efficiency and productivity in banks developed through Data Envelopment Analysis: a cross country-perspective

The paper analyzes the efficiency and productivity of the most important banking system from 2006-08 and tries to address the long-term challenges posed by the global financial crisis. A non-parametric frontier analysis (DEA) is applied to estimate the relative efficiency of banks segments in six industrial countries. A Malmquist decomposition is then carried out in order to separate efficiency change from technical change. Based on a large sample of banks, our findings reveal that banking efficiency has decreased since 2007. If in 2006 eight of the 13 banking sectors included in the study were situated on the efficiency frontier, in 2008 only three of them succeeded in reaching this frontier. In what concerns the productivity we observe an obvious tendency of aggravation. Therefore this index knew a decrease of 9.1% in 2007 in comparison with 2006 and it also continued to decrease in 2008.bank performance, cost efficiency, productivity, data envelopment analysis, Malmquist Index

The analysis of the monetary policy dynamics in Romania using a Structural Vector Autoregressive model

    Get PDF
The present study aims at an econometric investigation oriented toward the estimation of the monetary policy dynamics in Romania, using a model based on the Autoregressive Structural Vector, imposing some restrictions on short term for knowing the response functions of the main macroeconomic variables at various economic shocks. Section I contains an argumentation of using the SVAR model. Sections 2 and 3 present the elaboration conditions of the SVAR model for the economy of Romania and the obtained results, and the last section comprises the conclusions.monetary policy dynamics, Romanian SVAR model, econometric investigation

Productivity clustering and growth in Central and Eastern Europe

    No full text
This article uses a non-linear time-varying model to test productivity convergence in 10 emerging countries within Central and Eastern Europe. The results show that the convergence algorithm has rejected the null hypothesis of convergence for all countries in most of the sectors. Also, we found evidence that the productivity clusters for total economy and other sectors are very different in terms of number and countries. Additionally, even if the productivity gaps in the region have been reduced, we still notice significant disparities between countries. The clustering algorithm shows countries which have a high productivity growth in some sectors and a low productivity growth in others. This reveals the prevalence of idiosyncratic factors in productivity determinants. Baltic countries are catching up, while other countries such as Bulgaria are underperformers.21 Halama
