    Cool Pions move at less than the speed of light

    At nonzero temperature, pions propagate through a thermal medium at less than the speed of light. About low temperature, this effect begins not at T2\sim T^2, but at next to leading order, T4\sim T^4.     Biofilms in porous media: development of macroscopic transport equations via volume averaging with closure for local mass equilibrium conditions

    In this work, we upscale a pore-scale description of mass transport in a porous medium containing biofilm to develop the relevant Darcy-scale equations. We begin with the pore-scale descriptions of mass transport, interphase mass transfer, and biologically-mediated reactions; these processes are then upscaled using the method of volume averaging to obtain the macroscale mass balance equations. We focus on the case of local mass equilibrium conditions where the averaged concentrations in the fluid and biological phases can be assumed to be proportional and for which a one-equation macroscopic model may be developed. We predict the effective dispersion tensor by a closure scheme that is solved for the cases of both simple and complex unit cells. The domain of validity of the approach is clearly identified, both theoretically and numerically, and unitless groupings indicating the domain of validity are reported

    Avian malaria is absent in juvenile colonial herons (Ardeidae) but not Culex pipiens mosquitoes in the Camargue, Southern France

    Apicomplexan blood parasites Plasmodium and Haemoproteus (together termed “Avian malaria”) and Leucocytozoon are widespread, diverse vector-transmitted blood parasites of birds, and conditions associated with colonial nesting in herons (Ardeidae) and other waterbirds appear perfect for their transmission. Despite studies in other locations reporting high prevalence of parasites in juvenile herons, juvenile Little Egrets (Egretta garzetta) previously tested in the Camargue, Southern France, had a total absence of malaria parasites. This study tested the hypotheses that this absence was due to insufficient sensitivity of the tests of infection; an absence of infective vectors; or testing birds too early in their lives. Blood was sampled from juveniles of four species shortly before fledging: Little Egret (n = 40), Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis; n = 40), Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax, n = 40), and Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides; n = 40). Sensitive nested-Polymerase Chain Reaction was used to test for the presence of parasites in both birds and host-seeking female mosquitoes captured around the colonies. No malaria infection was found of in any of the heron species. Four different lineages of Plasmodium were detected in pooled samples of female Culex pipiens mosquitoes, including two in potentially infective mosquitoes. These results confirm that the absence of malaria parasites previously demonstrated in Little Egret is not due to methodological limitations. Although the prevalence of infection in mosquitoes was low, conditions within the colonies were suitable for transmission of Plasmodium. These colonial heron species may have evolved strategies for resisting malaria infection through physiological or behavioral mechanisms

    Partial normalizations of coxeter arrangements and discriminants

    We study natural partial normalization spaces of Coxeter arrangements and discriminants and relate their geometry to representation theory. The underlying ring structures arise from Dubrovin’s Frobenius manifold structure which is lifted (without unit) to the space of the arrangement. We also describe an independent approach to these structures via duality of maximal Cohen–Macaulay fractional ideals. In the process, we find 3rd order differential relations for the basic invariants of the Coxeter group. Finally, we show that our partial normalizations give rise to new free divisors

    Proca equations derived from first principles

    Gersten has shown how Maxwell equations can be derived from first principles, similar to those which have been used to obtain the Dirac relativistic electron equation. We show how Proca equations can be also deduced from first principles, similar to those which have been used to find Dirac and Maxwell equations. Contrary to Maxwell equations, it is necessary to introduce a potential in order to transform a second order differential equation, as the Klein-Gordon equation, into a first order differential equation, like Proca equations.Comment: 6 page
