DEMAND FOR DIFFERENTIATED VEGETABLES
To obtain a healthier diet, Americans need to consume not only more vegetables, but also a healthier mix of vegetables. Household demands for eight categories of vegetables are investigated, using ACNielsen's Homescan data. A maximum simulated likelihood estimation procedure results in elasticity estimates which are somewhat larger than those obtained from both time-series and cross-section data in the literature. Even these larger elasticities are not large enough to bridge the dietary consumption gap without, and possibly even with, substantial price or food expenditure subsidies. Furthermore, Homescan data do indicate some significant differences in preferences for types of vegetables by household characteristics, such as race and ethnicity. Bayesian Speaker Adaptation Based on a New Hierarchical Probabilistic Model
In this paper, a new hierarchical Bayesian speaker adaptation method called HMAP is proposed that combines the advantages of three conventional algorithms, maximum a posteriori (MAP), maximum-likelihood linear regression (MLLR), and eigenvoice, resulting in excellent performance across a wide range of adaptation conditions. The new method efficiently utilizes intra-speaker and inter-speaker correlation information through modeling phone and speaker subspaces in a consistent hierarchical Bayesian way. The phone variations for a specific speaker are assumed to be located in a low-dimensional subspace. The phone coordinate, which is shared among different speakers, implicitly contains the intra-speaker correlation information. For a specific speaker, the phone variation, represented by speaker-dependent eigenphones, are concatenated into a supervector. The eigenphone supervector space is also a low dimensional speaker subspace, which contains inter-speaker correlation information. Using principal component analysis (PCA), a new hierarchical probabilistic model for the generation of the speech observations is obtained. Speaker adaptation based on the new hierarchical model is derived using the maximum a posteriori criterion in a top-down manner. Both batch adaptation and online adaptation schemes are proposed. With tuned parameters, the new method can handle varying amounts of adaptation data automatically and efficiently. Experimental results on a Mandarin Chinese continuous speech recognition task show good performance under all testing conditions
Calibration and Irradiation Study of the BGO Background Monitor for the BEAST II Experiment
Beam commissioning of the SuperKEKB collider began in 2016. The Beam Exorcism
for A STable experiment II (BEAST II) project is particularly designed to
measure the beam backgrounds around the interaction point of the SuperKEKB
collider for the Belle II experiment. We develop a system using bismuth
germanium oxide (BGO) crystals with optical fibers connecting to a multianode
photomultiplier tube (MAPMT) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)
embedded readout board for monitoring the real-time beam backgrounds in BEAST
II. The overall radiation sensitivity of this system is estimated to be
Gy/ADU (analog-to-digital unit) with the standard
10 m fibers for transmission and the MAPMT operating at 700 V. Our -ray
irradiation study of the BGO system shows that the exposure of BGO crystals to
Co -ray doses of 1 krad has led to immediate light output
reductions of 25--40%, and the light outputs further drop by 30--45% after the
crystals receive doses of 2--4 krad. Our findings agree with those of the
previous studies on the radiation hard (RH) BGO crystals grown by the low
thermal gradient Czochralski (LTG Cz) technology. The absolute dose from the
BGO system is also consistent with the simulation, and is estimated to be about
1.18 times the equivalent dose. These results prove that the BGO system is able
to monitor the background dose rate in real time under extreme high radiation
conditions. This study concludes that the BGO system is reliable for the beam
background study in BEAST II

This update of China food law builds on a unique feature for the Journal of Food Law .& Policy that has been provided since the Journal\u27s inception - separate food law updates for both the United States and European Union. Recognizing the globalness of the modem food system, these updates have served an invaluable role in keeping scholars and practitioners abreast of the world\u27s leading food regulatory systems. China\u27s emergence as a developed, modem food regulatory system with the potential of being a leading food regulatory system makes sense given its position as a world economic powerhouse. China\u27s role in the recent food safety debate over the veterinary drug ractopamine hydrochloride points to the increasingly visible leadership by China in international food law debates that are both complex and polarizing. The central issue confronting China\u27s development of food law is whether it can move fast enough in a complex modem food system to create, refine, and streamline a food regulatory regime that befits its place as a world-leading economy
Connecting VIX and Stock Index ETF
As stock market indexes are not tradeable, the importance and trading volume of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) cannot be understated. ETFs track and attempt to replicate the performance of a specific index. Numerous studies have demonstrated a strong relationship between the S&P500 Composite Index and the Volatility Index (VIX), but few empirical studies have focused on the relationship between VIX and ETF returns. The purpose of the paper is to investigate whether VIX returns affect ETF returns by using vector autoregressive (VAR) models to determine whether daily VIX returns with different moving average processes affect ETF returns. The ARCH-LM test shows conditional heteroskedasticity in the estimation of ETF returns, so that the diagonal BEKK model is used to accommodate multivariate conditional heteroskedasticity in the VAR estimates of ETF returns. Daily data on ETF returns that follow different stock indexes in the USA and Europe are used in the empirical analysis.
The estimates show that daily VIX returns have:
(1) significant negative effects on European ETF returns in the short run;
(2) stronger significant effects on single market ETF returns than on European ETF returns; and
(3) lower impacts on the European ETF returns than on S&P500 returns
WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts
Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar
scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two
and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of
the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order
corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral
Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed
ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering
shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its
two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and
the plausibility of detection is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
