Narcissism in Public Accounting Firms
Similar to other characteristics, narcissism is a personality trait that varies by individuals. While the management literature has examined narcissism, there is limited research of narcissism of professionals in public accounting firms. Using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), we assess the level of narcissism in practitioners of public accounting firms by examining differences by gender, age, practice area and position. We also compare our results with a prior study that examined narcissism of accounting majors. Our findings show there are differences between accounting students and accounting professionals for certain traits and gender. We also find there are differences for professionals by age, practice area and position for certain traits. Implications for practice are discussed
\u3ci\u3eAcrobasis\u3c/i\u3e Shoot Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Infestation-Tree Height Link in a Young Black Walnut Plantation
Acrobasis shoot moth infestations were evaluated in a young black walnut progeny test for 4 years, from ages 3 to 6. Infestation levels were greatest on the largest trees in the fourth and fifth year after plantation establishment, and were declining by the sixth year. Acrobasis infestation appears to be a problem primarily on young trees less than 2.5 m in height. There was no evidence for genetic resistance to Acrobasis infestation in black walnut
Light Phase Testing of Social Behaviors: Not a Problem
The rich repertoire of mouse social behaviors makes it possible to use mouse models to study neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by social deficits. The fact that mice are naturally nocturnal animals raises a critical question of whether behavioral experiments should be strictly conducted in the dark phase and whether light phase testing is a major methodologically mistake. Although mouse social tasks have been performed in both phases in different laboratories, there seems to be no general consensus on whether testing phase is a critical factor or not. A recent study from our group showed remarkably similar social scores obtained from inbred mice tested in the light and the dark phase, providing evidence that light phase testing could yield reliable results as robust as dark phase testing for the sociability test. Here we offer a comprehensive review on mouse social behaviors measured in light and dark phases and explain why it is reasonable to test laboratory mice in experimental social tasks in the light phase

Market-Oriented Strategies to Improve Household Access to Food: Experience from Sub-Saharan Africa
The objectives of this report are to identify market-oriented strategies to alleviate both chronic and transitory food insecurity, and to examine the interactions between short-run targeting mechanisms and longer-run strategies designed to alleviate the chronic causes of inadequate access to food. The main premise of the report is that sustained improvements in household access to food in Sub-Saharan Africa require the development of more reliable food and input markets that (a) create incentives to adopt cost-reducing investments at various stages in the food system; and (b) offer incentives for rural households to shift from a subsistence-oriented pattern of production and consumption to more productive systems based on specialization and gains from exchange. Sustained productivity growth in most parts of the world has typically entailed some form of structural transformation, which, in the historical development processes of other regions, has been a prerequisite for broad-based and sustained growth in productivity, real incomes and purchasing power throughout society. Structural transformation involves a movement away from subsistence-oriented, household-level production toward an integrated economy based on specialization and exchange. But specialization makes households dependent on the performance of exchange systems. The ability to capture the productivity gains from new technology and specialization thus depends on reducing the risks and uncertainty of market-based exchange, thereby facilitating greater participation in the types of specialized production and consumption patterns involved in the process of structural transformation. Section 3 presents empirical evidence from research conducted in Africa to draw conclusions about how the design of agricultural policies and transfer programs have affected household access to food in both rural and urban areas. Based on the foregoing, section 4 presents the following guidelines for the design of strategies to promote access to food in Africa: (1.) Focus on achieving productivity gains in the food system. (2.) Focus on how food and income transfer programs can be designed to promote the long-run development of the food system- the basis for providing food for most people over the long run in addition to providing food to people in the short run. (3.) Focus on reducing consumer food costs by expanding the range of products available to produce and consume. (4.) Focus on the cost and reliability of food supplies to rural areas as a component of non-farm, livestock, and other income diversification strategies designed to promote access to food over the longer run. Non-adiabatic effects in the phonon dispersion of Mg 1--x Al x B 2
Superconducting MgB shows an E zone center phonon, as measured
by Raman spectroscopy, that is very broad in energy and temperature dependent.
The Raman shift and lifetime show large differences with the values elsewhere
in the Brillouin Zone measured by Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS), where its
dispersion can be accounted for by standard harmonic phonon theory, adding only
a moderate electron-phonon coupling. Here we show that the effects rapidly
disappear when electron-phonon coupling is switched off by Al substitution on
the Mg sites. Moreover, using IXS with very high wave-vector resolution in
MgB, we can follow the dispersion connecting the Raman and the IXS signal,
in agreement with a theory using only electron-phonon coupling but without
strong anharmonic terms. The observation is important in order to understand
the effects of electron-phonon coupling on zone center phonons modes in
MgB, but also in all metals characterized by a small Fermi velocity in a
particular direction, typical for layered compounds
A zone of preferential ion heating extends tens of solar radii from Sun
The extreme temperatures and non-thermal nature of the solar corona and solar
wind arise from an unidentified physical mechanism that preferentially heats
certain ion species relative to others. Spectroscopic indicators of unequal
temperatures commence within a fraction of a solar radius above the surface of
the Sun, but the outer reach of this mechanism has yet to be determined. Here
we present an empirical procedure for combining interplanetary solar wind
measurements and a modeled energy equation including Coulomb relaxation to
solve for the typical outer boundary of this zone of preferential heating.
Applied to two decades of observations by the Wind spacecraft, our results are
consistent with preferential heating being active in a zone extending from the
transition region in the lower corona to an outer boundary 20-40 solar radii
from the Sun, producing a steady state super-mass-proportional
-to-proton temperature ratio of . Preferential ion heating
continues far beyond the transition region and is important for the evolution
of both the outer corona and the solar wind. The outer boundary of this zone is
well below the orbits of spacecraft at 1 AU and even closer missions such as
Helios and MESSENGER, meaning it is likely that no existing mission has
directly observed intense preferential heating, just residual signatures. We
predict that {Parker Solar Probe} will be the first spacecraft with a perihelia
sufficiently close to the Sun to pass through the outer boundary, enter the
zone of preferential heating, and directly observe the physical mechanism in

Performance of Hamamatsu 64-anode photomultipliers for use with wavelength--shifting optical fibres
Hamamatsu R5900-00-M64 and R7600-00-M64 photomultiplier tubes will be used
with wavelength--shifting optical fibres to read out scintillator strips in the
MINOS near detector. We report on measurements of the gain, efficiency,
linearity, crosstalk, and dark noise of 232 of these PMTs, of which 219 met
