    With the permission of Kenneth Palanza et al, we adapted and modified a previously generated survey that allowed us to better understand the motivations and barriers of medical students to enter primary care. The survey was dispersed to all medical students at LCOM as well as third and fourth year medical students at Ross University and American University of the Caribbean (AUC).     O presente trabalho trata de um Plano de Negócios, onde será estudado e avaliado a viabilidade económica – financeira de um Projecto de Floricultura ligado à produção intensiva de rosas em estufa. A área produtiva do empreendimento ocupará aproximadamente 4096 metros quadrados cobertos, sendo o funcionamento e gestão do processo de produção assegurado através do uso de tecnologias e métodos que premeiam a inovação e o desenvolvimento sustentável. As instalações de apoio à actividade produtiva, serão dimensionadas para ocupar aproximadamente 494 metros quadrados, e incluem áreas destinadas à gestão estratégica e administrativa do negócio, conservação, embalagem e expedição do produto. Aborda-se aqui o conceito de empreendedorismo de oportunidade num cenário de mercado em que a procura do produto tende a exceder a oferta no contexto nacional; ABSTRACT: This work is about a Business Plan, where a viability of a Floriculture Project will be economically and financially studied and evaluated taking into account the intensive production of Roses in a Greenhouse. The productive area of the project will be around 4096 covered square meters, where the management and functionality of the production process will be assured through the use of methods and technologies that reward innovation and sustainable development. The premises that support all the productive activity will be dimensioned in order to fit around 494 square meters, strategic management, maintenance, packing, product flow and business administration will be included.     Analysis of Signal Transduction Pathways Downstream M2 Receptor Activation: Effects on Schwann Cell Migration and Morphology

    Background: Schwann cells (SCs) express cholinergic receptors, suggesting a role of cholinergic signaling in the control of SC proliferation, differentiation and/or myelination. Our previous studies largely demonstrated that the pharmacological activation of the M2 muscarinic receptor subtype caused an inhibition of cell proliferation and promoted the expression of pro-myelinating differentiation genes. In order to elucidate the molecular signaling activated downstream the M2 receptor activation, in the present study we investigated the signal transduction pathways activated by the M2 orthosteric agonist arecaidine propargyl ester (APE) in SCs. Methods: Using Western blot we analyzed some components of the noncanonical pathways involving β1-arrestin and PI3K/AKT/mTORC1 signaling. A wound healing assay was used to evaluate SC migration. Results: Our results demonstrated that M2 receptor activation negatively modulated the PI3K/Akt/mTORC1 axis, possibly through β1-arrestin downregulation. The involvement of the mTORC1 complex was also supported by the decreased expression of its specific target p-p70 S6KThr389. Then, we also analyzed the expression of p-AMPKαthr172, a negative regulator of myelination that resulted in reduced levels after M2 agonist treatment. The analysis of cell migration and morphology allowed us to demonstrate that M2 receptor activation caused an arrest of SC migration and modified cell morphology probably by the modulation of β1-arrestin/cofilin-1 and PKCα expression, respectively. Conclusions: The data obtained demonstrated that M2 receptor activation in addition to the canonical Gi protein-coupled pathway modulates noncanonical pathways involving the mTORC1 complex and other kinases whose activation may contribute to the inhibition of SC proliferation and migration and address SC differentiation

    The opioid crisis: need for systems science research

    The opioid epidemic in the United States has had a devastating impact on millions of people as well as on their families and communities. The increased prevalence of opioid misuse, use disorder and overdose in recent years has highlighted the need for improved public health approaches for reducing the tremendous harms of this illness. In this paper, we explain and call for the need for more systems science approaches, which can uncover the complexities of the opioid crisis, and help evaluate, analyse and forecast the effectiveness of ongoing and new policy interventions. Similar to how a stream of systems science research helped policy development in infectious diseases and obesity, more systems science research is needed in opioids

    Healing at implant sites prepared conventionally or by means of Sonosurgery ®. An experimental study in dogs

    OBJECTIVE To compare peri-implant tissue healing at implants installed in sites prepared with conventional drills or a sonic device. MATERIAL AND METHODS In six Beagle dogs, the mandibular premolars and first molars were extracted bilaterally. After 3 months, full-thickness muco-periosteal flaps were elevated and recipient sites were prepared in both sides of the mandible. In the right side (control), the osteotomies were prepared using conventional drills, while, at the left side (test), a sonic device (Sonosurgery(®)) was used. Two implants were installed in each side of the mandible. After 8 weeks of non-submerged healing, biopsies were harvested and ground sections prepared for histological evaluation. RESULTS The time consumed for the osteotomies at the test was more than double compared to the conventional control sites. No statistically significant differences were found for any of the histological variables evaluated for hard and soft tissue dimensions. Although not statistically significant, slightly higher mineralized bone-to-implant contact was found at the test (65.4%) compared to the control (58.1) sites. CONCLUSIONS Similar healing characteristics in osseointegration and marginal hard tissue remodeling resulted at implants installed into osteotomies prepared with conventional drills or with the sonic instrument (Sonosurgery(®))

    Sequential healing at implants with different configuration and modified surfaces: an experimental study in the dog

    To evaluate the peri-implant soft and hard tissue adaptation at implants with different modified surfaces and configurations. Six Beagle dogs were used. Mandibular premolars and first molars were extracted bilaterally. After 3 months, full-thickness flaps were elevated, and two different types of trans-mucosal implants (ICX-Gold®, Medentis Medical GmbH, Dernau, Germany and SLActive®, Institute Straumann, Bern, Switzerland) and two different surfaces were randomly installed in the distal regions of one side of the mandible. Abutments were applied, and a nonsubmerged healing was allowed. After 1 month, the procedures were performed in the other side of the mandible, and after a further month, the animals were sacrificed, biopsies were collected, and ground sections prepared for histological examination. Similar results in marginal bone and soft tissues dimensions were observed after 1 month of healing at the two implant systems used, and no major changes could be observed after 2 months of healing. After 1 month, the percentage of new bone was 69.0% and 68.8% at ICX-Gold and SLActive surfaces, respectively. After 2 months, the percentage of new bone was 67.8% and 71.9% at ICX-Gold Medentis and SLActive surfaces, respectively. No statistically significant differences in osseointegration were found. The two implant systems used resulted in similar osseointegration after 1 and 2 months of healing

    Use of a titanium device in lateral sinus floor elevation: an experimental study in monkeys

    Aim: To evaluate the effect of a space-maintaining device fixed to the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus after the elevation of the sinus mucosa on bone filling of the sinus cavity. Material and methods: Immediately after the elevation of the maxillary sinus Schneiderian membrane accomplished through lateral antrostomy in four monkeys, a titanium device was affixed to the lateral sinus wall protruding into the sinus cavity to maintain the mucosa elevated without the use of grafting material. The healing of the tissue around the implants was evaluated after 3 and 6 months. Ground sections were prepared and analyzed histologically. Results: The void under the elevated sinus membrane, originally filled with the blood clot, was reduced after 3 as well as after 6 months of healing of about 56% and 40.5%, respectively. In seven out of eight cases, the devices had perforated the sinus mucosa. The formation of mineralized bone and bone marrow amounted to about 42% and 69% after 3 and 6 months, respectively. The connective tissue represented about 53% and 23% of the newly formed tissue after 3 and 6 months, respectively. Conclusions: New bone formation was found below the devices. However, shrinkage of the newly formed tissue was observed both after 3 and 6 months of healing. Hence, the space-maintaining function of the devices used in the present study has to be questioned
