EOM sideband phase characteristics for the spaceborne gravitational wave detector LISA
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a joint ESA/NASA mission proposed to observe gravitational waves. One important noise source in the LISA phase measurement will be on-board reference oscillators. An inter-spacecraft clock tone transfer chain will be necessary to remove this non-negligible phase noise in post processing. One of the primary components of this chain are electro-optic modulators (EOMs). At modulation frequencies of 2 GHz, we characterise the excess phase noise of a fibre-coupled integrated EOM in the LISA measurement band (0.1 mHz to 1 Hz). The upper phase noise limit was found to be almost an order of magnitude better than required by the LISA mission. In addition, the EOM's phase dependence on temperature and optical power was determined. The measured coefficients are within a few milliradians per kelvin and per watt respectively and thereby negligible with the expected on-board temperature and laser power stability.DLR/50 OQ 0601DFG/EXC/QUES

Why does early childhood deprivation increase the risk for depression and anxiety in adulthood? A developmental cascade model
Abstract Background: Using data from the English & Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study we recently reported that early time-lmited exposure to severe institutional deprivation is
associated with early onset and persistent neurodevelopmental problems and later
onset emotional problems. Here we examine possible reasons for the late
emergence of emotional problems in this cohort. Our main focus is on testing a
developmental cascade mediated via the functional impact of early-appearing
neurodevelopmental problems on late adolescent functioning. We also explore a
second putative pathway via sensitization to stress. Methods: The ERA study includes 165 Romanian individuals who spent their early lives in grossly depriving institutions and were subsequently adopted into UK
families, along with 52 UK adoptees with no history of deprivation. Age six years
symptoms of neurodevelopmental problems and age 15 anxiety/depression
symptoms were assessed via parental reports. Young adult symptoms of depression
and anxiety were assessed by both parent and self-reports; young adults also
completed measures of stress reactivity , exposure to adverse life events and
functioning in work and interpersonal relationships. Results: The path between early institutional deprivation and adult emotional problems was mediated via the impact of early neurodevelopmental problems on
unemployment and poor friendship functioning during the transition to adulthood.
The findings with regard to early deprivation, later life stress reactivity and emotional
problems were inconclusive.
Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that the risk for adult depression and anxiety following extreme institutional deprivation is explained through the effects of early neurodevelopmental problems on later social and vocational functioning. Future research should more fully examine the role of stress susceptibility in this model
Transportable setup for amplifier phase fidelity measurements
One possible laser source for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) consists of an Ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier originally developed for inter-satellite communication, seeded by the laser used for the technology demonstrator mission LISA Pathfinder. LISA needs to transmit clock information between its three spacecraft to correct for phase noise between the clocks on the individual spacecraft. For this purpose phase modulation sidebands at GHz frequencies will be imprinted on the laser beams between spacecraft. Differential phase noise between the carrier and a sideband introduced within the optical chain must be very low. We report on a transportable setup to measure the phase fidelity of optical amplifiers.DFG/EXC/QUESTDLR/50OQ1301DLR/50OQ060
Towards a gravitational wave observatory designer: sensitivity limits of spaceborne detectors
The most promising concept for low frequency (millihertz to hertz) gravitational wave observatories are laser interferometric detectors in space. It is usually assumed that the noise floor for such a detector is dominated by optical shot noise in the signal readout. For this to be true, a careful balance of mission parameters is crucial to keep all other parasitic disturbances below shot noise. We developed a web application that uses over 30 input parameters and considers many important technical noise sources and noise suppression techniques to derive a realistic position noise budget. It optimizes free parameters automatically and generates a detailed report on all individual noise contributions. Thus one can easily explore the entire parameter space and design a realistic gravitational wave observatory. In this document we describe the different parameters, present all underlying calculations, and compare the final observatory's sensitivity with astrophysical sources of gravitational waves. We use as an example parameters currently assumed to be likely applied to a space mission proposed to be launched in 2034 by the European Space Agency. The web application itself is publicly available on the Internet at http://spacegravity.org/designer. Future versions of the web application will incorporate the frequency dependence of different noise sources and include a more detailed model of the observatory's residual acceleration noise
The impact of childhood deprivation on adult neuropsychological functioning is associated with ADHD symptom persistence
Background: Institutional deprivation in early childhood is associated with neuropsychological deficits in adolescence. Using 20-year follow-up data from a unique natural experiment – the large scale adoption of children exposed to extreme deprivation in Romanian institutions in the 1980s – we examined, for the first time, whether such deficits are still present in adulthood and whether they are associated with deprivation-related symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Methods: Adult neuropsychological functioning was assessed across five domains (inhibitory control, facial emotion recognition, decision-making, prospective memory and IQ) in 70 previously-institutionalized adoptees (mean age= 25.3, 50% female) and 22 non-deprived UK adoptees (comparison group, mean age= 24.6, 41% female). ADHD and ASD symptoms were assessed using parent-completed questionnaires. Results: Early institutionalization was associated with impaired performance on all tasks in adulthood. Prospective memory deficits persisted after controlling for IQ. ADHD and ASD symptoms were positively correlated. After controlling for ASD symptoms, ADHD symptoms remained associated with deficits in IQ, prospective memory, proactive inhibition, decision-making quality and emotionrecognition. ASD symptoms were not independently associated with neuropsychological deficits when accounting for their overlap with ADHD symptoms. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the link between childhood deprivation and adult ADHD symptoms was statistically explained by deprivation-related differences in adult IQ and prospective memory. Conclusions: These results represent some of the most compelling evidence to date of the enduring power of early, time-limited childhood adversity to impair neuropsychological functioning across the lifespan – effects that are linked specifically to deprivation-related adult ADHD symptoms
Lasers for LISA: Overview and phase characteristics
We have investigated two alternative laser systems for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). One consisted of the laser of LISA's technology precursor LISA Pathfinder and a fiber amplifier originally designed for a laser communication terminal onboard TerraSar-X. The other consisted of a commercial fiber distributed feedback (DFB) laser seeding a fiber amplifier. We have shown that the TerraSar-X amplifier can emit more than 1W without the onset of stimulated Brillouin scattering as required by LISA. We have measured power noise and frequency noise of the LISA Pathfinder laser (LPL) and the fiber laser. The fiber laser shows comparable or even lower power noise than the LPL. LISA will use electro-optical modulators (EOMs) between seed laser and amplifier for clock noise comparison between spacecraft. This scheme requires that the excess noise added by the amplifiers be negligible. We have investigated the phase characteristics of two fiber amplifiers emitting 1 W and found them to be compatible with the LISA requirement on amplifier differential phase noise.DLR/50 OQ 0501DLR/50 OQ 060
Fiber modulators and fiber amplifiers for LISA
We present the sideband phase characteristics of a fiber-coupled integrated electro-optical modulator (EOM) at a modulation frequency of 2 GHz for Fourier frequencies from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. The upper phase noise limit was almost an order of magnitude better than required for LISA. The EOM's phase dependencies on temperature and transmitted optical power were measured and found to be uncritical. Additionally we have investigated three optical amplifiers emitting 1 W. Their differential phase noise and optical pathlength noise as one contribution to differential phase noise were measured. The measured differential phase noise was within the requirement. The dependencies of differential phase noise on pump power were measured and requirements for the operation of the amplifier on the LISA satellite derived.DLR/50 OQ 0601DFG/EXC/QUES
Readout for intersatellite laser interferometry: Measuring low frequency phase fluctuations of HF signals with microradian precision
Precision phase readout of optical beat note signals is one of the core
techniques required for intersatellite laser interferometry. Future space based
gravitational wave detectors like eLISA require such a readout over a wide
range of MHz frequencies, due to orbit induced Doppler shifts, with a precision
in the order of at frequencies between
and . In this paper, we present phase
readout systems, so-called phasemeters, that are able to achieve such
precisions and we discuss various means that have been employed to reduce noise
in the analogue circuit domain and during digitisation. We also discuss the
influence of some non-linear noise sources in the analogue domain of such
phasemeters. And finally, we present the performance that was achieved during
testing of the elegant breadboard model of the LISA phasemeter, that was
developed in the scope of an ESA technology development activity.Comment: submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments on April 30th 201
