Design of super-efficient mixer based on induced charge electroosmotic

    Get PDF
The super-efficient sample mixing induced by the induced-charge electrokinetic flow around conducting/Janus cylinder was numerically studied in a confined |U-shaped microchannel with suddenly applied DC weak electric filed. It’s found that there are four large circulations around the conducting cylinder and two smaller circulations around the Janus cylinder. The results show that samples can still be well mixed with high flux due to the induced electroosmosis. It is demonstrated that the local flow circulations provide effective means to enhance the flow mixing between different solutions. The dependence of the degree of mixing enhancement on the electric field is also predicted

BACKGROUND AND AIM Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by CAG repeats expansion. Cognitive decline contributes to the loss of daily activity in manifest HD. We aimed to examine the cognition status in a Chinese HD cohort and explore factors influencing the diverse cognitive domains. METHODS A total of 205 participants were recruited in the study with the assessment by neuropsychological batteries, including the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Stroop test, symbol digit modalities test (SDMT), trail making test (TMT), verbal fluency test (VFT), and Hopkins verbal learning test-revised, as well as motor and psychiatric assessment. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression models were applied to investigate the correlation. RESULTS Only 41.46% of patients had normal global function first come to our center. There was a significantly difference in MMSE, Stroop test, SDMT, TMT, and VFT across each stage of HD patients (p < .05). Apathy of PBA-s was correlated to MMSE, animal VFT and Stroop-interference tests performance. Severity of motor symptoms, functional capacity, age, and age of motor symptom onset were correlated to all neuropsychological scores, whereas education attainment and diagnostic delay were correlated to most neuropsychological scores except TMT. Severity of motor symptoms, functional capacity, and education attainment showed independent predicting effect (p < .05) in diverse cognitive domains. CONCLUSION Cognitive impairment was very common in Chinese HD patients at the first visit and worse in the patients in advanced phase. The severity of motor symptoms and functional capacity were correlated to the diverse cognitive domains

RF-thermal-structural-RF coupled analysis on the travelling wave disk-loaded accelerating structure

Travelling wave (TW) disk-loaded accelerating structure is one of the key components in normal conducting (NC) linear accelerators, and has been studied for many years. In the design process, usually after the dimensions of each cell and the two couplers are finalized, the structure is fabricated and tuned, and then the whole structure characteristics can be measured by the vector network analyzer. Before the structure fabrication, the whole structure characteristics are less simulated limited by the available computer capability. In this paper, we described the method to do the RF-thermal-structural-RF coupled analysis on the TW disk-loaded structure with one single PC. In order to validate our method, we first analyzed and compared our RF simulation results on the 3m long BEPCII structure with the corresponding experimental results, which shows very good consistency. Finally, the RF-thermal-structure-RF coupled analysis results on the 1.35m long NSC KIPT linac accelerating structure are presented.Comment: 5 pages, 16 figures, Submitted to the Chinese Physics C (Formerly High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics

A sodium indium hydrogen phosphate hydrate, Na2In2[PO3 (OH)](4).H2O, was synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions, and the crystal structure was characterized by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The structure is of a new type with the following data: Mr = 794.775, triclinic, aP62, P-1 (No. 2), a = 9.3013(1) Angstrom, b = 9.4976(1) Angstrom, c = 9.2685(7) Angstrom, alpha = 98.710(4)degrees, beta = 98.953(4)degrees gamma = 60.228(6)degrees V = 699.42(5) Angstrom (3), Z = 2, D-x = 3.217 g cm(-3), lambda = 0.71073 Angstrom, mu = 39.1 cm(-1), F(000) = 644, T = 293 K, R = 0.0551, wR = 0.1528 for 245 variables and 4559 contributing unique reflections. The structure is characterized by corner-sharing InO6 and PO4H polyhedra forming a three-dimensional network with infinite channels along the [100] direction, where sodium cations and water molecules reside through hydrogen bonds. The topological construction of the title structure can be considered closely related to an augmented corundum network and the augmentation of the 4, 6 net has largely increased the porosity of the compound. The thermal stability investigation shows that the compound loses its water molecules around 365 degreesC and is nonzeolitic in character. (C) 2001 Academic Press

The crystal structure of potassium tetratin(â…¡) tris(orthophosphate), KSn4(PO4)(3), obtained by hydrothermal synthesis, has been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The structure consists of [Sn4(PO4)(3)] units sharing common corners, which leads to a three-dimensional network structure and generates cages along the c direction. The cages are occupied by K atoms on threefold axes

Detecting CD20-Rituximab interaction forces using AFM single-molecule force spectroscopy

    Get PDF
The invention of atomic force microscopy (AFM) has provided new technology for measuring specific molecular interaction forces. Using AFM single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) techniques, CD20-Rituximab rupture forces were measured on purified CD20 proteins, Raji cells, and lymphoma patient B cells. Rituximab molecules were linked onto AFM tips using AFM probe functionalization technology, and purified CD20 proteins were attached to mica using substrate functionalization technology. Raji cells (a lymphoma cell line) or lymphoma patient cells were immobilized on a glass substrate via electrostatic adsorption and chemical fixation. The topography of the purified CD20 proteins, Raji cells, and patient lymphoma cells was visualized using AFM imaging and the differences in the rupture forces were analyzed and measured. The results showed that the rupture forces between the CD20 proteins on Raji cells and Rituximab were markedly smaller than those for purified CD20 proteins and CD20 proteins on lymphoma patient B cells. These findings provide an effective experimental method for investigating the mechanisms underlying the variable efficacy of Rituximab. © 2011 Science China Press and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex

Crystals of sodium tridecafluorodizirconate Na5Zr2F13 were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions, and the structure was refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in monoclinic with crystallographic data: M-r = 544.39, C2/m (No.12), a = 11.5600(9), b = 5.4759(4), c = 8.3989(6) angstrom, beta = 97.361 (10)degrees, V = 527.28(7) angstrom(3), Z = 2, D-c = 3.429 g/cm(3), lambda = 0.71073 angstrom, mu = 23.48 cm(-1), F(000) = 504, T = 295 K, R-1 = 0.0173 and wR(2) = 0.0449 for 55 variables and 682 contributing unique reflections. The crystal structure is constituted with six- and eight-fold sodium atoms, forming irregular trigonal prisms and irregular cubes, respectively. Here, the zirconium atoms are connected with seven fluorine atoms to form a mono-capped trigonal prism. [Zr2F13](5-) complex ions formed by corner-shared [ZrF7](3-) are corner- and edge-shared to [Na4F22] and [Na3F8] cages, leading to the network structure. Thermal analysis, X-ray excited luminescence and photoluminescence under UV light measurements were conducted on Na5Zr2F13 crystals

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture, an alternative medicine therapy, as a preventive treatment for menstruation-related migraine (MRM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter, double-dummy, participant-blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial conducted in China between 1 April 2013, and 30 April 2014. The participants were enrolled from four study centers and randomized to into either the acupuncture group, which received 24 sessions of acupuncture at traditional acupoints plus placebo, or the medication group, which received sham acupuncture plus naproxen. The primary endpoint was change from the baseline average number of migraine days per perimenstrual period over cycles 1−3. The secondary endpoints included changes from the baseline average number of migraine days outside the perimenstrual period, mean number of migraine hours during and outside the perimenstrual period, mean visual analog scale score during and outside the perimenstrual period, ≥50% migraine responder rate, and the proportion of participants who used acute pain medication over cycles 1−3 and 4−6. RESULTS: A total of 172 women with MRM were enrolled; 170 in the intention-to-treat analyses. Our primary outcome reported a significant between-group difference that favored the acupuncture group (95% CI, 0.17–0.50; P < 0.001), with the average reduction of migraine days per perimenstrual period from the baseline was 0.94 (95% CI, 0.82–1.07) in the acupuncture group and 0.61 (95% CI, 0.50–0.71) in the medication group over cycles 1−3. CONCLUSION: This study showed that compared to medication, acupuncture reduces the number of migraine days experienced by patients with MRM. For patients who received the acupuncture treatment over three cycles, the preventive effect of the therapy was sustained for six cycles.
