    Impact of Pavilion Quality on Exhibitor Performance at an International Trade Exhibition

    AbstractThis study aimed to determine how the quality of a pavilion affects participating exhibitors at an overseas trade exhibition and to suggest strategies for an organizer of pavilions to operate more effectively so as to increase exhibitors’ positive outcomes. We constructed a research model and presented some hypotheses. To assess these hypotheses, questionnaires were distributed to exhibitors who had participated in a Korean pavilion at an international trade exhibition. SPSS 16.0 software was used to analyze the data. First, the factors that determined the quality of a pavilion were analyzed to assess their effect on participant outcome. The only two factors that were found to influence the quality of a pavilion were the conditions of an exhibitor's booth and the support activities by the organizers. These had positive effects on participating exhibitors’ outcomes and anticipated future behaviors. To increase the positive outcomes of exhibitors, various changes should be made to improve the conditions of exhibitors’ booths. The pavilion organizer should also develop other ways to increase the positive outcomes of exhibitors such as local advertising and promotional activities, on-site support activities, invitations to buyers’ luncheons, promotional catalogs for exhibitors, and activities to attract potential buyers

    Influence of Job-seeking Stress on Perimenstrual Symptoms of Female College Students in Health and Non-health related Majors: Mediating Effects of Stress Coping Styles

    PURPOSE: To determine effects of job-seeking stress on perimenstrual symptoms of female college students with health and non-health related majors and mediating effects of stress coping styles. METHODS: Data were collected from 189 female college students who were juniors or seniors. This study was conducted using questionnaires on job-seeking stress, perimenstrual symptoms, and stress coping styles. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS, version 23.0. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test. RESULTS: Job-seeking stress was significantly and positively correlated with perimenstrual symptoms in non-health college students. Passive stress coping styles demonstrated a complete mediating effect on the relationship between job-seeking stress and perimenstrual symptoms of those with non-health related majors (β=0.31, p=.002). Such effect was significant (Sobel test; Z=2.06, p=.039). CONCLUSION: Effects of job-seeking stress on perimenstrual symptoms were mediated by passive stress coping styles of non-health related major students. Based on findings of this study, effective stress cope strategies should be developed considering characteristics of majors to manage perimenstrual symptoms of female college students with high job-seeking stress

    Visfatin exerts angiogenic effects on human umbilical vein endothelial cells through the mTOR signaling pathway

    AbstractThe biologically active factors known as adipocytokines are secreted primarily by adipose tissues and can act as modulators of angiogenesis. Visfatin, an adipocytokine that has recently been reported to have angiogenic properties, is upregulated in diabetes, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. Because maintenance of an angiogenic balance is critically important in the management of these diseases, understanding the molecular mechanism by which visfatin promotes angiogenesis is very important. In this report, we describe our findings demonstrating that visfatin stimulates the mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, which plays important roles in angiogenesis. Visfatin induced the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1ι (HIF1ι) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in human endothelial cells. Inhibition of the mTOR pathway by rapamycin eliminated the angiogenic and proliferative effects of visfatin. The visfatin-induced increase in VEGF expression was also eliminated by RNA interference-mediated knockdown of the 70-kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K), a downstream target of mTOR. Visfatin inactivated glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) by phosphorylating it at Ser-9, leading to the nuclear translocation of β-catenin. Both rapamycin co-treatment and p70S6K knockdown inhibited visfatin-induced GSK3β phosphorylation at Ser-9 and nuclear translocation of β-catenin. Taken together, these results indicate that mTOR signaling is involved in visfatin-induced angiogenesis, and that this signaling leads to visfatin-induced VEGF expression and nuclear translocation of β-catenin

    Integrative metabolomics of plasma and PBMCs identifies distinctive metabolic signatures in Behçets disease

    Background Behçets disease (BD) is a systemic inflammatory disease that involves various organs. The clinical manifestation-based diagnosis of BD is a time-consuming process, which makes it difficult to distinguish from patients with similar symptoms. Moreover, an authentic biomarker has not been developed for accurate diagnosis yet. Our current study investigated the unique metabolic signatures of BD and explored biomarkers for precise diagnosis based on an untargeted metabolomic approach. Methods Integrative metabolomic and lipidomic profiling was performed on plasma samples of BD patients (n = 40), healthy controls (HCs, n = 18), and disease controls (DCs, n = 17) using GC-TOF MS and LC-Orbitrap MS. Additionally, the lipid profiles of 66 peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were analyzed from 29 BD patients, 18 HCs, and 19 DCs. Results Plasma metabolic dysfunction in BD was determined in carbohydrate, hydroxy fatty acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolisms. A plasma biomarker panel with 13 compounds was constructed, which simultaneously distinguished BD from HC and DC (AUCs ranged from 0.810 to 0.966). Dysregulated PBMC metabolome was signatured by a significant elevation in lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) and ether-linked lysophosphatidylethanolamines (EtherLPEs). Ten PBMC-derived lipid composites showed good discrimination power (AUCs ranged from 0.900 to 0.973). Correlation analysis revealed a potential association between disease activity and the metabolites of plasma and PBMC, including sphingosine-1 phosphate and EtherLPE 18:2. Conclusions We identified metabolic biomarkers from plasma PBMC, which selectively discriminated BD from healthy control and patients with similar symptoms (recurrent mouth ulcers with/without genital ulcers). The strong correlation was determined between the BD activity and the lipid molecules.     Management of the smaller twin with impending compromise in twin pregnancies complicated by selective fetal growth restriction: a questionnaire-based study of clinical practice patterns

    Background In twin pregnancies complicated by selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR), if the smaller twin is in the state of impending intra-uterine death (IUD), immediate delivery will reduce the risk of IUD of the smaller twin while exposing the larger twin to iatrogenic preterm birth (PTB). Therefore, the management options would either be to maintain pregnancy for the maturation of the larger twin despite the risk of IUD of the smaller twin or immediate delivery to prevent IUD of the smaller twin. However, the optimal gestational age of management transition from maintaining pregnancy to immediate delivery has not been established. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicians perspective on the optimal timing of immediate delivery in twin pregnancies complicated by sFGR. Methods An online cross-sectional survey was performed with obstetricians and gynecologists (OBGYN) in South Korea. The questionnaire asked the following: (1) whether participants would maintain or immediately deliver a twin pregnancy complicated by sFGR with signs of impending IUD of the smaller twin; (2) the optimal gestational age of management transition from maintaining pregnancy to immediate delivery in a twin pregnancy with impending IUD of the smaller twin; and (3) the limit of viability and intact survival in general preterm neonates. Results A total of 156 OBGYN answered the questionnaires. In a clinical scenario of dichorionic (DC) twin pregnancy complicated by sFGR with signs of impending IUD of the smaller twin, 57.1% of the participants answered that they would immediately deliver the twin pregnancy. However, 90.4% answered that they would immediately deliver the pregnancy in the same scenario for monochorionic (MC) twin pregnancy. The participants designated 30 weeks for DC twin and 28 weeks for MC twin pregnancies as the optimal gestational age of management transition from maintaining pregnancy to immediate delivery. The participants regarded 24 weeks as the limit of viability and 30 weeks as the limit of intact survival in general preterm neonates. The optimal gestational age of management transition for DC twin pregnancy was correlated with the limit of intact survival in general preterm neonates (p < 0.001), but not with the limit of viability. However, the optimal gestational age of management transition for MC twin pregnancy was associated with both the limit of intact survival (p = 0.012) and viability with marginal significance (p = 0.062). Conclusions Participants preferred to immediately deliver twin pregnancies complicated by sFGR with impending IUD of the smaller twin at the limit of intact survival (30 weeks) for DC twin pregnancies and at the midway between the limit of intact survival and viability (28 weeks) for MC twin pregnancies. More research is needed to establish guidelines regarding the optimal delivery timing for twin pregnancies complicated by sFGR

    Air-stable n-type operation of Gd-contacted carbon nanotube field effect transistors

    We report air-stable n -type operations of the single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors (SWNT-FETs) fabricated with Gd electrodes. Unlike previously reported n -type SWNT-FETs, our devices maintained their n -type operation characteristics in ambient atmosphere for more than two months. The shallow Gd films with a thickness below 20 nm are corroded by environmental oxygen, whereas the well-contacted Gd-SWNT interfaces underneath the thick Gd layers are protected from contaminations by air molecules. Theoretical studies based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations confirm that Gd layers have an excellent binding affinity to the SWNTs.open8

    Inactivated vaccine with glycyrrhizic acid adjuvant elicits potent innate and adaptive immune responses against foot-and-mouth disease

    BackgroundFoot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious viral disease that is fatal to young animals and is a major threat to the agricultural economy by reducing production and limiting the movement of livestock. The currently commercially-available FMD vaccine is prepared using an inactivated viral antigen in an oil emulsion, with aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)3] as an adjuvant. However, oil emulsion-based options possess limitations including slow increases in antibody titers (up to levels adequate for defense against viral infection) and risks of local reactions at the vaccination site. Further, Al(OH)3 only induces a T helper 2 (Th2) cell response. Therefore, novel adjuvants that can address these limitations are urgently needed. Glycyrrhizic acid (extracted from licorice roots) is a triterpenoid saponin and has great advantages in terms of price and availability.MethodsTo address the limitations of the currently used commercial FMD vaccine, we added glycyrrhizic acid as an adjuvant (immunostimulant) to the FMD bivalent (O PA2 + A YC) vaccine. We then evaluated its efficacy in promoting both innate and adaptive (cellular and humoral) immune reactions in vitro [using murine peritoneal exudate cells (PECs) and porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)] and in vivo (using mice and pigs).ResultsGlycyrrhizic acid has been revealed to induce an innate immune response and enhance early, mid-, and long-term immunity. The studied bivalent vaccine with glycyrrhizic acid increased the expression of immunoregulatory genes such as pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs), cytokines, transcription factors, and co-stimulatory molecules.ConclusionCollectively, glycyrrhizic acid could have utility as a novel vaccine adjuvant that can address the limitations of commercialized FMD vaccines by inducing potent innate and adaptive immune responses
