    In this issue of Blood, complimentary studies by J. Li et al1 and H. Li et al2 identify the transcription factor ZEB2 as a critical regulator of multilineage differentiation in both normal and malignant hematopoiesis. In particular, these studies show that ZEB2 is an inhibitor of normal granulocyte production, and in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), antagonizing ZEB2 function releases the granulocytic differentiation block, creating an antileukemic therapeutic effect

    Chart a Course for Holistic Admissions Transformation Using an Interprofessional Model

    Implementing comprehensive holistic admissions requires schools to evaluate, and perhaps think differently, about recruitment and marketing, admission and retention practices, as well as the extent to which these practices align with the institutional mission and goals. Developing and implementing holistic admissions is time, and resource intensive and requires tremendous leadership and faculty support. This course is designed to give physical therapy educators background rationale and a formal structure to operationalize comprehensive holistic admissions, from recruitment to workforce placement, including strategies for gaining higher administration support. The Dean, former Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Admissions Committee Chair of the College of Allied Health Professions (CAHP) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center will share their experience with developing, implementing and evaluating comprehensive holistic admissions for the entire college, consisting of 14 programs.     Talking Trash: Ethics, Sustainability, And Organizational Trust

    In 1960 Americans generated 88.1 million tons (2.68 lbs./person/day) of municipal solid waste (MSW), by 2012 municipal solid waste increased to 250.9 million tons (4.38 lbs./person/day). The good news is that of the total MSW 5.6 million tons was recycled in 1960 and by 2012 the amount surged to 86.6 million tons. This real-world case (to protect privacy, names have been changed) chronicles the development of a strategic supply chain decision within a heavily regulated industry that is characterized by hybrid public/private organizations. It illustrates the importance of contract compliance and quality control assessment. In addition, it is heavily imbedded within the sustainability conversation. Finally, integral elements of the case are ethics and organizational trust, which, regardless of contract obligations, is essential in reciprocal relationships and community/customer support

    A Holistic Approach to Quantum Ethics Education

    This paper first provides an overview of the growing subfield of quantum ethics, including a working definition; research to date into social, economic, and political implications of various quantum technologies; and directions for future research. Second, it introduces the Quantum Ethics Project (QEP), its activities to date, and its organizing philosophy. The third section reports on QEP's ongoing curriculum development work, i.e. creating one of the first full-length courses on Ethics and Social Impacts of Quantum Technology. We outline the pedagogical approach being taken in the course design, including key learning outcomes, topic areas, teaching methods, and rationale. This is followed by a brief discussion of current limitations and future areas of attention, such as drawbacks to teaching ethical reasoning and ideas for assessment and implementation.     Anchoring of a dye precursor on NiO(001) studied by non-contact atomic force microscopy

    The properties of metal oxides, such as charge transport mechanisms or optoelectronic characteristics, can be modified by functionalization with organic molecules. This kind of organic/inorganic surface is nowadays highly regarded, in particular, for the design of hybrid devices such as dye sensitized solar cells. However, a key parameter for optimized interfaces is not only the choice of the  compounds but also the properties of adsorption. Here, we investigated the deposition of an organic dye precursor molecule on a NiO(001) single crystal surface by means of non-contact atomic force microscopy at room temperature. Depending on the coverage, single molecules, groups of  adsorbates with random or recognizable shapes, or islands of closely packed molecules were identified. Single molecules and self assemblies are resolved with sub-molecular resolution showing that they are lying flat on the surface in a trans-conformation. Within the limits of our Kelvin probe microscopy setup a charge transfer from NiO to the molecular layer of 0.3 electrons per molecules was observed only in the areas, where the molecules are closed packed

    ‘Question Moments’: A Rolling Programme of Question Opportunities in Classroom Science

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.This naturalistic study integrates specific 'question moments' into lesson plans to increase pupils' classroom interactions. A range of teaching tools has explored students' ideas through opportunities to ask and write questions. Their oral and written outcomes provide data on individual and group misunderstandings. Changes to the schedule of lessons were introduced to discuss these questions and solve disparities. Flexible lesson planning over fourteen lessons across a four-week period of highschool chemistry accommodated students' contributions and increased student participation, promoted inquiring and individualised teaching, with each teaching strategy feeding forward into the next

    miR-196b target screen reveals mechanisms maintaining leukemia stemness with therapeutic potential.

    We have shown that antagomiR inhibition of miRNA miR-21 and miR-196b activity is sufficient to ablate MLL-AF9 leukemia stem cells (LSC) in vivo. Here, we used an shRNA screening approach to mimic miRNA activity on experimentally verified miR-196b targets to identify functionally important and therapeutically relevant pathways downstream of oncogenic miRNA in MLL-r AML. We found Cdkn1b (p27Kip1) is a direct miR-196b target whose repression enhanced an embryonic stem cell–like signature associated with decreased leukemia latency and increased numbers of leukemia stem cells in vivo. Conversely, elevation of p27Kip1 significantly reduced MLL-r leukemia self-renewal, promoted monocytic differentiation of leukemic blasts, and induced cell death. Antagonism of miR-196b activity or pharmacologic inhibition of the Cks1-Skp2–containing SCF E3-ubiquitin ligase complex increased p27Kip1 and inhibited human AML growth. This work illustrates that understanding oncogenic miRNA target pathways can identify actionable targets in leukemia
