Planetary Quotas and the Planetary Accounting Framework Comparing Human Activity to Global Environmental Limits
Human activity is putting us at risk of altering the planet from hospitable to hostile. The Planetary Quotas are scientific limits for human activity, based on global environmental limits. The Planetary Accounting Framework is a new way to manage the Earth System using the Quotas in a poly-scalar approach. The framework allows meaningful decisions to be made at any level, and in any sector regarding policy, planning, technology and innovation, business operations, legislation and behaviour

Program Evaluation of the Strong Start Curriculum as a Selected Intervention for Early Elementary Students
Consistent with the need for implementation research and prevention programming for students in schools, the current study evaluated the implementation and outcomes of Strong Start, a social-emotional learning program, as a supplemental intervention for students in kindergarten through second grade at risk for developing emotional and behavioral problems. This intervention took place during the first year of a county-wide restructuring of mental health supports and was part of a multi-tiered system of supports provided in schools. A mixed method program evaluation was conducted to examine four areas of interest. First, the contextual factors related to program adoption were examined; second, program implementation was evaluated; third, student outcomes were assessed; and finally, the social validity of the Strong Start curriculum was evaluated. Results indicate that some contextual factors were related to decisions to adopt and implement Strong Start, that implementation integrity varied but was adequate overall, and that the curriculum was viewed positively by multiple stakeholders. However, no significant differences were detected between treatment and comparison groups in this first year of program implementation. These results are discussed in reference to theoretical implementation models and used to elucidate the process and challenges encountered in the first year implementation of large-scale initiatives across multiple schools. Limitations of this study and directions for future research are discussed
Influences on high school adolescents' college and career aspirations and expectations
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston UniversityParental aspirations and expectations for adolescents have long been linked to academic achievement; however, the research does not distinguish between these two terms, which are significantly different, and the majority of studies in this area have been quantitative. The present study interviewed 30 high school juniors and seniors from working class and professional class backgrounds. The study focused on the extent to which and how adolescents report that their aspirations and expectations were influenced by their perceptions of their parents' and significant others' aspirations and expectations. Interviews were coded for the language of aspiration (e.g., "hope" and "want") and expectation (e.g., "ought" and "should"). Emergent themes from the interview analyses illustrated that adolescents perceived a spectrum of aspirations and expectations.
Findings indicate adolescents learn of parents' aspirations and expectations through a combination of conversations with parents, observation of parents' involvement in the adolescents' academic process, and actions parents took toward their own higher education. Daughters frequently mentioned their mothers, and sons mentioned their fathers, as powerful positive or negative role models. Significant others, specifically guidance counselors, were integral to helping working class students make their parents' aspiration that their adolescent attends college into the adolescents' own reality
Dissent Repression Nexus in the Middle East 2006
The University Archives has determined that this item is of continuing value to OSU's history. The Middle East is often said to be caught in a never-ending spiral of dissent and repression influencing almost all aspects of existence. This “dissent/repression nexus” is critical because the Middle East sits at the crossroads of three continents, contains vast reserves of natural resources, and its conflicts have spilled into other parts of the globe.University of KansasTrinity University (San Antonio, Tex.)University of MarylandResearch project for Fiscal Year 2005-0
