Effects of domain connection and disconnection on the yields of in-plane bimolecular reactions in membranes
It has recently been shown (Vaz, W.L.C., E.C.C. Melo, and T.E. ThomPson. 1989. Biophys. J. 56:869-875; 1990. Biophys. J. 58:273-275) that in lipid bilayer membranes in which ordered and disordered phases coexist, the ordered phase can form a two-dimensional reticular structure that subdivides the coexisting disordered phase into a disconnected domain structure. Here we consider theoretically the yields of bimolecular reactions between membrane-localized reactants, when both the reactants and products are confined to the disordered phase. It is shown that compartmentalization of reactants in disconnected domains can lead to significant reductions in reaction yields. The reduction in yield was calculated for classical bimolecular processes and for enzyme-catalyzed reactions. These ideas can be used to explain certain experimental observations.NIGMS NIH HHS [GM-23573, GM-14628]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Convective Motion in a Vibrated Granular Layer
Experimental results are presented for a vertically shaken granular layer. In
the range of accelerations explored, the layer develops a convective motion in
the form of one or more rolls. The velocity of the grains near the wall has
been measured. It grows linearly with the acceleration, then the growing rate
slows down. A rescaling with the amplitude of the wall velocity and the height
of the granular layer makes all data collapse in a single curve. This can
provide insights on the mechanism driving the motion.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Controlled Dynamics of Interfaces in a Vibrated Granular Layer
We present experimental study of a topological excitation, {\it interface},
in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. We show that these
interfaces, separating regions of granular material oscillation with opposite
phases, can be shifted and controlled by a very small amount of an additional
subharmonic signal, mixed with the harmonic driving signal. The speed and the
direction of interface motion depends sensitively on the phase and the
amplitude of the subharmonic driving.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, RevTe
Velocity correlations in granular materials
A system of inelastic hard disks in a thin pipe capped by hot walls is
studied with the aim of investigating velocity correlations between particles.
Two effects lead to such correlations: inelastic collisions help to build
localized correlations, while momentum conservation and diffusion produce long
ranged correlations. In the quasi-elastic limit, the velocity correlation is
weak, but it is still important since it is of the same order as the deviation
from uniformity. For system with stronger inelasticity, the pipe contains a
clump of particles in highly correlated motion. A theory with empirical
parameters is developed. This theory is composed of equations similar to the
usual hydrodynamic laws of conservation of particles, energy, and momentum.
Numerical results show that the theory describes the dynamics satisfactorily in
the quasi-elastic limit, however only qualitatively for stronger inelasticity.Comment: 12 pages (REVTeX), 15 figures (Postscript). submitted to Phys. Rev.
