Gravitational quasinormal modes for Anti-de Sitter black holes
Quasinormal mode spectra for gravitational perturbations of black holes in
four dimensional de Sitter and anti-de Sitter space are investigated. The
anti-de Sitter case is relevant to the ADS-CFT correspondence in superstring
theory. The ADS-CFT correspondence suggests a prefered set of boundary

Stability of degenerate Cauchy horizons in black hole spacetimes
In the multihorizon black hole spacetimes, it is possible that there are
degenerate Cauchy horizons with vanishing surface gravities. We investigate the
stability of the degenerate Cauchy horizon in black hole spacetimes. Despite
the asymptotic behavior of spacetimes (flat, anti-de Sitter, or de Sitter), we
find that the Cauchy horizon is stable against the classical perturbations, but

Convergent metabotropic signalling pathways inhibit SK channels to promote synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus
Hebbian synaptic plasticity at hippocampal Schaffer collateral synapses is tightly regulated by postsynaptic SK channels that restrict NMDA receptor activity. SK channels are themselves modulated by G-protein-coupled signalling pathways, but it is not clear under what conditions these are activated to enable synaptic plasticity. Here, we show that muscarinic M1 receptor (M1R) and type 1 metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR1) signalling pathways, which are known to inhibit SK channels and thereby disinhibit NMDA receptors, converge to facilitate spine calcium transients during the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) at hippocampal Schaffer collateral synapses onto CA1 pyramidal neurons of male rats. Furthermore, mGluR1 activation is required for LTP induced by reactivated place cell firing patterns that occur in sharp wave ripple events during rest or sleep. In contrast, M1R activation is required for LTP induced by place cell firing patterns during exploration. Thus, we describe a common mechanism that enables synaptic plasticity during both encoding and consolidation of memories within hippocampal circuits
Geographically touring the eastern bloc: British geography, travel cultures and the Cold War
This paper considers the role of travel in the generation of geographical knowledge of the eastern bloc by British geographers. Based on oral history and surveys of published work, the paper examines the roles of three kinds of travel experience: individual private travels, tours via state tourist agencies, and tours by academic delegations. Examples are drawn from across the eastern bloc, including the USSR, Poland, Romania, East Germany and Albania. The relationship between travel and publication is addressed, notably within textbooks, and in the Geographical Magazine. The study argues for the extension of accounts of cultures of geographical travel, and seeks to supplement the existing historiography of Cold War geography
Quasi-normal modes of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes
The low-laying frequencies of characteristic quasi-normal modes (QNM) of
Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes have been calculated for fields of
different spin using the 6th-order WKB approximation and the approximation by
the P\"{o}shl-Teller potential. The well-known asymptotic formula for large
is generalized here on a case of the Schwarzchild-de Sitter black hole. In the
limit of the near extreme term the results given by both methods are
in a very good agreement, and in this limit fields of different spin decay with

Scalar Wave Falloff in Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Backgrounds
Conformally invariant scalar waves in black hole spacetimes which are
asymptotically anti-de Sitter are investigated. We consider both the
-dimensional black hole and -dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-de
Sitter spacetime as backgrounds. Analytical and numerical methods show that the
waves decay exponentially in the dimensional black hole background.
However the falloff pattern of the conformal scalar waves in the
Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter background is generally neither exponential nor an
inverse power rate, although the approximate falloff of the maximal peak is
weakly exponential. We discuss the implications of these results for mass

Radiative falloff in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime
We consider the time evolution of a scalar field propagating in
Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. At early times, the field behaves as if it
were in pure Schwarzschild spacetime; the structure of spacetime far from the
black hole has no influence on the evolution. In this early epoch, the field's
initial outburst is followed by quasi-normal oscillations, and then by an
inverse power-law decay. At intermediate times, the power-law behavior gives
way to a faster, exponential decay. At late times, the field behaves as if it
were in pure de Sitter spacetime; the structure of spacetime near the black
hole no longer influences the evolution in a significant way. In this late
epoch, the field's behavior depends on the value of the curvature-coupling
constant xi. If xi is less than a critical value 3/16, the field decays
exponentially, with a decay constant that increases with increasing xi. If xi >
3/16, the field oscillates with a frequency that increases with increasing xi;
the amplitude of the field still decays exponentially, but the decay constant
