Foundations in Wisconsin: A Directory [27th ed. 2008]

The 2008 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 27th edition of the print directory and the 8th year of the online version (www.wifoundations.org). The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. However, additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation Web sites, annual reports, and newsletters. Wisconsin foundations have shown continued growth in key areas. The number of active grantmaking foundations has risen to an all-time high of 1,275, with 70 new foundations identified since last year’s publication. While the total grants remained stable at $475 million, the total assets increased by 16.5$7.2 billion.https://epublications.marquette.edu/lib_fiw/1002/thumbnail.jp

In the Face of Anti-LGBQ Behaviour: Saskatchewan High-school Students' Perceptions of School Climate and Consequential Impact

In Canada, there is a dearth of research on school climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) students. Using social networking, sixty students from high-schools in Saskatchewan participated in a climate survey. Results indicated that anti-LGBQ speech is widespread, as were other forms of harassment. The more victimization that was reported by students known, or perceived to be, LGBQ, the more deleterious were the consequences for their academic performance, social lives, participation in sports and extra-curricular activities, and overall enjoyment of school. Limitations associated with the study and directions for future research are detailed.

Supersymmetric Cycles in Exceptional Holonomy Manifolds and Calabi-Yau 4-Folds

We derive in the SCFT and low energy effective action frameworks the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetric cycles in exceptional holonomy manifolds and Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We show that the Cayley cycles in $Spin(7)$ holonomy eight-manifolds and the associative and coassociative cycles in $G_2$ holonomy seven-manifolds preserve half of the space-time supersymmetry. We find that while the holomorphic and special Lagrangian cycles in Calabi-Yau 4-folds preserve half of the space-time supersymmetry, the Cayley submanifolds are novel as they preserve only one quarter of it. We present some simple examples. Finally, we discuss the implications of these supersymmetric cycles on mirror symmetry in higher dimensions

Além do arco-íris: Atitudes dos consumidores brasileiros em relação a anúncios homoafetivos

Although there is societal pressure to accept diversity, negative attitudes towards minority groups such as gay men and lesbian women, especially in Brazil, remain widespread. The objective of this study was to examine whether gender, religiosity, and homonegative attitudes are associated with evaluations of homoaffective advertisements, brand, and purchase intentions. A survey with 456 university students from southern Brazil was carried out. The results demonstrate that women have more positive attitudes towards homoaffective advertisements, brands, and purchase intention. Religiosity also interferes with the attitude towards the ads and the attitude towards the brand. When analyzing religiosity and homonegativity by gender in attitudes towards the advertisement, brand, and purchase intention, it is observed that, for men, religion does not interfere in the attitude towards the brand and in the purchase intention. Limitations of the current study, and directions for future research are outlined. Embora exista uma pressão social para aceitar a diversidade, atitudes negativas em relação aos grupos minoritários tais como gays e lésbicas,  especialmente no Brasil, continuam acontecendo. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar se o gênero, religiosidade e atitudes homonegativas estão associadas com avaliações de anúncios homoafetivos, marca e intenção de compra. Uma pesquisa com 456 estudantes universitários do Sul do Brasil foi conduzida. Osresultados demonstraram que mulheres possuem mais atitudes positivas em relação ao anúncio homoafetivo, marca e intenção de compra. Religiosidadetambém interfere nas atitudes em relação ao anúncio e atitude em relação à marca. Quando analisamos religiosidade e homonegatividade por gêneronas atitudes em relação ao anúncio, marca e intenção de compra é observado que para o homem a religião não interfere na atitude em relação à marcae na intenção de compra. Limitações do estudo e indicação de pesquisas futuras são destacadas

The guanine-nucleotide exchange factor CalDAG GEFI fine-tunes functional properties of regulatory T cells

Using quantitative phosphopeptide sequencing of unstimulated versus stimulated primary murine Foxp3(+) regulatory and Foxp3(-) conventional T cells (Tregs and Tconv, respectively), we detected a novel and differentially regulated tyrosine phosphorylation site within the C1 domain of the guanine-nucleotide exchange factor CalDAG GEFI. We hypothesized that the Treg-specific and activation-dependent reduced phosphorylation at Y523 allows binding of CalDAG GEFI to diacylglycerol, thereby impacting the formation of a Treg-specific immunological synapse. However, diacylglycerol binding assays of phosphomutant C1 domains of CalDAG GEFI could not confirm this hypothesis. Moreover, CalDAG GEFI(-/-) mice displayed normal Treg numbers in thymus and secondary lymphoid organs, and CalDAG GEFI(-/-) Tregs showed unaltered in vitro suppressive capacity when compared to CalDAG GEFI(+/+) Tregs. Interestingly, when tested in vivo, CalDAG GEFI(-/-) Tregs displayed a slightly reduced suppressive ability in the transfer colitis model when compared to CalDAG GEFI(+/+) Tregs. Additionally, CRISPR-Cas9-generated CalDAG GEFI(-/-) Jurkat T cell clones showed reduced adhesion to ICAM-1 and fibronectin when compared to CalDAG GEFI-competent Jurkat T cells. Therefore, we speculate that deficiency in CalDAG GEFI impairs adherence of Tregs to antigen-presenting cells, thereby impeding formation of a fully functional immunological synapse, which finally results in a reduced suppressive potential
