High frequency diffraction of an electromagnetic plane wave by an imperfectly conducting rectangular cylinder
Copyright @ 2011 IEEEWe shall consider the the problem of determining the scattered far wave field produced when a plane E-polarized wave is incident on an imperfectly conducting rectangular cylinder. By using the the uniform asymptotic solution for the problem of the diffraction of a plane wave by a right-angled impedance wedge, in conjunction with Keller's method, the a high frequency far field solution to the problem is given

Blueshifted galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We examine a sample of 65 galaxies in the Virgo cluster with negative radial
velocities relative to the Local Group. Some features of this sample are
pointed out. All of these objects are positioned compactly within a virial zone
of radius 6{\deg} in the cluster, but their centroid is displaced relative to
the dynamic center of the cluster, M87, by 1.1{\deg} to the northwest. The
dwarf galaxies in this sample are clumped on a scale of ~10' (50 kpc). The
observed asymmetry in the distribution of the blueshifted galaxies may be
caused by infall of a group of galaxies around M86 onto the main body of the
cluster. We offer another attempt to explain this phenomenon, assuming a mutual
tangential velocity of ~300 km/s between the Local Group and the Virgo cluster
owing to their being repelled from the local cosmological void.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Published in Astrophysics, Vol. 53, No.

The Entropy for General Extremal Black Holes
We use the Kerr/CFT correspondence to calculate the entropy for all known
extremal stationary and axisymmetric black holes. This is done with the help of
two ansatzs that are general enough to cover all such known solutions.
Considering only the contribution from the Einstein-Hilbert action to the
central charge(s), we find that the entropy obtained by using Cardy's formula
exactly matches with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.Comment: Minor corrections, section 5 refined, references added
The RN/CFT Correspondence Revisited
We reconsidered the quantum gravity description of the near horizon extremal
Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m black hole in the viewpoint of the AdS/CFT
correspondence. We found that, for pure electric case, the right moving central
charge of dual 1D CFT is which is different from the previous result of left moving sector obtained by warped AdS/CFT description. We
discussed the discrepancy in these two approaches and examined novel properties
of our result.Comment: revtex4, 16 pages, sign mistakes corrected, references include
Holographic Duals of Near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes
We consider the description of
Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m black holes by studying their uplifted counterparts in
five dimensions. Assuming a natural size of the extra dimension, the near
horizon geometries for the extremal limit are exactly . We compute the scattering amplitude of a scalar field, with a
mode near threshold of frequency and extra dimensional momentum, by a near
extremal uplifted black hole. The absorption cross section agrees with the two
point function of the CFT dual to the scalar field.Comment: reference added, improper statements corrected, 17 pages, no figure
Specific MRI Abnormalities Reveal Severe Perrault Syndrome due to CLPP Defects
In establishing a genetic diagnosis in heterogeneous neurological disease, clinical characterization and whole exome sequencing (WES) go hand-in-hand. Clinical data are essential, not only to guide WES variant selection and define the clinical severity of a genetic defect but also to identify other patients with defects in the same gene. In an infant patient with sensorineural hearing loss, psychomotor retardation, and epilepsy, WES resulted in identification of a novel homozygous CLPP frameshift mutation (c.21delA). Based on the gene defect and clinical symptoms, the diagnosis Perrault syndrome type 3 (PRLTS3) was established. The patient's brain-MRI revealed specific abnormalities of the subcortical and deep cerebral white matter and the middle blade of the corpus callosum, which was used to identify similar patients in the Amsterdam brain-MRI database, containing over 3000 unclassified leukoencephalopathy cases. In three unrelated patients with similar MRI abnormalities the CLPP gene was sequenced, and in two of them novel missense mutations were identified together with a large deletion that covered part of the CLPP gene on the other allele. The severe neurological and MRI abnormalities in these young patients were due to the drastic impact of the CLPP mutations, correlating with the variation in clinical manifestations among previously reported patients. Our data show that similarity in brain-MRI patterns can be used to identify novel PRLTS3 patients, especially during early disease stages, when only part of the disease manifestations are present. This seems especially applicable to the severely affected cases in which CLPP function is drastically affected and MRI abnormalities are pronounce
Anti-epileptic effect of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides by inhibition of intracellular calcium accumulation and stimulation of expression of CaMKII a in epileptic hippocampal neurons
Purpose: To investigate the mechanism of the anti-epileptic effect of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLP), the changes of intracellular calcium and CaMK II a expression in a model of epileptic neurons were investigated.
Method: Primary hippocampal neurons were divided into: 1) Control group, neurons were cultured with Neurobasal medium, for 3 hours; 2) Model group I: neurons were incubated with Mg2+ free medium for 3 hours; 3) Model group II: neurons were incubated with Mg2+ free medium for 3 hours then cultured with the normal medium for a further 3 hours; 4) GLP group I: neurons were incubated with Mg2+ free medium containing GLP (0.375 mg/ml) for 3 hours; 5) GLP group II: neurons were incubated with Mg2+ free medium for 3 hours then cultured with a normal culture medium containing GLP for a further 3 hours. The CaMK II a protein expression was assessed by Western-blot. Ca2+ turnover in neurons was assessed using Fluo-3/AM which was added into the replacement medium and Ca2+ turnover was observed under a laser scanning confocal microscope.
Results: The CaMK II a expression in the model groups was less than in the control groups, however, in the GLP groups, it was higher than that observed in the model group. Ca2+ fluorescence intensity in GLP group I was significantly lower than that in model group I after 30 seconds, while in GLP group II, it was reduced significantly compared to model group II after 5 minutes.
Conclusion: GLP may inhibit calcium overload and promote CaMK II a expression to protect epileptic neuron
