Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Syrian Refugees in Turkey

    Get PDF
Movements such as the Arab Spring (as described by popular media) and recent regional conflicts have forced people to leave their homes and flee to other countries or regions. Syrian refugees are currently the second largest refugee group worldwide, with half of them resettled in Turkey. Turkish government and non-governmental civil organizations have mobilized efforts to address the immediate survival needs of these refugees such as food, shelter and other provisions. Despite efforts to manage the complexity of mental health and social service needs of forcibly displaced people, counseling services are still lacking. This expository article addresses the mental health needs of Syrian refugees and provides implications for counseling professionals working with displaced people from a crisis intervention approach built on principles and perspectives of humanistic mental health. In addition, programs of support, such as the Mental Health Facilitator program, are discussed

Development of Perceived School Counselor Support Scale: Based on the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors

    Get PDF
This study presents a culturally and psychometrically sound instrument of perceived school counselor support among Turkish high school students. The study has been framed using American School Counseling Association’s Mindsets and Behaviors for Students Success Model to create a valuable instrument that measures students’ perceptions of their school counselors’ support in a different culture, society, and education system. The results of this study supported the theoretical based Perceived School Counselor Support Scale long and short forms providing initial and strong evidence based on internal structure and relations to other variables. Internal consistency estimates on subscales ranged from good to strong

Evaluation of the Short Grit Scale (GRIT-S) with Latinx College Students

    Get PDF
In the current study, the psychometric properties of a measure of psychological grit among 344 Latinx college students was investigated. Researchers used confirmatory factor analysis to validate a previously identified two-factor model of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S). Internal consistency was acceptable as measured by coefficient alpha. A two-factor model of Grit-S had a good model fit with the data. A discussion regarding the importance of these findings is provided and implications for counselors and researchers are offered

Factorial Validity of Teacher and School Counselor Support Scales in Latina/o Students

In the current study, we investigated the psychometric properties of two meaningful measures of support from teachers and school counselors among Latina/o students. Examining factorial stability with diverse populations is important to make sure that measures provide valid information about constructs of teacher or counselor support. While researchers have provided evidence of reliability (i.e., consistency), no study has examined validity (e.g., accuracy) of Teacher Support Scale Revised (TSSR) with Latina/o students. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses (CFA and EFA) methods were used to evaluate structural validity of the TSSR and School Counselor Support Scale (SCSS). Two different models of the TSSR were analyzed. Findings from multiple CFAs showed that five-factor 22-item of the TSSR had an acceptable model fit. A parallel analysis and EFA were run to determine the factorial structure of the SCSS. Findings indicated that the SCSS had three factors explaining 68% of the variance in the model. The results and implications for research and practice in Latina/o students were discussed

AN EXAMINATION OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE VOCATIONAL OUTCOME EXPECTATIONS SCALE WITH LATINA/O STUDENTS

In the current study, we investigated the psychometric properties of a meaningful measure of career development among Latina/o students. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate structural validity of the Vocational Outcome Expectations scale. The results supported a modest one-factor structure for the VOE scale. Internal consistency was good as measured by coefficient alpha. Findings provide support for the reliability and validity of the VOE with Latina/o students. A discussion regarding the usefulness of this measure of career development is provided

Determination of resilience factors in individuals who tested COVID-19 positive

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study was to determine the protective factors that can aid people in their recovery or help maintain their well-being in the face of collective adversity, in this case, the COVID-19 pandemic, and to examine how these factors can be further strengthened. The study included 89 participants from 14 different cities in Turkey, ranging in age from 18 to 70, 46 of them men and 43 women. In light of the findings of the study, it can be said that psychosocial support and re-adaptation programmes are needed to ease the social-emotional burden of living through a pandemic on individuals (especially those who survived the virus) even after the COVID-19 pandemic ends

A preliminary development and validation of the Translingual Disposition Questionnaire with Latinx students

    No full text
Current scholarship on translingual pedagogies focus on writer’s translingual strategies and practices. While scholarship explores translingual assessment practices, there is limited quantitative research on how we can measure students’ translingual dispositions. This article examines factor structure of a Translingual Disposition Questionnaire to measure students’ metalinguistic awareness as it relates to translingual dispositions (N = 281). Using Parallel Analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis, three factors that measure translingual dispositions were retained. With the increase of linguistically diverse students in higher education, a translingual dispositions instrument can assist educators in designing linguistically inclusive assignments and assessments that respond to students’ translingual identities, realities, and practices. Additionally, the instrument can also be used to explore how translingual dispositions are linked to students’ sense of belonging in higher education, academic success, self-efficacy, acculturation, and rhetorical writing abilities. Implications for translingual practices and for future research on translingual dispositions are discussed

Includes bibliographical references. As a part of facilities management (FM), building maintenance activities occupy a significant role in reaching the goal of delivering an acceptable level of performance while minimizing costs and failures. For institutional organizations, an effective FM approach is required to ensure their buildings function properly. Historical work order data may potentially include a substantial value for assessing the condition of building systems by helping to identify common maintenance activities. This study conducts a preliminary analysis of historical work order data collected from six educational institutions in the State of Colorado and Connecticut in the United States between 2008 and 2018
