    Data on efficient removal of acid orange 7 by zeolitic imidazolate framework-8

    A water stable and hybrid nonporous adsorbent, cubic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), was synthesized for Acid orange 7 (AO7) removal from aqueous solutions in batch mode. Central composite design was utilized to explore the individual and interaction effects of pH, AO7 concentration, ZIF-8 dosage and contact time on dye adsorption. A second order polynomial equation (R2 = 0.9852, LOF = 0.1419) developed for prediction of the AO7 removal. Sorption model revealed that the adsorbent dosage and the dye concentration are major factors that controlled the AO7 removal efficiency. AO7 removal increased from 55 to 80% by increasing ZIF-8 dosage from 0.2 to 1 g/L. The dye removal, on the other hand, decreased from 84 to 70% with increasing AO7 concentration from 10 to 100 mg/L and increased from 60% to 80% by decreasing pH from 12 to 4. The dye removal followed the pseudo second order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 80.47 mg dye/g of ZIF-8 was obtained according to the Langmuir model. Keywords: Adsorption, Acid orange 7, Cubic ZIF-8, Central composite desig

    Combination of the effect of ginger and anti‐inflammatory diet on children with obesity with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A randomized clinical trial

    Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of liver disease in children. Following earlier reports on an increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity, NAFLD is now becoming increasingly common in children. Although no definitive cure exists, early management, early diagnosis, and treatment can reduce its complications. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the combination of ginger and an anti‐inflammatory diet (AID) in children with obesity on fatty liver management. This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 160 children with obesity aged 8–11 years, with a mean (SD) weight of 65.01 (9.67) kg, mean (SD) height of 139.87 (7.37) cm, and mean (SD) body mass index of 33.40 (5.59) kg/m2. The study duration was 12 weeks. Children were divided into four groups: ginger (G), AID, ginger plus an AID (GPA), and control. Ginger capsules comprised 1000 mg of ginger, whereas the AID comprised fruits and vegetables, fish, turkey, and chicken (without skin) with lean meat, omega‐3 sources, nuts, legumes, probiotic products, and elimination of inflammatory food. Following the intervention, serum fasting blood sugar and high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein levels were significantly decreased in the AID (p = .006 and .002, respectively), G (p = .04 and <.001, respectively), and GPA (p <.001 in both cases, respectively) groups. Further, in the G and GPA groups, there was a significant decrease in body mass index (p = .04 in both cases, respectively), waist circumference (p = .009 and .003, respectively), waist‐to‐height ratio (p = .02 and .005, respectively), alanine aminotransferase (p = .004 and <.001, respectively), total cholesterol (p = .0002 and .0001, respectively) and low‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol (p < .001 and <.001, respectively). Eventually, serum aspartate aminotransferase was decreased (p < .001) and high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol (p = .03) was increased significantly in the GPA group. As a main finding of this study, hepatic steatosis significantly decreased in the G and GPA groups. Ginger supplementation can effectively improve NAFLD in children, and its effectiveness was further increased when combined with an AID

    Data on cadmium removal from synthetic aqueous solution using garbage ash

    This data article investigates cadmium removal efficiency using garbage ash as a cheap and effective adsorbent. Influence of different parameters, such as initial cadmium (II) concentration (mg/L), contact time (min), adsorbent dose (gr/L), pH and temperature (°C) were investigated. The characterization data of the garbage ash was determined using SEM analysis. The experimental data indicated that the adsorption of cadmium on garbage ash follows pseudo second order model and Langmuir isotherm model with R2 = 0.99. Also, the maximum adsorption capacity of adsorbent was 100.25 mg/g. Thermodynamic data showed that cadmium adsorption on garbage ash was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Based on acquired data, garbage ash could be proposed as an efficient and low-cost adsorbent for the removal of cadmium from aqueous solution.     Phenol removal from aqueous solution using Citrullus colocynthis waste ash

    Phenol is a hazardous organic chemical that introduced into the environment by industrial and pharmaceutical discharges. As a versatile option for phenol removal, adsorption would be viable if it accompanying with low cost adsorbents. This article described a natural, very cheap and local available adsorbent for phenol removal. Phenol showed a high affinity to Citrullus colocynthis waste ash which mainly composed of SiO2 (41.6%), Al2O3 (17.3%) and MgO (15.9%). Up to 70% of phenol adsorbed in the first 30 min of agitation. The phenol removal was increased by increasing adsorbent dose (0.5–10 g/L) and decreasing pH (2–12) and pollutant concentration (10–100 mg/L). The positive value of ∆H° in thermodynamic data (0.06) revealed that the process is endothermic. The high and positive value of ∆S° (13.01) and negative values of ∆G° (− 5.36 to − 7.28), showed a high affinity of phenol to the adsorbent and the spontaneous nature of the adsorption. Isotherm modelling revealed that the phenol molecules adsorbed in multilayer with the maximum adsorption capacity of 173.2 mg/g.     Evaluation of epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological features of definite infective endocarditis

    Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a microbial infection of heart valves and its endothelial lining which is considered as a life-threatening disorder. This study evaluated the epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological features of IE at the Cardiovascular Research Center in Yazd, Iran. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted on 20 patients diagnosed with definite IE on the basis of Duke’s criteria hospitalized for one year in the Cardiovascular Research Center in Yazd, Iran, from January 2015 to December 2015. Demographic information, clinical, laboratory, and microbiological findings, and also trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE) of each patient were recorded and assessed. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 16. Results: The mean age of the patients under study was 45±16 years with most of the afflicted patients (60%) being male. Most cases (70%) of IE were observed in the warm seasons (spring and summer). The most common clinical sign (80%) was fever. TEE was positive for all (100%) patients, and vegetation was seen in all patients. The nosocomial mortality rate was zero. However, 14 (70%) patients underwent surgical treatment. The valves afflicted with IE were: the mitral valve (40%), the aortic valve (35%), and the tricuspid valve (25%), respectively. 4 patients (20%) had a positive history of IE. Blood culture test was positive only in 1 case and the isolated microorganism belonged to the viridans group streptococci. Conclusion: Despite the one-year high prevalence of IE in this study, the nosocomial mortality rate was not high and was reported to be nil under surgical and antimicrobial therapy
