    In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper. With every advance in technology comes impact on everyday life. This holds true especially for advances in media technology. While the media is a pervasive aspect of life on a day to day basis, a time when it really becomes important is in regards to government and political information. The Internet has become an increasingly important tool for American citizens to not only gain political knowledge, but to engage in the political process itself. Some scholars suggest that this may revitalize democratic society, enabling citizens to command the political and economic resources needed to become effectively self-governing (Winner, 2003, p. 167). While it is not the goal of this research to determine if the Internet will eventually lead to a town hall format or direct democracy form of government, it is an interesting idea to suggest. Rather, the focus will be placed on whether or not the Internet, through social networking sites such as Facebook or Myspace are facilitating an increased engagement of citizens in the political process

    Migrant Health Education at Broetje Orchards

    Although it is recognized that there is a gap in health education in migrant and other under-served populations, very few programs have been established to address this problem. This research is important because it highlights areas in which health education is lacking and provides suggestions on how to address these issues. The purpose of the research was to assess the health education program present in the migrant community living in the Vista Hermosa community at the Broetje Orchards in Prescott, Washington, and to compare it to other migrant and agricultural communities. The Vista Hermosa Community is a unique case study because the Broetje family established this community for their migrant workers in 1988. Along with supplying housing, the family also provides a schooling system, daycare, and a health education program for their employees. The public health committee was established in hopes of increasing the availability of health education materials available to the community. The public health committee and members of the Broetje family were interviewed to assess the current health education available in the Vista Hermosa Community. More than half of the community has attended either one or both of the previous health fairs offered by the public health committee, thus it is important to consider the content and scope of education materials provided for participants

    Comparison of Private and Public Lab Fertilizer Recommendation Impacts on Field Crop Production and Soil Test Results

    There are many sources that farmers utilize to determine fertilizer needs for crops such as private and public labs, crop advisors, and fertilizer dealers. In many cases, these sources provide recommendations for a specific crop that can vary greatly, which can lead to large differences in cost. An experiment was established in 2021 with 12 sites across the state of Utah in alfalfa, small grains, and corn to test and compare fertilizer recommendations from five labs. The recommendations tested were from two public labs (Utah State University and the University of Idaho) and three commercial labs located in the Western United States. A composite soil sample was sent to multiple labs for analysis and the corresponding macronutrient and micronutrient rates recommended by each lab were applied at each site. Yield and forage quality data were collected from sites from 2021-2023 to evaluate treatment impacts. Fertilizer treatments had little to no impact at silage corn or alfalfa sites, but differences in yield and forage quality were observed at small grain forage sites. High variability in reported soil test results for the same composite soil samples was observed from three commercial soil testing labs. Differences in soil test results are sometimes due to the accuracy of each lab\u27s analyses, but they are also influenced by different chemical procedures being used to determine nutrient levels. Fertilizer recommendations from the five laboratories varied greatly, both for types of nutrients and rates being recommended. This is likely due to a combination of differences in soil test values (minor influence) and the fertilizer recommendation philosophies (major influence) utilized by each lab. When the recommendations were applied in field trials, higher application rates often resulted in increases in soil nutrient concentrations, but the ratio of the application rate to changes in nutrient levels varied greatly among sites and treatments. Applying higher rates to increase soil nutrient levels doesn\u27t work for all nutrients and situations and is often not economical. The results of this study demonstrate that growers should use caution when selecting fertilizer recommendations and that there is opportunity for greater public-private coordination of fertilizer recommendations

    Analysis of Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis (SOS) Fusion in a Contemporary Southern Nevada Subadult Hispanic Population Using Archival Cone-Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) Images

    This study employs the three-dimensional visualization capability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to investigate the relationship between chronological age and timing of fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis in a male/female subadult Hispanic population of Southern Nevada. The sample includes cross-sectional data of 374 orthodontic patients (166 males and 208 females) aged 8-20 years. The SOS is scored by a four-stage scoring system as completely open (stage 0), less than half fused (stage 1), more than half fused (stage 2), or completely fused (stage 3) as visualized in the midsagittal plane in the CBCT image. The relationship between SOS fusion stage and chronological age for both males and females is investigated for utility in age estimation efforts of living persons. Mean ages for fusion stage 0, stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3 were 10.90, 12.66, 13.87, and 16.35 years in males, and 9.86, 10.54, 11.42, and 14.84 in females, respectively. Spearman correlation analysis showed a significantly strong positive correlation between age and SOS fusion stage for the entire population (Spearman’s rho = 0.719, p There is a significant positive relationship between SOS fusion and chronological age in subadult Hispanic males and females of Southern Nevada. Results from this research suggest that SOS fusion stage could be used as a subadult age estimation technique for Hispanic males of Southern Nevada, but not for females. Ultimately, SOS fusion stage should be used in conjunction with other skeletal or dental indices for age estimation efforts in this population and not as a stand-alone age indicator

    America is a country founded on revolution. In fact, our founding fathers valued this right to dissent so highly, that they wrote it into our first amendment. In recent years, America has come to fear the very same kind of civil disobedience on which the country was founded. Now, citizens are expected to balance their dissent within the parameters of law, and this is exactly the view of past Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. He stands for civil disobedience that follows the processes outlined in the Constitution and expects that dissenters accept their punishments when they step out of the law’s bounds. Although some citizens do share this view, it is outdated and ineffective for the problems that are facing our country today. Political science professor and social activist Howard Zinn calls for civil disobedience based on morality and justice. Only civil disobedience, he claims, can awaken America to the despicable state of the country and make progress happen. Zinn’s argument for civil disobedience focuses on justice for citizens and progressing the nation forward, while Fortas’ idea of civil disobedience is confined by the rule of law and the symbolic agreement of obligation between a citizen and a state

    Emotional availability (EA) teleintervention for adoptive families

    2012 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.This study evaluated the new online Emotional Availability (EA) Intervention for use with adoptive families in enhancing parent-child EA, parental perceptions of EA, child attachment behaviors, parent-child emotional attachment, and reducing parent-reported child behavioral problems and parenting-related stress. Participants in this study were adoptive parents and their adopted children ages 1.5 - 5 years old (N = 15 dyads). Participants were placed in an immediate intervention group (IG) or a delayed intervention group (DG) that would receive the 6-week EA Intervention after the IG. Results revealed significant differences in the IG in child behavioral problems, parent-child EA, parental perceptions of EA, and parent-child emotional attachment, improvements not seen in the DG. Analysis of effects of the DG after receiving the EA Intervention revealed significant differences over time also in child behavioral problems, parent-child EA, parental perceptions of EA, and parent-child emotional attachment. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed

    Removing the Presumption of Innocence: A Constitutional Analysis of the Ogden Trece Gang Injunction

    Gang activity poses a substantial problem in many communities. The city of Ogden, Utah, is home to many gangs, and law enforcement is constantly looking for a way to decrease gang violence. In an attempt to reduce gang violence in Ogden, Judge Ernie Jones issued the Ogden Trece gang injunction on September 27, 2010, in Weber County, Utah. The injunction, based on several similar injunctions in California, affects hundreds of alleged Ogden Trece gang members and spans an area including virtually the entire city of Ogden. The injunction prohibits those enjoined from engaging in various illegal activities as well as many otherwise legal activities. This Note analyzes the unconstitutionality of the Ogden Trece gang injunction, specifically focusing on three main theories. First, the injunction removes the due process rights of those enjoined. Second, the injunction limits the rights to assemble and associate with family members. Finally, the injunction is overly vague and open to excessive interpretation

    Mixed sand–mud bedforms produced by transient turbulent flows in the fringe of submarine fans: Indicators of flow transformation

    The fringe of fine‐grained deep‐marine systems often exhibits complex sedimentary facies and facies associations, because the presence of clay promotes the development of transient turbulent flows with complex depositional properties. Relatively little is known about the variation of current‐induced sedimentary structures found within these facies. This study provides the first comprehensive description and interpretation of mixed sandstone–mudstone bedforms observed in the fringe of the mud‐rich submarine fan that makes up the Aberystwyth Grits Group and Borth Mudstone Formation (Wales, United Kingdom). Using textural and structural descriptions, 158 bedforms in sediment gravity flow deposits were characterized into three main types: ‘classic’ sandy current ripples, large current ripples and low‐amplitude bed‐waves. The sandy current ripples comprise clean sandstone, with average heights and lengths of 11 mm and 141 mm, respectively. The large current ripples are composed of mixed sandstone–mudstone and possess greater dimensions than the sandy current ripples, with an average height of 19 mm and an average length of 274 mm. The low‐amplitude bed‐waves are long thin bedforms composed commonly of mixed sandstone–mudstone, with an average height and length of 10 mm and 354 mm, respectively. The large current ripples and low‐amplitude bed‐waves are strikingly similar to experimental bedforms produced under decelerating mixed sand–mud flows and are interpreted to form beneath transitional flows with enhanced and attenuated near‐bed turbulence, respectively. From the fringe to the distal fringe of the fan, the dominant bedform type changed from sandy current ripples, via large current ripples, to low‐amplitude bed‐waves, suggesting that the flows changed from turbulent to increasingly turbulence‐modulated. It is proposed that the flow Reynolds number reduced, reflecting this flow transformation, from a combination of constant or decreasing flow height, flow deceleration from sediment deposition, and increasing flow viscosity due to the shear‐thinning nature of clay‐rich suspensions. Large current ripples and low‐amplitude bed‐waves are likely to be common in the fringe of other submarine fans. The presence and spatial trends in mixed sand–mud bedform types may be an important tool in interpreting fan fringe environments
