    Epidemiology and economic impact of Johne's disease in Irish dairy herds

    End of project reportThis project addressed two aspects of an emerging infectious disease of Irish cattle; the epidemiology and the economic impacts of Johne’s disease (paratuberculosis). Though this disease has been present in Irish cattle herds for decades, only since the introduction of the Single European Market in 1992 has it become more widespread. In addition to this change in the epidemiology of the disease in Irish cattle, there is increasing evidence that the causative organism, Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) may be implicated in a human illness, Crohn’s disease, though proof of a zoonotic link is currently disputed (Tremblay, 2004). Against this background a collaborative research project was set up by Teagasc and funded by Irish dairy farmers

    Increasing resilience to natural hazards through crowd-sourcing in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

    In this project we aim to demonstrate how volcanic environments exposed to multiple hazards tend to be characterised by a lack of relevant data available both in real time and over the longer term (e.g. months to years). This can be at least partially addressed by actively involving citizens, communities, scientists and other key stakeholders in the collection, analysis and sharing of observations, samples and measurements of changes in the environment. Such community monitoring and co-production of knowledge over time can also build trusting relationships and resilience (Stone et al. 2014). There are more than 100 institutions worldwide that monitor volcanoes and other natural hazards, contribute to early warning systems and are embedded in communities. They have a key role in building resilience alongside civil protection/emergency management agencies. In this report, we propose that such institutions are involved in big data initiatives and related research projects. In particular, we suggest that tools for crowd-sourcing may be of particular value. Citizen science, community monitoring and analysis of social media can build resilience by supporting: a) coordination and collaboration between scientists, authorities and citizens, b) decision-making by institutions and individuals, c) anticipation of natural hazards by monitoring institutions, authorities and citizens, d) capacity building of institutions and communities, and e) knowledge co-production. We propose a mobile phone app with a supporting website as an appropriate crowd-sourcing tool for St Vincent and the Grenadines. The monitoring institution is the key contact for users and leads on the required specifications based on local knowledge and experience. Remote support is provided from the UK on technical issues, research integration, data management, validation and evaluation. It is intended that the app facilitates building of long-term relationships between scientists, communities and authorities. Real-time contributions and analysis of social media support early warning, real-time awareness and real-time feedback enhancing the response of scientists and authorities. The app has potential to facilitate, for example, discussions on new or revised hazards maps, multiple hazard analysis and could contribute to real-time risk monitoring. Such an approach can be scaled up to facilitate regional use – and is transferable to other countries. Challenges of such an approach include data validation and quality assurance, redundancy in the system, motivating volunteers, managing expectations and ensuring safety. A combination of recruiting a core group of known and reliable users, training workshops, a code of conduct for users, identifying information influx thresholds beyond which external support might be needed, and continuing evaluation of both the data and the process will help to address these issues. The app is duplicated on the website in case mobile phone networks are down. Development of such approaches would fit well within research programmes on building resilience. Ideally such research should be interdisciplinary in acknowledgement of the diversity and complexity of topics that this embraces. There may be funding inequality between national monitoring institutions and international research institutions but these and other in-country institutions can help drive innovation and research if they are fully involved in problem-definition and research design. New innovations arising from increasing resolution (temporal and spatial) of EO products should lead to useful near-real time products from research and operational services. The app and website can ensure such diverse products from multiple sources are accessible to communities, scientists and authorities (as appropriate). Other innovations such as machine learning and data mining of time-series data collected by monitoring institutions may lead to new insights into physical processes which can support timely decision-making by scientists in particular (e.g. increasing alert levels)

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) entry occurs via a pH- and clathrin-dependent endocytic pathway and requires a number of cellular factors, including CD81, the tight-junction proteins claudin 1 (CLDN1) and occludin, and scavenger receptor class B member I (SR-BI). HCV tropism is restricted to the liver, where hepatocytes are tightly packed. Here, we demonstrate that SR-BI and CLDN1 expression is modulated in confluent human hepatoma cells, with both receptors being enriched at cell-cell junctions. Cellular contact increased HCV pseudoparticle (HCVpp) and HCV particle (HCVcc) infection and accelerated the internalization of cell-bound HCVcc, suggesting that the cell contact modulation of receptor levels may facilitate the assembly of receptor complexes required for virus internalization. CLDN1 overexpression in subconfluent cells was unable to recapitulate this effect, whereas increased SR-BI expression enhanced HCVpp entry and HCVcc internalization, demonstrating a rate-limiting role for SR-BI in HCV internalization

    Comparison of drag measurements of two axisymmetric scramjet models at Mach 6

    Axial forces on quasi-axisymmetric scramjet models designed for operation at Mach 6 and Mach 8 were measured in the T4 Stalker tube at The University of Queensland using a single component stress wave force balance. A Mach 6 nozzle was used. The nozzle supply enthalpy was varied from 3 to 9 MJ/kg and the nozzle supply pressure from 35 to 45 MPa. As the conditions varied, the Mach number varied from 5.7 to 6.7. For both test models, the drag coefficients decreased with increasing Mach number. However, significant differences between the models were not observed over a range of free stream Mach numbers. A theoretical procedure to calculate the drag coefficient was found to give good agreement with experiments when appropriate account was taken of flow spillage at the intake

    End of project reportImprovements in milking efficiency have a greater influence than any other aspect of the dairy farmers work on overall farm labour inputs (Whipp, 1992). In order to facilitate the examination of milking process labour inputs, the milking process may be divided into the following three components: herding pre and post milking (transfer of cows to and from the milking parlour); milking (milking tasks / work routines within the parlour); and washing (washing of milking machine and yard). Meanwhile, within milking specifically, the number of cows milked per operator per hour is the best measure of both the performance of the operator and the milking installation (Clough, 1978). This is affected by the following three factors: the milking times of the cows, the number and arrangement of the milking units, and the operator’s work routine (Whipp, 1992). The addition of extra milking units will only increase milking performance if the operator has idle time during milking (Hansen, 1999)

    Modelling the distribution and quality of sand and gravel resources in 3D: a case study in the Thames Basin, UK

    Three-dimensional (3D) models are often utilised to assess the presence of sand and gravel deposits. Expanding these models to provide a better indication of the suitability of the deposit as aggregate for use in construction would be advantageous. This, however, leads to statistical challenges. To be effective, models must be able to reflect the interdependencies between different criteria (e.g. depth to deposit, thickness of deposit, ratio of mineral to waste, proportion of ‘fines’) as well as the inherent uncertainty introduced because models are derived from a limited set of boreholes in a study region. Using legacy borehole data collected during a systematic survey of sand and gravel deposits in the UK, we have developed a 3D model for a 2400 km2 region close to Reading, southern England. In developing the model, we have reassessed the borehole grading data to reflect modern extraction criteria and explored the most suitable statistical modelling technique. The additive log-ratio transform and the linear model of coregionalization have been applied, techniques that have been previously used to map soil texture classes in two dimensions, to assess the quality of sand and gravel deposits in the area. The application of these statistical techniques leads to a model which can be used to generate thousands of plausible realisations of the deposit which fully reflect the extent of model uncertainty. The approach offers potential to improve regional-scale mineral planning by providing an enhanced understanding of sand and gravel deposits and the extent to which they meet current extraction criteria

    The Effect of Organisational Climate on Employees’ Creative Performance through Knowledge Sharing Behaviour

    Malaysia has achieved significant industrial growth over the years due to the enterprising intervention of multinational companies (MNCs). The organisational climate in terms of its collaborative nature and innovative efforts has led to the enhancement of creativity among MNCs. The extent of knowledge sharing behaviour within MNCs, particularly in the Malaysian context, has not been thoroughly researched. A huge primary survey involving 20 MNCs with 155 respondents from both manufacturing and service sectors was included in this study. The findings of the study reveal that knowledge donating and knowledge collecting highly and positively influence creative performance. Interestingly, knowledge collecting mediates the relationship between an innovative climate and creative performance while a collaborative climate was found to highly and positively influence MNCs’ creative performance through knowledge donating. Thus, knowledge sharing behaviour is pivotal for the success of MNCs in terms of generating new ideas, promoting best practices, continuously improving and reducing the redundancy cost of learning to facilitate organisational effectiveness
