    An initial evaluation of a biohygrothermal model for the purpose of assessing the risk mould growth in UK dwellings

    Moulds are organisms that may be found in both the indoor and outdoor environment. Moulds play an important rolebreaking down and digesting organic material, but, if they are significantly present in the indoor environment they mayaffect the health of the occupants. A relative humidity of 80% at wall surfaces is frequently stated as the decisivecriterion for mould growth and methods used to assess the risk of mould growth are often based on steady stateconditions. However, considering the dynamic conditions typically found in the indoor environment, a betterunderstanding of the conditions required for mould to grow would seem desirable. This paper presents initialexploratory work to evaluate and assess ‘WUFI-bio’ - ‘biohygrothermal’ software that predicts the likelihood of mould growth under transient conditions. Model predictions are compared with large monitored data set from 1,388 UKdwellings before and after insulation and new heating systems are installed (‘Warm Front’), the suitability of thissoftware as a tool to predict mould growth will ultimately be assessed.     Experimental Study of the Role of Atomic Interactions on Quantum Transport

    We report an experimental study of quantum transport for atoms confined in a periodic potential and compare between thermal and BEC initial conditions. We observe ballistic transport for all values of well depth and initial conditions, and the measured expansion velocity for thermal atoms is in excellent agreement with a single-particle model. For weak wells, the expansion of the BEC is also in excellent agreement with single-particle theory, using an effective temperature. We observe a crossover to a new regime for the BEC case as the well depth is increased, indicating the importance of interactions on quantum transport.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    The Transformation of Public TV Companies into Digital Services at the BBC and RTVE

    Some authors question the existence of public television companies in the new environment of digitalization, Internet proliferation, growing competition and audience segmentation. However, others believe they should act as a driving force in the process of convergence and even that the new media present an opportunity to redefine the public broadcasting service (PBS) remit. The current challenge for the public media companies is to deliver their content through the maximum number of devices, not only via television sets but also broadband and mobile devices. Over the years, the BBC has adapted to new market situations and has implemented solutions that have been adopted by other public and private broadcasters around the world. The objective of this article is to show how the BBC has taken up the leadership of transforming public TV companies into online services in order to maintain market share; and how it has influenced Spain’s public TV broadcaster, RTVE. The methodology is based on internal and external documents of both corporations, and the findings are complemented by interviews with online service managers at RTVE. We conclude that these public companies have adapted their activities to the new technologies and have developed interactive services to reinforce their public service mission

    The energy spectrum observed by the AGASA experiment and the spatial distribution of the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays

    Seven and a half years of continuous monitoring of giant air showers triggered by ultra high-energy cosmic rays have been recently summarized by the AGASA collaboration. The resulting energy spectrum indicates clearly that the cosmic ray spectrum extends well beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cut-off at 5×1019\sim 5 \times 10^{19} eV. Furthermore, despite the small number statistics involved, some structure in the spectrum may be emerging. Using numerical simulations, it is demonstrated in the present work that these features are consistent with a spatial distribution of sources that follows the distribution of luminous matter in the local Universe. Therefore, from this point of view, there is no need for a second high-energy component of cosmic rays dominating the spectrum beyond the GZK cut-off.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Astrophys. J.
