Negative Group Velocity
The group velocity for pulses in an optical medium can be negative at
frequencies between those of a pair of laser-pumped spectral lines. The gain
medium then can amplify the leading edge of a pulse resulting in a time advance
of the pulse when it exits the medium, as has been recently demonstrated in the
laboratory. This effect has been called superluminal, but, as a classical
analysis shows, it cannot result in signal propgation at speeds greater than
that of light in vacuum.Comment: v3 adds discussion of "rephasing", and adds a figure. v4 adds

The composition of corotating energetic particle streams
The relative abundances of 1.5 to 23 MeV/nucleon ions in corotating nucleon streams were compared with ion abundances in particle events associated with solar flares and with solar and solar wind abundances. He/O and C/O ratios were found to be a factor of the order two to three times greater in corotating streams than in flare associated events. The distribution of H/He ratios in corotating streams was found to be much narrower and of lower average value than in flare associated events. H/He in corotating energetic particle streams compared favorably both in lack of variability and numerical value to H/He in high speed solar wind plasma streams. This comparison suggested that the source population for the corotating energetic particles was the solar wind

The few studies that examine variability indices have not considered how they are related to a selection of psychological outcomes, so we recruited 160 participants (age M = 24.16, SD = 9.54) who completed the IPIP-HEXACO personality questionnaire and several outcome measures. Heterogenous within-subject differences in item ratings were found for every trait/facet measured, with measurement error that remained stable across the questionnaire. Within-subject standard deviations, calculated as measures of individual variation in specific item ratings within a trait/facet, were related to outcomes including life satisfaction and depression. This suggests these indices represent valid constructs of variability, and that researchers administering behavior statement trait questionnaires with outcome measures should also apply item-level variability indices.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
The effect of the intergalactic environment on the observability of Lya emitters during reionization
Observations of high-redshift Lya sources are a major tool for studying the high-redshift universe and are one of the most promising ways to constrain the later stages of reionization. The understanding and interpretation of the data is far from straightforward, however. We discuss the effect of the reionizing intergalactic medium (IGM) on the observability of Lya sources based on large simulations of early structure formation with radiative transfer. This takes into account self-consistently the reionization history, density, velocity and ionization structures and non-linear source clustering. We find that all fields are highly anisotropic and as a consequence there are very large variations in opacity among the different lines of sight. The velocity effects, from both infall and source peculiar velocity are most important for the luminous sources, affecting the line profile and depressing the bright end of the luminosity function. The line profiles are generally asymmetric and the line centres of the luminous sources are always absorbed due to the high density of the local IGM. For both luminous and average sources the damping wing effects are of similar magnitude and remain significant until fairly late, when the IGM is ionized between 30 and 70 per cent by mass
The Influence of Formulation, Buffering, pH and Divalent Cations on the Activity of Endothall on Hydrilla.
Endothall has been used as an aquatic herbicide for more
than 40 years and provides very effective weed control of
many weeds. Early research regarding the mechanism-of-action
of endothall contradicts the symptomology normally associated
with the product. Recent studies suggest endothall
is a respiratory toxin but the mechanism-of-action remains
unknown. To further elucidate the activity of endothall, several
endothall formulations were evaluated for their effects
on ion leakage, oxygen consumption and photosynthetic oxygen
evolution from hydrilla shoot tips. The influence of pH,
buffering and divalent cations was also evaluated. (PDF contains 6 pages.
A solution to the hierarchy problem from an almost decoupled hidden sector within a classically scale invariant theory
If scale invariance is a classical symmetry then both the Planck scale and
the weak scale should emerge as quantum effects. We show that this can be
realized in simple scale invariant theories with a hidden sector. The
weak/Planck scale hierarchy emerges in the (technically natural) limit where
the hidden sector decouples from the ordinary sector. The weak scale is
protected from quadratic divergences because of classical scale invariance, so
there is no hierarchy problem.Comment: 10 page
