    Technique for Evaluating the Erosive Properties of Ablative Internal Insulation Materials

    A technique for determining the average erosion rate versus Mach number of candidate internal insulation materials was developed for flight motor applications in 12 inch I.D. test firing hardware. The method involved the precision mounting of a mechanical measuring tool within a conical test cartridge fabricated from either a single insulation material or two non-identical materials each of which constituted one half of the test cartridge cone. Comparison of the internal radii measured at nine longitudinal locations and between eight to thirty two azimuths, depending on the regularity of the erosion pattern before and after test firing, permitted calculation of the average erosion rate and Mach number. Systematic criteria were established for identifying erosion anomalies such as the formation of localized ridges and for excluding such anomalies from the calculations. The method is discussed and results presented for several asbestos-free materials developed in-house for the internal motor case insulation in solid propellant rocket motors

    Design and Testing of Novel Anthrax Vaccines Utilizing a Tobacco Mosaic Virus Expression System

    Anthrax is a potentially fatal disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. Infection and disease occur after spores gain entry into the body, germinate into vegetative bacteria, and produce toxin. Bacillus anthracis spores have been engineered as bioweapons and have been used repeatedly in warfare and terrorism to inflict casualties in military and civilian populations. Currently, only one vaccine has been approved for prevention of anthrax in the United States. This vaccine is an undefined product that is difficult to produce, requires a long vaccination schedule, and is reactogenic. Efforts to make an improved anthrax vaccine are being pursued. With recent insights into the mechanisms by which viruses engage the immune system, novel vaccine antigens have been designed with the hope of achieving faster and longer lasting immune responses. These technologies, called virus nanoparticle and virus-like particle vaccines, have been successful in the development of experimental and commercial vaccines.     Eulerian spectral closures for isotropic turbulence using a time-ordered fluctuation-dissipation relation

    Procedures for time-ordering the covariance function, as given in a previous paper (K. Kiyani and W.D. McComb Phys. Rev. E 70, 066303 (2004)), are extended and used to show that the response function associated at second order with the Kraichnan-Wyld perturbation series can be determined by a local (in wavenumber) energy balance. These time-ordering procedures also allow the two-time formulation to be reduced to time-independent form by means of exponential approximations and it is verified that the response equation does not have an infra-red divergence at infinite Reynolds number. Lastly, single-time Markovianised closure equations (stated in the previous paper above) are derived and shown to be compatible with the Kolmogorov distribution without the need to introduce an ad hoc constant.Comment: 12 page

    Non-local modulation of the energy cascade in broad-band forced turbulence

    Classically, large-scale forced turbulence is characterized by a transfer of energy from large to small scales via nonlinear interactions. We have investigated the changes in this energy transfer process in broad-band forced turbulence where an additional perturbation of flow at smaller scales is introduced. The modulation of the energy dynamics via the introduction of forcing at smaller scales occurs not only in the forced region but also in a broad range of length-scales outside the forced bands due to non-local triad interactions. Broad-band forcing changes the energy distribution and energy transfer function in a characteristic manner leading to a significant modulation of the turbulence. We studied the changes in this transfer of energy when changing the strength and location of the small-scale forcing support. The energy content in the larger scales was observed to decrease, while the energy transport power for scales in between the large and small scale forcing regions was enhanced. This was investigated further in terms of the detailed transfer function between the triad contributions and observing the long-time statistics of the flow. The energy is transferred toward smaller scales not only by wavenumbers of similar size as in the case of large-scale forced turbulence, but by a much wider extent of scales that can be externally controlled.Comment: submitted to Phys.     In vitro germination of wheat pollen on raffinose medium

    Wheat pollen gave up to 81.7 % germination when cultured on a 0.7 % agar medium containing 100 mg 1−1 H3BO3, 300 mg 1−1 CaCl2.2H2O and 0.75 M raffinose. On this medium at 25°C, germination started within 5 min and tubes reached a mean maximum length of 200 μm after 1 h. Maltose supported 27.9% germination, while sucrose gave at most 6.8%. Pollen on media with fructose, galactose, dextrose or lactose failed to germinate

    Upper critical dimension of the KPZ equation

    Numerical results for the Directed Polymer model in 1+4 dimensions in various types of disorder are presented. The results are obtained for system size considerably larger than that considered previously. For the extreme strong disorder case (Min-Max system), associated with the Directed Percolation model, the expected value of the meandering exponent, zeta = 0.5 is clearly revealed, with very week finite size effects. For the week disorder case, associated with the KPZ equation, finite size effects are stronger, but the value of seta is clearly seen in the vicinity of 0.57. In systems with "strong disorder" it is expected that the system will cross over sharply from Min-Max behavior at short chains to weak disorder behavior at long chains. This is indeed what we find. These results indicate that 1+4 is not the Upper Critical Dimension (UCD) in the week disorder case, and thus 4+1 does not seem to be the upper critical dimension for the KPZ equation

    Elephants can determine ethnicity, gender, and age from acoustic cues in human voices

    Animals can accrue direct fitness benefits by accurately classifying predatory threat according to the species of predator and the magnitude of risk associated with an encounter. Human predators present a particularly interesting cognitive challenge, as it is typically the case that different human subgroups pose radically different levels of danger to animals living around them. Although a number of prey species have proved able to discriminate between certain human categories on the basis of visual and olfactory cues, vocalizations potentially provide a much richer source of information. We now use controlled playback experiments to investigate whether family groups of free-ranging African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya can use acoustic characteristics of speech to make functionally relevant distinctions between human subcategories differing not only in ethnicity but also in sex and age. Our results demonstrate that elephants can reliably discriminate between two different ethnic groups that differ in the level of threat they represent, significantly increasing their probability of defensive bunching and investigative smelling following playbacks of Maasai voices. Moreover, these responses were specific to the sex and age of Maasai presented, with the voices of Maasai women and boys, subcategories that would generally pose little threat, significantly less likely to produce these behavioral responses. Considering the long history and often pervasive predatory threat associated with humans across the globe, it is likely that abilities to precisely identify dangerous subcategories of humans on the basis of subtle voice characteristics could have been selected for in other cognitively advanced animal species

    Virtual and Face-to-Face Team Collaboration Comparison Through an Agent-Based Simulation

    The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the acceptance of virtual team collaboration as a replacement for face-to-face collaboration. Unlike face-to-face collaboration, virtual collaboration is influenced by unique factors, such as technology mediation. However, there is a lack of rigorous research that assesses the impact of virtual collaboration on the engineering design process. Therefore, the current study investigates the effect of virtual team collaboration on design outcomes by means of the model of influence, learning, and norms in organizations (MILANO) framework. To tailor MILANO for virtual collaboration, this paper first presents an empirical study of human design teams, which shows how model parameter values for face-to-face collaboration (like self-efficacy, perceived influencers, perceived degree of influence, trust and familiarity) differ from appropriate parameter values for face-to-face collaboration. The simulation results for both virtual and face-to-face collaboration show how design outcomes differ with collaboration mode. Unlike teams with a few well-defined influential individuals, the mode of collaboration does not have a significant impact on teams where all individuals are equally influential. Virtual collaboration also results in lower exploration and variety than face-to-face collaboration
