ART/WORK: Labor, Identity, and Society
Artists, perhaps to emphasize their own dedication to the intellectual and manual skills required for making art, have long been drawn to the theme of labor, both in their depictions of workers and scenes of making. In the late seventeenth century, Dutch paintings frequently portrayed earnest and diligent artisans performing trades at shops or on the streets. Later, rapid economic, social and political changes throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century led to a more radical approach to realist representations of labor. This exhibition ART/WORK: Labor, Identity, and Society considers these art-historical precedents to explore the issues of labor in art. More specifically, the student curators investigate the dynamic interplay between labor, gender, and race in the process of industrialization and social transition across various cultures in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. ART/WORK highlights thirteen works of art from Gettysburg College’s Fine Art Collection and Special Collections. Posters, prints, and photographs in this exhibition are not simply documents of people and tasks performed within their own particular histories and societies, but are presented as works of art by a diverse group of accomplished makers. Modern American populism: Analyzing the economics behind the Silent Majority, the Tea Party and Trumpism
This article researches populism, more specifically, Modern American Populism (MAP), constructed of white, rural, and economically oppressed reactionarianism, which was borne out of the political upheaval of the 1960’s Civil Rights movement. The research looks to explain the causes of populism and what leads voters to support populist movements and politicians. The research focuses on economic anxiety as the main cause but also examines an alternative theory of racial resentment. In an effort to answer the question, what causes
populist movements and motivations, I apply a research approach that utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods. There is an examination of literature that defines populism, its causes and a detailed discussion of the case studies, including the 1972 election of Richard Nixon; the Tea Party election of 2010; and the 2016 election of Donald Trump. In addition, statistical data analysis was run using American National Election Studies (ANES) surveys associated with each specific case study. These case studies were chosen because they most represent forms of populist movements in modern American history. While ample qualitative evidence suggested support for the hypothesis that economic anxiety is a necessary condition for populist voting patterns that elected Nixon, the Tea Party and Trump, the statistical data only supported the hypothesis in two cases, 2010 and 2016, with 1972 coming back inconclusive. The data also suggested that both economic anxiety and racial resentment played a role in 2010 and 2016, while having no significant effect in 1972 in either case. This suggests that further research needs to be conducted into additional populist case studies, as well as an examination into the role economic anxiety and economic crises play on racial resentment and racially motivated voting behavior

Using a genetic risk score to calculate the optimal age for an individual to undergo coronary artery calcium screening.
BackgroundGenetic risk scores (GRSs) have been associated with CHD events and coronary artery calcium (CAC). We sought to evaluate the ability of a GRS to improve CAC as a screening test.MethodsUsing the results of the most recent genome-wide association studies, we calculated a GRS in 6660 individuals from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and used it to determine the optimal age for an individual to undergo CAC screening.ResultsThis 157-SNP GRS was predictive of non-zero CAC in individuals aged 44-54 and improved the positive yield of CAC as a screening test in this age group. The GRS was predictive of CAC in the entire multi-ethnic cohort and in each self-identified ethnic group (European American, Chinese American, African American, and Hispanic American) assessed individually. Given a specified target yield rate of non-zero CAC, an equation was derived to calculate an individual's optimal age to undergo CAC screening. In addition, a "direct-to-consumer" GRS consisting of only risk SNPs or their proxies that are directly genotyped on the 23andMe v5 chip (102-SNP GRS) was assessed in the European American population and was predictive of non-zero CAC in younger individuals.ConclusionA GRS is associated with non-zero CAC in a multi-ethnic cohort and can be used to calculate the age of a person's first calcium scan, given a target threshold for CAC discovery. Furthermore, an inexpensive and widely available "direct-to-consumer" GRS was found to be a viable option to calculate the optimal age for CAC screening
